I tok my 18 week and 18 month old into Weatherspoons this morning. The lift was out of order so I ended up leaving the baby in the buggy, unstrapping my son and taking him a level (4 steps) to the bar to order my coffee. I took my son because had I left him strapped in the buggy he would have started arching his back and becoming agitated. The buggy was only about 12 feet away from where I was standing at the bar. My boy was toddling about, within a few feet of me while I waited to be served. A lady bought a coffee and was walking past me to her table with it, I saw my son walk round a large pillar and could possibley walk into her path. I warned the lady and said "oooh ! careful" and pointed my son. She walked past him and said loudly "He shouldn't be walking about !"

So I followed her to her seat and asked her why my son should not walk about.

Her "Its not me that says it, its this place."

Me "But YOU said it, what do you expect me to do with him when I place my order ?"

Her "Can't you strap him in a buggy?"

Me "No I will not strap my child down for your convenience>"

Her "I didn't want to step on him"

Me "All you had to do was look where you were going, I warned you he was there."

and then it carried on for another 2 minutes.

So, was I BU ????

I'm gonna get slaughtered, but I am intrigued as to whether or not you think I was out of order.

YABVU and precious. You like to let your prince tippytoes roam around freely? Take him to a flaming playground. A pub/cafe/restaurant is no place for young kids to be roaming- unless of course you dont mind a long stay in the burns unit at your nearest childrens hospital of course.

hobbgoblin · 11/01/2011 21:02

YABU with attitude. The thing to say is "I'm sorry! DC in way" as a warning to people about to trip on your DC. You then yank them towards you. You got it all wrong here.

readinginsteadnow · 11/01/2011 21:05

I've read about half this thread, and my initial and subsequent reaction is the same.

Its a pub.
You had a little kid with you who you say 'wanted to stretch his legs' and not be in the buggy.
Go to a park then. Much more appropriate and fun for the child. It would also tire him out so if you did still want adult time, you could go in the pub with him asleep or at least pacified. If you cant wait that long for a coffee, take one with you to the park.

Sorry, but its the same irritating trend as all the mums who think Starbucks is a good place to entertain toddlers.

yabu

DaphneHeartsFred · 11/01/2011 21:10

You, OP, are an intimidating bully.

And quite possibly a genuine chav.

MargaretGraceBondfield · 11/01/2011 21:10

YABU.

CameronCook · 11/01/2011 21:10

I can't believe that you think what you did was right and that the other woman was in the wrong.

readinginsteadnow · 11/01/2011 21:12

If there was no mention of the baby, I'd say a clear cut case of pfb. Maybe the op is going through that phase of 'the world revolves around me' that you get when you have a tiny baby, and you cringe about in retrospect.

BringOnTheGoat · 11/01/2011 21:13

YABU to follow her. Maybe her comment was unnecessary but you acted oddly by following her for a row.

Gemsy83 · 11/01/2011 21:14

Why was her comment uneccesary? Its 100% true kids should not be allowed to wander freely in such places ffs

piratecat · 11/01/2011 21:15

can't believe you even posted this.

i think you knew you were in the wrong tbh.

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 21:16

I had coke

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 21:17

readinginsteadnow He is my second actually, I have three, so that blows your theory.

Gemsy83 · 11/01/2011 21:18

You said you went to the bar to order your coffee...
Sniff sniff what's that smell I wonder Hmm

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 21:20

I did wonder if people thought I was a chav today.

Ephiny · 11/01/2011 21:20

No you shouldn't have to 'strap him down' for someone else's convenience, but for his own safety in a place where people are carrying hot drinks you might want to keep him in the buggy or close to your side, don't you think?

It was unreasonable of you to follow her aggressively looking for an argument, and it seems a bit odd to me when people take toddlers and/or babies to a pub anyway, doesn't really seem like an appropriate or nice place for them.

DayShiftDoris · 11/01/2011 21:22

A little boy ran in front of my trolley in the supermarket... I barely stopped in time and if I hadn't I'd have smacked him one really hard. I let out a 'Woah' before I could stop myself. The mother said 'I am so sorry' and I said 'don't worry I have one like it too' whilst smiling and pointing at my son.

The father however came front behind me and said 'You want to watch where you are f&&&ing going! Stupid cow!'
(Yep it was him that was supposed to have control of the kid...)
I turned round and said 'If I hadn't have been watching where I was going YOU would be having a trip to A&E! Your kid YOUR responsibility'

YABU and you wouldnt have had a problem if you acted differently

crumpet · 11/01/2011 21:24

"I will not strap my child down for your convenience"

Fantastic! Did you really say that? Why do I never get to witness these barneys...

If my children were running loose in a resaturant(bar, coffee shop etc) I'd completely accept that any accident would be my fault.

curlymama · 11/01/2011 21:25

YABU. Especially when you went and argued with this woman. Very rude.

outnumbered2to1 · 11/01/2011 21:26

onEdge did you order Coke instead of coffee cos you realised a hot drink with your 18 month old toddling about wasn't a good idea.....

ohnoshedittant · 11/01/2011 21:26

OP how many YABU before you accept that you were U?

Nanny0gg · 11/01/2011 21:26

Trip, trap...

SixtyFootDoll · 11/01/2011 21:27

YABU

If she had spilt her coffee on your PFB you would be in A&E tonight

also YABU for taking your kids somewhere as grotty as a Weatherspoons.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 11/01/2011 21:28
