Do you take people at face value on here?

You know some posters tend to enter a thread with "Well I'm a Doctor, Lawyer, Teacher, Head Teacher" or whatever...well do you give their post any more creedence because of it or do you just disregard it completely and read what they have to say as if they'd never mentioned it?

Bearing in mind any of us can be anything we claim to be?

Thanks in advance
Mutznutz OBE Grin

I am the one and only.

Or am I ? Wink

lochnessmumster · 09/01/2011 20:19

I'm so full i might die.

lochnessmumster · 09/01/2011 20:22

I'm now watching vanilla ice on ice and am off to cringe behind the sofa.

AB12 · 09/01/2011 20:23

I think that generally I do take people at face value, unless they are obviously bigging themselves up, or saying really strange things.

I always tell the truth on MN, which is why I also namechange very often. I very frequently post highly personal things- some things which would out me in RL if anyone I knew was on this site. Last week, on AIBU I posted something that would in hald a heartbeat out me to anyone. I used that user name just for that thread. I know that many people find that pratice a little suspicious- often with good reason.

I have had about 6 namechanges in 18 m onths, and have now begun a policy of namechanging every Sunday pm. It makes me feel safer. Because I do not lie on this board.

I do not really understand people who get their kicks out of pretending things that are not true. There are some regulars on here that I think Hmm

flyingvisit · 09/01/2011 20:25

I often wonder if I appear to be lying as I have had quite a chequered career- it always sounds odd to state I am one thing and then another, when i am truly both lol

flyingvisit · 09/01/2011 20:25

I like the namechange every sunday idea

redshinyshoes · 09/01/2011 20:27

I was wondering this myself actually. I do think people on here make things up to give their arguments more credibility, on AIBU especially..

lovemy2babies · 09/01/2011 20:33

Did I miss something in regards to penelopes outburst post?
What is she on?

beedeeeye · 09/01/2011 20:40

Lovemy2 she's on about Ebay forums and is one of the biggest lying shite stirrers around. Beware. :o

AB12 · 09/01/2011 20:43

The only problem with namechanging very often is that people are quick to call you a troll, so if I have namechanged, I like to present my MN 'credentials'.

corns1lky · 09/01/2011 20:44

I did tell a lie once for a joke on one of those post 3 things about yourself threads (was being egged on by a norty poster) but thought it was so obviously a lie that everyone would realise.
I said that my dh once had a fight with the guy from tight fit, that I'd come 3rd in Big Brother and that I had 3 nipples. None of these were true. Later on I came across a thread where a poster was speculating which Big brother contstant I could have been. Blush

lochnessmumster · 09/01/2011 20:44

beedeeeye- I concur. Miss penelope is a total shite stirrer. Avoid and ignore her.Grin

lovemy2babies · 09/01/2011 20:52

Thanks for the headsup! Was unsure to what was going on Confused

singingcat · 10/01/2011 00:35

lovemy2 - she always posts the weirdest things, like a thread about how women CHOOSE to get pregnant, even if they say it was a 'mistake', then when everyone told her she was a twat she said she was having some kind of medical emergency and the ambulance was coming.

Pleased to see she got through that...

Well I'm mutznutz (nice to meet you) Grin

I've 'come' from an ebay spin off forum that advertised a link to MN (you'll find a few of us have)

I've only started 6 threads since I've been here...and re the 'agenda' I'm not quite sure how that works on a chat board..but your answer is no anyway Smile

So who are you and where have you come from? Grin

I generally post honestly and so tend to assume that most other posters do the same. However, like Janos, sometimes I get the feeling that people are not being honest - and other times it goes completely over my head.Blush

When I want to be too open, I namechange - and occasionally have done mischievous namechanges too Grin

I don't really understand why people habitually make stuff up - but that's because I am a very bad liar and cannot keep up with lies, so tend to tell the truth because it's easier.

I understand now why people name change if they're going to be very open about their personal lives, but I really don't understand people who name change because they think their opinion is going to be unpopular.

I think a person's outlook makes them who they are...and it's easier to form an opinion on someone's character when they're willing to stand up and say what they think.

Especially on the internet...I mean no-one's going to type you to death if they don't agree with you Grin
