Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

Wow, LeQ - that is serious weight loss! Dangerous, even. I managed 8st at 5'6 (same reason) and looked pretty skinny, some of my so-called friends said skeletal, and had concave boobs - but yes, you must have looked quite ill!

oh I know - I lost 1.5 stone in 4 weeks. Couldn't do it again though - I'd be ill! You can get away with much more body abuse when you're younger than when you're older like wot I am.

hollynivy · 15/12/2010 15:37

Im slim but never been a size 12 as I have BOOBS! and they get much larger during pregnancy Grin

Fingon are you me? :)

going to see boss for a meeting tomorrow (on mat leave) and even pre pregnancy 'fat' work clothes are a bit tight :(

Ormirian · 15/12/2010 15:42

Compared to their size 8, as size 12 is large. That's all the labels is saying I guess.

hairyfairylights · 15/12/2010 15:44

for some it's large, for some it's small. I am just about still a size twelve, 5'3 and I am large! about two stone over my ideal weight.

noddyholder · 15/12/2010 15:45

I used to think it was huge(in my 20s) Now I think its slim(in my 40s)

booyhohoho · 15/12/2010 15:47

i am 5'3" and a size 10/12 and i am by no means LARGE. to me large would be upwards of size 18.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 15/12/2010 15:51

I am just generally amazed that I can still fit into my modern size 12 clothes at all, some of them I can't. Am definitely going up - and I feel large but only round my middle, even though I am larger than I used to be elsewhere as well. I used to be horrified at the thought of being a size 14 (having always been 10-12) but found myself buying a top in a size 16 the other day in case the 14 was too tight (didn't have time to try both on). The 16 is too big - probably should have got the 14 - but the style of it means I can get away with it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/12/2010 15:55

Clothes sizes are definitely vanity sized. Size 12 now is NOt the same as a soze 12 years ago.

I tried on some of my gran's old clothes from the 60s and 70s - they were labelled size 12, but they were very tight on me indeed, and I am a size 8-10.

jazzchickens · 15/12/2010 16:00

Clothes sizing is just a joke as it varies from store to store. We all know this yet we get so hung up on what the number on the label says.

They might as well just stick up pictures of fruit - I'm a pear, probably over-ripe and decaying a bit Xmas Grin

hmc · 15/12/2010 16:02

I don't think it is "all relative" at all. People wearing a size 12 will have a BMI of 25 and under, they are therefore not 'large'

TinselinaBumSquash · 15/12/2010 16:05

Im a size 14 and look quite overweight but im only 5ft 1. My friend is a size 14 and looks slim she is 5ft 6.. height makes a lot of difference.

I would never say a 12 is large though i think of 18+ large.

DurhamDurham · 15/12/2010 16:07

hmc it must be relative, if someone is v small , say under 5 foot, and a size 12 they will be a totally different shape to someone who is 6 foot and a size 12.

hmc · 15/12/2010 16:22

Granted - that's true, I hadn't considered the more diminutive in stature (I am 5ft 8)

hmc · 15/12/2010 16:23

But it concerns me that an impressionable 16 year old who needs a size 12 might baulk at being described as 'large' and start some ridiculous diet. I am therefore 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' over this matter

TrillianAstra · 15/12/2010 17:32

If the impressionable 16 year old is buying a maternity top then it being 'large' might not be the top thing on her mind.

LifeForRent · 15/12/2010 17:37

I bloody hope a size 12 isn't large or I'm Atkins-ing it sooner than the new year!

hmc · 15/12/2010 17:38

Dear God TrillianAstra, I was applying the principle more generically rather than this literal example [rolls eyes]

hmc · 15/12/2010 17:41

Sorry bit brusque? - feeling very irascible today

lololizzy · 15/12/2010 17:46

it's not large. I wish i was a 12 again! In USA it's def a large though. It depends on your perspective. When i lost a ton of weight i looked appalling at as 8-10 (i'm tall) but slim and healthy as a 12. Some people still said i looked too thin. Others said i looked 'big boned' and could lose a bit more. Can't ever win! Hate it when people say 12- 14 is big. Hate shops like All Saints too. their size 14's are like 10's. They don't do bigger.

igetmorelovefromthecat · 15/12/2010 17:50

I am usually a size 8-10 but now I am a generous 12 after my last dd 5 months ago. And yes I fit perfectly into 'Large' size clothes. That makes me a bit depressed, but I bet not as depressed as the poor women who can't fit into the Large size (and there are millions of them). Let's face it, a size 14 isn't exactly off the scale in terms of size, but according to some clothes manufacturers it is.

panettoinydog · 15/12/2010 18:04

As the most common sizes to be found in shops are 10, 12 and 14, it seems reasonably logical that a lARGe size goes up to 14.

TrillianAstra · 15/12/2010 18:09

I just enjoy being irritating Grin
