To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

YBVU, Aldi no different to any other supermarket such as Asda or Tesco, except for Marks or Waitrose Grin. You will find that they are the same quality as the major supermarkets in which you find crap produce as well. The meat is fine, I get the lean steak mince from Aldi sometimes and its great tastes just like Sainsboros. Give it a try. The fruit and veg tastes like erm fruit and veg, and is better than the major supermarkets imo, no different really, not from some alien planet.

You dont have to get all your shopping there, if you are fussy with your ham and stuff you could get them from the deli counter at the supermarkets and do the rest of your shop at Aldi, much cheaper.

The great thing about Aldi is that things are always in the same place at the same price IME. Meaning you can quickly nip in and out. No wandering around trying to find the orange juice and comparing prices per kilo to find out which "special offer" is a bigger rip off.

wildstrawberryplace · 25/01/2011 19:51

I thought the "brands" at Aldi weren't brands at all, they are all Aldi own brand stuff, but their market research told them that customers think own brand is cheapo and prefer branded goods. They won't be the same ones in Germany surely, all the labels are for printed for the British market and I bet some of the products are made only for the British market too (not all obviously).

They do have some branded stuff occasionally but the all the Disco biscuits, deli brands etc are just Aldi names. If you look on the small print it always says Aldi. Same for Lidl.

Same as M&S always to only have "St Michael" brand.

gaelicsheep · 25/01/2011 19:52

Incidentally Tesco's here does local milk at 79p for 4 pints. Been like that for months. No yellow ticket, it just sits there quietly. The more I look in Tesco the more I find great deals hiding there totally unadvertised. It makes me even more suspicious of their special offers.

BuzzLightBeer · 25/01/2011 20:13

Aldi does almost the same stuff everywhere, you won't find anything that is only found in Britain. M&S do branded stuff now too. Lidle does tonnes of branded stuff, its full of nestle coffee, heinz baked beans and the like.

wildstrawberryplace · 25/01/2011 20:22

Yep, I missed out the word "used" from my sentence about M&S, buzz.

Tesco sells own branded stuff in Northern Ireland that is specifically for that market, and you can't get it in the rest of the UK. For eg Tesco own brand Irish buttermilk, there are huges shelves full of it in the milk section in Norn Iron and you don't see it over here. Also M&S sell soup mix there which contains carrots, onions, swedes and Norn Iron celery herb which is only for the NI market.

I expect the OP has decided Aldi is yet another aspect of NotLondon life she dislikes.

I love Aldi. Their continental meats and cheeses are very reasonable and great quality. I love their jam and desserts as well.

BuzzLightBeer · 25/01/2011 20:32

WE get the NI buttermilk in the Republic too, strawberry. Wink

wildstrawberryplace · 25/01/2011 20:37

Yeahknow buzz.

seeker · 25/01/2011 20:39

Just you. Not suspicious, just foreign. I realize for some people that's the same thing.........

Lara2 · 25/01/2011 20:40

Aldi came out well in the recent Which? survey of supermarkets - definately not at the bottom. When I lived in Spain Aldi and Lidl were far more upmarket than they are here.

BuzzLightBeer · 25/01/2011 20:44

damn, now we'll be locked in a spiral of one-up-woman-ship until the end of time! Or the thread runs. Or I drink some more (Aldi) gin.

We moved recently and have an Aldi store 5 min walk away

LOVE it!! Get loads of stuff there, soooo much cheaper, rice, pasta, cereal, bottles of coke are 39p!!!

Some stuff we have tried isn't that nice, but only one or two things

I love the truffle chocolates, orange ones are my favourite

We also got a portable dvd player from there for £50

BendyBob · 25/01/2011 20:48

I love Aldi and Lidl. I like trying things that look different suspicious.

Lidl seem to have a curious obsession with all things gingerbread at Christmas but I guess that's a German tradition?

BuzzLightBeer · 25/01/2011 20:50

I bought a wireless door chime yesterday for ?6.99. Result.

icapturethecastle · 25/01/2011 20:51

The frozen king prawns are the one thing we haven't liked (well DH as I don't eat them) but I love Aldi especially their delicious chocolate and cheap dishwashing tablets!

BendyBob · 25/01/2011 20:52

I am wearing an Aldi thermal vest. Does that count? I'd rather have the champagne tbhGrin

Lara2 · 25/01/2011 20:55

BendyBob - oh yes, BIG in Germany at Christmas. Now we have Lidl, my cousins don't have to send the Christmas piggy parcels :)

gaelicsheep · 25/01/2011 20:56

Lara - my dad told me it came top in the Which survey. They are total Aldi evangelists. I used to think Aldi biscuits tasted stale , but then I realised that was my mum's biscuit tin!

sungirltan · 25/01/2011 20:57

i lived out of aldi when i was pregnant. it was next door to work he he

i'm still alive. so is dd.

Blatherskite · 25/01/2011 21:02

Right, going to go on Monday and do our shop at Aldi instead. What do I need to try?

purpleknittingmum · 25/01/2011 21:04

Oh yes, the biscuits are so much cheaper but just as good, just called different things obviously!!
