Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

I'm 5'2" and a size 12-14 five months post-pregnancy, though probably more a 12 now. I gravitate towards being a 12 generally (I blame the pies/kitkats) but look better as a 10. Was an 8 back when I did my A levels and look far too thin in the pics of that time.

I'm not sure it's particularly helpful to say 12 is 'huge' or 'large' when most women are in bigger sizes than that. I think the poster who pointed out the silent majority reading this was right.

For some, a 12 is too heavy, but for many they'll look just great at that weight. A size 12 is bigger than it used to be, but that fact doesn't automatically make all 12s fat!

I do find it frustrating that if you're new to a brand and want to order some clothes, you usually can't trust their size guides. Eg Many list a 12 as being around 28 inches - I know my waist is bigger than that right now but I can get into most 12s.

A size 12 would look large on me but I'm tiny and generally proportionate.

My friend on the other hand is nearly 6 ft and I worried when she went to a size 10, as that isn't the right size for her height. She looks much better as a size 14, so for her it is not large.

Point being it's all relative to the individual (even shops can't agree on sizing for goodness sake).

MollysChambers · 18/12/2010 00:47

All depends on your build doesn't it.

I would expect an 8-10 to be small, 12-14 medium, 16-18 large. Particularly in maternity clothes. Calling a 12-14 large is just cruel!

onceamai · 18/12/2010 08:52

I think it's all relative. In my 20s I though anyone bigger than a 10 was a bit chunky. In my 30's I was a happy 12. From 40 on I have struggled to keep the weight off (really do think it's a bit of a menopausal thing) and am 14 now. I'd love to be a 12 again but it's a real struggle and although I'd dearly love to lose a stone I don't think I'm fat although I am at the top of my BMI.

takethatlady · 18/12/2010 09:43

zonkin they make the clothes relative to height. If you buy a petite size 12 (i.e. you're under 5 foot 3) you're going to be getting the same proportions as a tall size 12 - so you're no fatter. It's proportional.

Also, you might be 5 foot, skinny as a rake, and have massive boobs! That could make you a 12! 12 is never fat.

redflag · 18/12/2010 09:56

No one seems to take into account that clothes sizes have changed, not to accommodate the fat, but to accommodate for the fact hour glass is not the usual body type any more!

So of course measurements have changed, because body shapes of women have.

colie · 18/12/2010 10:27

I know some ladies have said that at 5ft 7 inches and 9 stone I am not a 12 but I deffo am. I am a 10 in next but am a 12 in asda primark etc. I am definately not a 12 in a dress or top as have no boobs or shoulders and they hang on me.

I have a 29 and a half inch waist and on my bottom half am usually a 12! I am a comfortable 12 but a 12 non the less.

In my defense I have had 4 children and the last one was 6 months ago so this may have contributed to the extra stomache.

I have never thought of myself as large but may have to reconsider.

I just would not consider anyone at any height who is a 12 to be large.

StarlightPrincess · 18/12/2010 12:05

I think it's relevant to how tall you are and your build. A size 12 and 10 stone is always going to look bigger at 5ft than at 5 ft 6.

I myself am a 10-12, I'm 5ft 6, small build and 9 st 7lbs with a 26 inch waist and 38 inch hips. So while most size 12 clothes fit my hips, they are at least 2 inches bigger at the waist, so I have to have them taken in.

Bunbaker · 18/12/2010 16:45

FrustratedHippy
I am the same height and weight as colie and I am definitely a size 12 in jeans - I cannot squeeze into a size 10. My BMI is 20.7.

forehead · 18/12/2010 18:10

I agree with the poster who wondered how anyone knew their actual size. I am size 10 -12 and look fairly slim. However the clothes i have range from size 8-16 and they all fit me perfectly.
As others have said, your size deffo depends on your build. Weighing yourself can also be a waste of time as your weight depends on how heavy yout bones are. My dd is as skinny as a rake, but is really heavy

recyclelady · 18/12/2010 20:31

same hear smoked like a trooper size 14 gave up ciggys and started to taste food, yo yo diets now size 20 but hubby thinks i am still beautiful.

FiveOrangePips · 18/12/2010 21:34

StarlightPrincess someone who is size 12 and 5 ft, it would be very unlikely they weigh 10 stone! I am 5ft(a Topshop petite size 12, if I buy the 30inch leg length in a 12 in topshop it is big on me, more like a 14) I am under 9 stone - not sure of my exact weight, but I have 30FF/28G norks. I am very active, walk lots in all weather, cycle a fair bit and canoe(spring/summer/Autumn) usually do two fitness classes a week.

I agree with PPs who have said size should be measured by waist/height. Looking good is not dependent on size IMHO.

I do think it is pretty depressing reading size 12 being classed as large. May hide this thread soon...

StarlightPrincess · 19/12/2010 00:00

Well, one of my friends is 5ft and weighs 10st...or so she says. Hmm
