To think that food in Aldi looks suspicious

Yesterday I decided to visit Aldi after reading about it on mumsnet. Did not buy a thing. Everything looked a bit weird. Is it just me or this shop is not nice at all?

This is Aldi.

wildflowersinajug · 26/01/2011 11:39

39p for a generous punnet of juicy delicious cherries, blueberies, whole cucumbers for 29p and yummy avocados 29p too....Yes, very weird when the bigger supermarkets like Tescos get away with charging inferior stuff which costs 3x more.

OOh loved supporting Cornish farmers too when they supplied all the cauliflowers in the summer!

dustwhatdust · 26/01/2011 11:43

Well sorry OP, i think it is just snobishness.
As with a lot of food shopping you prefer certain shops for certain things .
Just because you don't recognise brands doesn't mean that it's inferior - If you haven't tried the stuff you can't really criticise can you ?
i shop in waitrose (mostly,it being due to 5 mins from house ) Asda , M and S, lidl and sainsburys - all depending on where i am at the time.
Aldi is not that convenient as it's too far, but my mother likes it .
Lidl sells delicious baby spinach and lambs lettuce at half the price of waitrose so buy this when i'm there. My husband is italian too and he's just 'discovered' it, he really rates lidl : ski gear and the beer particularly.
We buy wine through a club, but had some Lidl chablis and sancerre once and it was good and very well priced !

ILikeMilk · 26/01/2011 11:56

dustwhatdust, I never been to Lidl. I dont like Waitrose, only buy wine from there and occasional shopping if already popped in for wine. I mostly shop at Sainsbury's and Sometimes Tesco or M&S. So hardly a snob.

We have knocked 40% + off our monthky food spend by shopping at Aldi weekly. I also think we buy more veg as it is much cheaper. I go to Morrisons every 2 weeks and stock up on 'brands' that we can't manage without -Alpro for dd etc.

FellatioNelson · 26/01/2011 13:57

I know what you mean OP but I think it's just because we have become conditioned to recognising certain brands. I go into Aldi about once every 3-6 months for a browse and always come out with a trolley load. Grin Some things are indeed a tad suspicious and disappointing, but other things are bloody fantastic, and outstanding value for money compared to the usual brands in big supermarkets.

BooBooGlass · 26/01/2011 14:26

Damn you, whoever recommended the cookies. I had a trip to aldi planned this morning anyway, but threw in a couple of extra things. I may never have a waistline again, they are so good Grin
I also have a very tasty looking chicken and goats cheese pizza for me and dp later. I mainly go for fruit and veg, their sweet potatoes are half the price of everywhere else, and their apples and bananas are the perfect size for my dc, and last well. I hadn't realised how cheap the milk was until today either, so Tesco can bugger off now as far as I'm concerned

kermithermit · 26/01/2011 15:13

Not sure if YABU. I shop there but only buy certain things - bread, wine, biscuits/choc, cheeses, hams, tinned stuff. Sometimes milk and things like orange juice etc. You just have to know which products to get there.

Havent really done a proper shop there before - but am trying out Lidl today.

Its a bit far to do a weekly run but I thought I could stock up the cupboards/freezer each month and hopefully save some £££.

ItsGraceAgain · 26/01/2011 21:21

I bought exactly the same ingredients for my 'special' panini twice last month - once at Aldi; once at Waitrose. The Waitrose shop cost double the Aldi one, and the packets were slightly smaller. No difference in quality :)

I'm SO glad there's an Aldi near me!

itsalarf · 26/01/2011 21:50

I am amazed and a little bit Envy at all the Italian husbands loitering around! As for Aldi, it is fab. The curry sauces with the spices in the lid are excellent. Gnocci much nicer than the Asda one. Choc is excellent, especially the 45% cocoa one they sometimes have. They do a good pink cava too. One of the reasons you spend less is it's mainly just food, no books, DVD's, shoes etc.

Geistesabwesenheit · 26/01/2011 22:34

Aldi cheeses, fruit and veg are ok, the rest can be a bit grim sometimes. Our local Lidl (can you tell I live in a really upmarket area?) is good too. The only thing that pees me off about these places is that some products have forrin' words on them Shock

ilovesooty · 26/01/2011 23:24

Been to Aldi today. £41 for shopping which would probably have cost £70 in Sainsbury's. The chicken and asparagus soup is gorgeous, as are the yogurts that are obviously Muller Amore rip offs.

Strawbezza · 26/01/2011 23:49

29p for 100 cotton buds in Aldi. C'mon, do you really believe there is more than one factory in the world that makes cotton buds? What can a brand name give you, apart from an empty bank account?

And 69p for 250ml anti-dandruff shampoo which is just as good as Head & Shoulders (and from above, I reckon it's all made in the same factory anyway).

rockinhippy · 27/01/2011 09:05

got to disagree on comments above though :(...having now tried the Disco biscuits, they are really foulEnvy
DD like them thoughConfused

RudeEnglishLady · 27/01/2011 10:12

We buy Wine, Water, canned tomatos / pulses, pickles, lemon juice, tuna (storecupboard stuff) there in bulk and save quite a lot of money. Fruit and veg is also pretty good. Dishwasher tabs, toilet cleaner, handsoap - all good. Laundry stuff, shaving foam, toothpaste - really crap.
