I tok my 18 week and 18 month old into Weatherspoons this morning. The lift was out of order so I ended up leaving the baby in the buggy, unstrapping my son and taking him a level (4 steps) to the bar to order my coffee. I took my son because had I left him strapped in the buggy he would have started arching his back and becoming agitated. The buggy was only about 12 feet away from where I was standing at the bar. My boy was toddling about, within a few feet of me while I waited to be served. A lady bought a coffee and was walking past me to her table with it, I saw my son walk round a large pillar and could possibley walk into her path. I warned the lady and said "oooh ! careful" and pointed my son. She walked past him and said loudly "He shouldn't be walking about !"

So I followed her to her seat and asked her why my son should not walk about.

Her "Its not me that says it, its this place."

Me "But YOU said it, what do you expect me to do with him when I place my order ?"

Her "Can't you strap him in a buggy?"

Me "No I will not strap my child down for your convenience>"

Her "I didn't want to step on him"

Me "All you had to do was look where you were going, I warned you he was there."

and then it carried on for another 2 minutes.

So, was I BU ????

I'm gonna get slaughtered, but I am intrigued as to whether or not you think I was out of order.

I see your reasoning, but on the sliding scale of Other People's Annoying Children, "running round a public place" is far above "creating in buggy"

puffling · 12/01/2011 20:25

Why did you go in Weatherspoons? What if your son had been accosted by a tramp while you were ordering your latte.

"Yes I did think that I was unreasonable" says the OP a few posts up.

WTF........she has answered her own question rather a bit too late for my liking - we could have all saved our energy (and sanity).

PeeringIntoTheWintryVoid · 12/01/2011 20:42

I really can't be arsed to read the whole thread, but YABVU. Saying "Oooh! Careful!" implies that this woman was in some way not looking where she was going, or was negligent in not expecting an unsupervised toddler to suddenly step out in front of her in a pub. Please note - a pub! I know they allow children, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't be aware that it's an adult oriented area. Keep your child under close control, and if that situation arises again, you may be better off shouting "Oooh (insert name of child)! Mind that lady! I'm so sorry! (to lady)".

Hmm
BluTac · 12/01/2011 20:43

I would actually feel pretty threatened, and have a suspicion that the person was a bit unhinged, if someone followed me to my table in the way you described. However, I would not have made the comment she did, but as I have a young child, I am more tolerant of them.

OnEdge · 12/01/2011 20:59

curly - that is silly, just don't read it anymore if it is driving you insane and exhausting your energy, you havn't got to read this.

madamdefarge you ought to look up the definition of a troll yourself lovey because you have shown yourself up. A Troll is someone who poses as someone else. I am a genuine poster.

You are being a bit odd now op. But you seem happy to be so.

Determination and single mindedness are impressive. There is a line though where they become obsessive and a bit bunny boilerish.

You are teetering on the edge..

Two or three more posts should do it

OnEdge · 12/01/2011 21:13

ok point taken, is it time I got my coat?

peering That's what was bothering me, and I couldn't put my finger on! You tell your child to get out of someone's way, and then generally, the adult will make room for the child (given that the child in question 9 times out of 10, will be completely ignoring you / too young to follow this instruction)

That's why she thought you were rude!

crumpet · 12/01/2011 21:23

OP you say the lady was rude to you by saying loudly that your son shouldn't be walking about and that's whY you went over to "defend yourself".

The old lady wasn't being rude. She was understandably annoyed that a mother had told HER to be careful when in fact the mother should have been the one to ensure that the child was not a danger to himself or anyone else.

You started it OP (which people are saying was unreasonable in itself) and then compounded the situation by "defending" yourself? Doubly unreasonable. And rude in both cases.

fireblademum · 12/01/2011 21:43

I've worked as a waitress. My worst nightmare was tripping over a child whilst running round with hot drinks.

MadameDefarge · 12/01/2011 21:46

n Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[

penguin73 · 12/01/2011 21:48

Madame, your back! Want some popcorn?

A1980 · 12/01/2011 21:48

You know guys, this thread will stop in its tracks the moment all of you stop arguing with the OP. It seems pretty pointless to carry on the discussion with the OP does it not?
