To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

Oh - you've been looking at the junk food.

Yes that looks weird in any shop :)

wukter · 25/01/2011 10:50

There were a loaf of bread wearing a trench coat and reading the Wall Street Journal last time I was there. When I passed the bread aisle it hissed 'I hear the weather is pleasant in Moscow at this time of year'. In a foreign accent.

Naturally I never went back.

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 10:50

No, I looked at ham and it said reformed meat, and then loads of words I did not even recognise.

wukter · 25/01/2011 10:51

e - numbers, transfats, read the labels of course! What do you do in waitrose???

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 10:51

And it is not that cheaper than Sainsbury or Tesco...

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 25/01/2011 10:51

The Germans are generally more critical of e-numbers, additives etc so no worries there. Aldi products regularly get good marks from the ökotest magazine - a kind of ecological Which? magazine.

And the fruit and veg keeps longer cause it is fresh, higher turnover than many other shops.

Jins · 25/01/2011 10:51

was it square ham?

clevercloggs · 25/01/2011 10:51

ive never been in an Aldi cos its not really conveniently near

should i make an effort?

I cant be doing with poor quality food and muvvers screeching at chardoney to shut the eff up!

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 10:52

most packet ham is reformed, not all of it is though, check out the italian deli produce, it's really good

manicbmc · 25/01/2011 10:52

Most cheap ham is reformed meat. And as a lot of the produce is European it is subject to the same labelling laws as any British food.

The tiramisu is gorgeous as well.

If you want to be guaranteed no trans fats then you'll have to take out a second mortgage and shop at M & S Grin

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 10:53

lots of ham in eery supermarket is "reformed", you'e probably just been buying a brand of junk that you recognise.

Lots of supermarkets (except M&S) hae hydrogenated/trans fats - just check the label if you are unsure..

Wukter I was thinking along sumilar lines but more of the Colonel Mustard in the library with the pipe kind of suspicious!

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 10:53

Manic, some items in M & S are sometimes cheaper than Tesco.

OP posts:
manicbmc · 25/01/2011 10:54

True - but if you did a normal weekly shop there you'd be bankrupt in weeks Grin

wukter · 25/01/2011 10:55

Aha Kew but Colonel Mustard lacks the critical 'forrin' element.

This is turning into a Nice Ham thread.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 25/01/2011 10:55

YABVVVVU. I love our Aldi and get a lot of shopping in it. Lidl too, both are miles cheaper than the supermarkets in my town.

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 10:55

Ilikemilk - you are the kind of shooper we in marketing just love. Brand loyal and imputes values to a brand you recognise.

Some brand loyalty is there because people have learnt that it eg tastes better, works better etc but mostly its because people are suspicious of anything they don;t recognise.

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 10:55

The main bonus is not only all the stuff I have already mentioned, it's the fact you can check out in a matter of minutes, no pissing around whilst 'swapping over so Jean can go on 'er break' they scan the stuff so quickly its amazing!
Also, if you are stood in the queue with an armful of items and the customer in front of you is unloading their trolley they ask you to come forward and pay so you don't have to wait.
It's the most efficient supermarket I have ever set foot in. In our Aldi there are usually 2 members of staff in the whole shop, sometimes 3.
I really should be on commission I LOVE ALDI!

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 10:56

Also Waitrose got now thousands of products that cost same as tesco. (I've seen advert on the door the other day). Honestly, tesco is so expensive these days, I am not surprised.

OP posts:
Jins · 25/01/2011 10:56

Normal weekly shop for me in Aldi is just over half the price of a normal weekly shop in Tesco.

(after I've subtracted the spend on things I never knew I needed from the Sunday and Thursday offers)

Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 10:57

you can find "some" items cheaper at virtually every supermarket.

I don;t do my whole shop at Aldi but do go about once a month to stock up on some things which are undoubtedly better and more reasonably priced than anywhere else. I have let yo find a parmesan that beats their very very reasonably priced one.

YeahBut · 25/01/2011 10:57

Did it have shifty eyes and a dirty mac?

MmeLindt · 25/01/2011 10:57

ProperCrimbo
Oh, you never saw the genius that was Aldi cashier before they had scanner tills. It was mesmerizing, they had all the prices memorised and could punch them through the till faster than you could pack your bags.

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 10:57

I always use the self-checkout thingy.

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 25/01/2011 10:58

I have "yet to" find!

foxytocin · 25/01/2011 10:58

OP is definitely a victim of the supermarket success in the UK.

you have taken a little blue pill. Maybe two! Exist through the door to the right and enjoy your life in the matrix.
