You know some posters tend to enter a thread with "Well I'm a Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Head Teacher" or whatever...well do you give their post any more creedence because of it or do you just disregard it completely and read what they have to say as if they'd never mentioned it?

Bearing in mind any of us can be anything we claim to be?

Thanks in advance

sassy...you say this particular bullshitter is "proven" so why don't you say summat ?

of course, it's your choice whether you stick your head above the parapet, but you seem pretty certain of your facts

hmc · 07/01/2011 22:58

I've not changed my name in 6 /7 years (other than briefly to talk about something highly personal) - simply abbreiviated it (from HandleMeCarefully originally) and I've never made up fake 'credentials'. I don't lie on t'internet (nor in real life - as it happens - am blunt and honest) - why bother, what's the point of bigging yourself up and impressing random strangers?

But it seems I am in a minority and quite naive Blush

tomhardyismydh · 07/01/2011 22:58

swanandduck people can swap names for every thread if they wish and some do i believe

Beamur · 07/01/2011 22:58

My OH got outed as having 2 personas on a forum he frequents, he had name changed but the old one was somehow still live, but the Forum moderators sussed him and made him delete one. Bless him though, he's too nice to have abused it but did consider using it to agree with himself.
I mostly take people on face value + pinch of salt. I'll give someone the benefit of the doubt and only post stuff that I think is true, but I do value the anonymity too.

Sassybeast · 07/01/2011 22:59

Because I've seen what they're capable of AnyFucker - and I'm personally not getting involved again. Which sounds like a cop out. And is Confused But if one person reading this thread thinks - 'Oh perhaps I shouldn't take everything on here at face value' then that's all good. Like I said, i've been around forums for years so know the score - there are new people all the time who haven't a clue what goes on.

hmc · 07/01/2011 22:59

Still a bit thrown by the concept that people just post a load of twaddle and pretend to be someone or something they aren't....

MarniesMummy · 07/01/2011 23:00

Tom - sre you making use of advanced seach per chance? a cunning mner if so.

Who me?

I'm not even sure what we're talking about let alone being cunning.

Good on you to carry on shredding, one day, that will be me!

AnyFucker · 07/01/2011 23:00

hmc...you are not alone

I have never, ever lied on here

not even a little exaggeration for effect

I am not a bullshitter in RL, nor am I on here (or elsewhere on t'internet)

giyadas · 07/01/2011 23:00

on some threads I suspect there are probably only 5 posters, all argueing with their alter egos.

AnyFucker · 07/01/2011 23:01

ok sassy, like I said, your choice to not get involved

nohing wrong with keeping your beak out (and a healthy dose of self-protection never goes amiss Smile)

< resolves to keep me nose out more in future >

hmc · 07/01/2011 23:01

AnyFucker - I would expect no less from you Grin

tomhardyismydh · 07/01/2011 23:02

I cant recomend it enough marnie. Grin

hmc · 07/01/2011 23:02

givadas - that is all a bit too much 'conspiracy theory' for me!

mamalovesmojitos · 07/01/2011 23:02

oh god sassybeast, that's freaky. I suppose though, the only reason it would affect you if other posters were lying is if they tried to get money or goods from you dishonestly. In those situations you have to be a bit careful about how much you ccan trust a complete stranger online.

Honeydragon · 07/01/2011 23:02

I can't be bothered to bullshit, it seems pointless to lie, no one else cares so who are trying to kid?

usualsuspect · 07/01/2011 23:03

some people do name change and back themselves up ..but you need to be aware of that if you use forums ...its just the way it is ,I'm extremely cynical when it comes to the internet but I'm like that in RL too

tomhardyismydh · 07/01/2011 23:04

so marnie can you advanced search what is going on between any and hmc and report back? i cant be arsed, but would like to be in on what ever it is.

hmc · 07/01/2011 23:05

Cheeky bugger!

giyadas · 07/01/2011 23:05

Grin I look for conspiracies everywhere. Am suspicious and worried about being left out.

tomhardyismydh · 07/01/2011 23:05

not hmc sorry I ment sassy*

MarniesMummy · 07/01/2011 23:06

Exactly, what's to be gained on a forum like this by lying?

It seems a waste of effort.

Oh! I get it,now I know why my name never gets posted on the 'I love the pants of this poster, what about you,who do you love' threads.

They suck, BIGTIME, them there threads.

hmc · 07/01/2011 23:06

Good recovery

tomhardyismydh · 07/01/2011 23:08

i knew as soon as I hit post I was incorrect, appologies Grin

mutznutz · 07/01/2011 23:08

You wouldn't believe how far some people have gone in the past with bullshit. I don't mean on here cos I've only been here about a fortnight.

On another forum there was this woman who bragged about absolutely everything. She loved to make people feel beneath her...even to the extent where someone would start a thread looking for ideas for what to cook for dinner and she'd claim to be having fillet steak, salmon, lobster etc Lol.

Anyway, she used to start threads asking how much she should tip her cleaners/gardeners and other household 'staff' until someone came along and outed her as a woman living in a council flat with a husband who was advertising himself on Gumtree as a 'House servant who was willing to do everything from cooking to cleaning shoes and will only speak when spoken to' Confused

Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with that (apart from how degrading the ad was in its wording) but bloody hell...talk about fall from a great height when she was outed!! Grin
