To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

Is it almost fashionable? I don't care a jot either way. I like having more money in my account to do nice things and go to nice places instead of giving it to places such as Sainsburys or Tesco!
However, I must say that their ski stuff that they've got on special offer atm is fantastic! I picked up another ski suit for dd today as her last one has lasted 2 seasons, a pair of gloves for me and a helmet. I LOVE the quirky wtf kind of stuff that they have on offer every now and again.
It's fab for plants, seeds and gardening stuff too as we like to grow quite a bit of veg and salad ourselves.
The sliced bread though is one thing I won't buy as I've found it goes off a bit too quickly, and milk as I like organic.
As people have said it must depend on the manager and the type of thing they get in, but ours is very good.

The dishwasher tablets are good, so are bin liners and bleach.

TheVisitor · 25/01/2011 15:45

Just to ask people - we use persil bio powder and am wondering how theirs compares?

CookingDiva · 25/01/2011 15:49

I buy as much as I can from Aldi as it is really good quality, british and cheap. The fruit and veg last longer than the supermarkets and the fresh meat is really good quality too. All the yoghurts I get for the kids and the mild and eggs too. As far as additives, e-numbers etc. they have no more than the bigger supermarkets. It's the same products in different packaging!

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 15:51

We have had the Barolo, absolutely delicious, also they have a very nice Valpollicella and I like you jaffacake am married to an italian so am biased but we also get an aussy one which is very nice

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 15:53

Started using the nappies and wipes the last few weeks too, pullups. They are also ver good and cheap!

sonsiexstitch · 25/01/2011 15:53

Personally I prefer Lidls but then we don't have an Aldis.

Tidey · 25/01/2011 15:53

I know someone who refuses to shop at Aldi or Lidl because they sell 'second hand food' Confused I assume that means brands you don't recognise...

I quite like it, good place for buying stuff like feta and olive oil that is quite expensive in other supermarkets.

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 15:54

I like Barolo and Valpollicella, would have noticed it in the shop, I am sure it is not sold in the Aldi I was visiting yesterday...

TheVisitor: Their wash powder is VERY good. I use it always on a 30'degree wash and everyhthing comes up beautiful.

I heart Aldi and I love it because ours is never crowded and apart from some dubious life advice from a tipsy old gentleman the shoppers are perfectly nice too.

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 15:54

Confused at tideys friend thinking aldi sell vomit!

ConnorTraceptive · 25/01/2011 15:55

All I'll say is that the packs of pull ups actually soemtime work out more expensive than say huggies if the big supermarkets have them on offer

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 15:56

Maybe it does vary then ILikeMilk, not sure, rest assured they do stock such things, I would ask next time, as they are very good

Angelmist · 25/01/2011 15:56

There is nothing wrong with Aldi products.

If you want to try something buy one. If you like it buy it again. I find their fruit and veg lasts longer on the shelf at home.

I don't buy pre-cooked dinners from anywhere. BTW, Lidl is also good value if you have one near you.

jaffacake79 · 25/01/2011 15:56

Propercrimbo, that's the one - the name slipped my mind. The Valpollicella is lovely. Oh and their Prosecco is good too. Although I'm sounding more and more likely an alkie Wink

propercrimbo · 25/01/2011 15:56

True Connor, asda baby event sucked me in this week!

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 15:57

That is a good point Connor. Most things I buy are on offer. I never pay full price for washing powder/dishwasher tablets/nappies/wipes, etc just stock up when they are on offer in Sainsbury.

The prosecco is very good, god I'm pregnant and have never wanted wine more than right now!!

mowbraygirl · 25/01/2011 15:58

I buy quite a lot of food in Aldi's the fruit and vegetables are very good value far superior to our local Waitrose. My SIL shops there and she is lucky if the fresh produce lasts 3 days after purchase.

My DH really likes the choc chip cookies and I like the apple ones. I can honestly say that there hasn't been anything that I have bought and said I would never get again.

jaffacake79 · 25/01/2011 15:58

Ah that's the merits of not being pg! The wine, the brie, the soft goats cheese, the sushi, the rare steak ........ Wink Sorry Grin

ILikeMilk · 25/01/2011 16:00

Jaffacake, you can have sushi if it is made from a previously frozen fish. Like Yo Sushi, etc.

LacksDaisies · 25/01/2011 16:10

It's just you. I was going to make some comment about lifestyle tourism and snobbery, but...meh, it's your loss.

free range chickens for £4.99 at ours!
their own brand hoops are nicer than cheerios and the crunch cereals are much loved by my children and a fraction of the price of similar products in one of the big four. The continental meats and cheeses are excellent value for money, and being a german store, there tends to be less additives in products in general (although heavily processed meats are heavily processed no matter where you buy them)
parmesan reggiano pounds cheaper than anywhere else, and as a protected product must meet the same criteria as that sold elsewhere.

and as an aside, my DH is in the food packaging industry, and there are only about four or five major meat packers in the UK, who pack for all of the supermarkets so there is literally no difference between a tesco chicken and an aldi one! One of the reasons we started shopping there was his insider knowledge.

jaffacake79 · 25/01/2011 16:10

Hahaha! Sorry. There are so many rules about what not to eat now though aren't there!

LacksDaisies · 25/01/2011 16:11

and aldi dishwasher tablets are good Housekeeping Institute approved. Leave less residue than finish ime!
