20 something low closeish relative has become an escort. She has been thinking about it for a while, tried it in London, stopped but now has gone back to it in her home town. She is with what appears to be reputable agency and seems to be making quite a lot of money. Lots of reviews now appearing on her webpage etc. She appears fully happy with her choice - she had a job before (working in a coffee bar) but says that the money is better with this (she has previously worked as a lap dancer). My question is what do I tell my friends/acquaintances if they ask about her. I've discussed this with some people when she first started in London and the reaction was very aggressive "well you should have stopped her" etc etc. (hence name change) Fact is that she is an adult and this is her choice and I cannot see how I can stop her - she is making a far bit of money at this and is very financially motivated. However she is part of the family and it is difficult to avoid the questions but many people are very judgemental (of me for somehow "allowing" this to happen).

Ah, now actually running the business is dodgey.

Er, not fancying someone particularly is not quite the same as feeling repelled or disgusted.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 06/01/2011 19:36

Maybe she does want sex though, and isn't bothers who it's with within reason. Never had a fuck buddy or anything? Just no string sex whenever you fancy it. It's about fulifilling a selfish desire with no thought to the other person other than 'hope theyime this too' she gets a shag she wants, and paid, he gets a shag, aww he doesn't get anything else. Oh well both happy so no bother. Whether it fits with your world view or not some women just want to have sex, not to fussed who it's with, and they can be paid! Sounds one up from a Saturday night in my local town! Grin

"Why on earth would anybody have sex with someone they didn't actually find sexually attractive?"

Cold, hard cash, dittany.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 06/01/2011 19:43

OK, this young woman is sexually experienced, for all her youth. She doesn't mind who she shags, as long as they agree to accept her terms and conditions. If she felt repelled by a potential client, she has the right to say "no", and to leave, though she wouldn't then get paid, obviously. What she's doing is legal, and the sex is consensual, because for all you claim that consent cannot be purchased, hers is quite plainly for sale.

She's not being exploited, she's earning good money with flexible hours.

lmao at pornactress what a bloody joke

soggy14 · 06/01/2011 19:55

Explain why it's such a great idea for women to be being paid to have sex with men they wouldn't look at twice otherwise.

There's a word for sex you have that you don't consent to. Not quite the same things - she's consenting.

soggy14 · 06/01/2011 20:12

...There's a word for sex you have but don't want.

an escort does want it as long as they are paid.

..You can't type with a vagina or use it to run a construction project...

I had a baby with mine.

....Once again women are being paid to ignore their lack of sexual desire.

How is it different to working in any industry where you are only doing it because of the pay?

DooinMeCleanin · 06/01/2011 20:16

I am paid to ignore the fact that on the whole I don't like people, nor do I care whether they enjoyed their food or indeed whether they got the right order.

And I get paid shit money too. I am exploited Shock We must ban all resturaunts, immediately.

StuffingGoldBrass · 06/01/2011 20:16

Eating has its own set of organs, and while it may be a sign of or trigger for psychological problems to eat a lot when you are not hungry, of a foodstuff you don't like, people sometimes do that for money (restaurant critics, food testers etc) yet they are not stigmatized.
It;s the production end of the food business where criminal exploitation occurs, admittedly but (again) that some people are exploitative criminals doesn't mean the whole industry needs banning.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 06/01/2011 20:17

There's no need to call people idiots or stupid, this is just healthy debate, no one is asking you to do anything dittany!

Yes I have had fuck buddies I felt nothing for, it's preferable tbh, it means I can do it how I like etc as long as he's willing. Feelings confusehe matter at hand which is, I fancy orgasming, and I don't want the kind I can provide myself, I want role play, or certain angles or whatever. I've done nothing wrong, I've enjoyed myself with like minded people, why do you find it so Hard to believe not eveyone thinks like you, are you like this on other matters like religion For example?

And no it's not great for feminism in your eyes but perhaps that isn't an issue that close to everyones heart, whether it should be or not..

She has not "been put in this position", ditanny, she's chosen a course of action.

I do wish you'd give women a little more credit for making up their own minds.

DooinMeCleanin · 06/01/2011 20:24

That genreally does not happen to porstitute either Ditanny. Not ones who re not trafficked. Nor are they raped or sexually abused because they are consenting as an adult with free will to give sex in exchange for money.

That's not rape. I find it quite insulting that you think it is tbh. My sister was raped and it devestated her for years. It's not a term that should be just bandied about to suit your argument. Presuming you know what consent actually means?

BabyDubsEverywhere · 06/01/2011 20:26

To some dittany but not all, not even most if you take the industry as a whole. The industry needs tidying up that's all, it's still a valid productive industry. Have you even readthe personal anecdotes on this thread, I know of four friends, 1 relative and god know how many aquantancies who support my view, that's got to count for something!

We're discusing a woman working as an escort in Britain, not in a brothel in Nevada. The experiences will be quite different.

scurryfunge · 06/01/2011 20:31

Dooinmecleanin - I have never met a prostitute who has not been raped or sexually assaulted and I have met plenty. It is a hazard they all face.

DooinMeCleanin · 06/01/2011 20:32

That's one woman Dittany. I know of many more who do not feel like that.
