Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

If its any consolation, Seraphine stuff comes up HUGE.

Nanniejo · 17/12/2010 17:39

Size 12 just can't be large!! Ok it's not the smallest either, but small enough. I've been a happy size 12 for years, although on occasions have managed a size 10.After my fourth baby it did totter a bit towards 14 for a while, but with some effort I got it back to 12.

PeachyPossum · 17/12/2010 17:53

Little bit Xmas Hmm the some one thinks my personality is a so lacking that people will assume I am her as we have a slightly similar posting name. I have no issue with vague name cross overs either, bound to happen what with the thousands of posters on here.

I did however return to the shop I mentioned I am a large in and tried several other bits on and in most stuff I was a medium and the large hung off me, so even the same shop can't keep it's sizing steady.

FellatioNelson · 17/12/2010 18:15

I was feeling quite smug about slimming soen yto a size 12 but Getorf has burst my happy bubble by telling me I'm really a 1960's size 16. Sad

FellatioNelson · 17/12/2010 18:15

that was meat to say 'slimming down to'. Confused

FellatioNelson · 17/12/2010 18:16

Oh fuck it. Angry Meant. Not meat!

PrincessTwolyilah · 17/12/2010 18:51

PrincessTwolyilah · 17/12/2010 18:55

p.s my jeans are a bit loose keep falling down!!!

pippylongstockings · 17/12/2010 20:10

I have to agree that sizing has moved up on the measurement scale.

I am also a horder - I have trousers from 20 years ago I can't fit into them. However I have always been a size 12!!!!

When I was 20 I was a 5ft 7inches tall 8stone and 9lbs size 12.

Now I am 41 I am still 5ft 7inches tall but weigh 10stone 2lb still size 12 though Grin

scoobytoo · 17/12/2010 20:42

I have to say that whether one is considered fat or not is irrelevant, once a woman is over 40 it may be better to be a little bigger on the body and therefore facially look younger.

I was recently quite shocked to find out that one of the mums at DS's school was 45, she looked way younger although she was a little bit bigger (say 12-14). The younger mums size 8 looked way older, I don't think it was a co-incidence.

thebody · 17/12/2010 21:27

yes but they dont look any better just fatter faced...

sorry hate this face or figure crap as have it all the time.. posted before about my lovely mates who are all bigger than me.. dont give a flying fook what size they are but I am a size 8 and I am always getting that .. oh well we choose face over figure... when actually the face is just.. well fat..

to be honest its fatter women who are obsessed with their bodies and not smaller women.. oh and its obviously fine to make comments on us but wow betide a skinny who fights back.. then you are a bitch!!!

i get ribbed all the time.. ''oh shes going to vomit that cake now etc' and i laugh but actually its really hurtful.

sunshinenanny · 17/12/2010 21:33

As someone who sew's; most sewing patterns are still based on the old measurements except for a range that say rather coyley that they are 'sized for today's woman'.

When I made my neices wedding dress (she's six feet tall and slim) I had to advise her to go up a size in the pattern as they use the old sizing.

Even shops have different sizing and calling a size smaller than it is doesn't make one slimmer. having said that no I don't think a modern 12 is fat but hieght does make a differenceXmas Wink

luckykitty · 17/12/2010 21:39

I think one of my legs is a size 12... Grin

cariboo · 17/12/2010 22:22

I'm actually proud of being size 12! I was 14-16 for years after 2 pgs. 12 is a major achievement for me. And it corresponds to my BMI - the higher end maybe but nevertheless! Grin

onceamai · 17/12/2010 22:26

I would love to be a size 12. Years ago, I thought a size 12 was, well, quite big. Years ago I needed to grow up a bit.

FrustratedHippy · 17/12/2010 22:50

scoobytoo - that's plain insulting to thinner people

you are basically saying we look like crap

onceamai · 17/12/2010 22:58

Scoobytoo - I've just read that! Yes I am a bit bigger and yes others say I don't look even near 50. It isn't because I'm well upholstered - I have good bone structure. Two stone lighter and I'd look 21Xmas Grin

Tgger · 17/12/2010 23:35

I've just lost 9 pounds, still a size 12 (was more of a 13 before). Now I've lost this I'm starting to see how fat I am.... the big bits are drawing attention to themselves rather than just a generally rounder figure Smile.

I think it's easy to tell if you are over your ideal weight- you have fat bits you can see and feel (the old pinch an inch test).

Although I am well within normal weight on the charts basically I am fat on these terms and could easily lose another stone or stone and a half before you would tell me I was getting too thin. At this point I would be a size 10 or 8, which is what I weighed in my mid 20s when I took more interest in this side of things. I am 5 foot 6.

So yes, I think to the question if you are under 5 foot 8 or even 5 9/10 then a size 12 is big where "big" is defined as "over ideal weight".

GraceAwayInAManger · 18/12/2010 00:07

I gained my extra weight between the ages of 50-55 and I think my face does look younger. My body looks much older, though! Taking a quick inventory of friends around my age, I reckon the saying's broadly true. One of the most effective semi-surgical beauty teatments is fat injections to the face. Tells you something, surely?

zonkin · 18/12/2010 00:22

I'm currently size 12 at 5 ft 8 and I do think it is a bit tubby. I've got big boobs and a flabby tum. I tried on some size 12 jeans from my long and distant past (ie 20 years ago) and no way is today's size 12 close to what it was - much more generous now. Can't get those jeans over my knees now whereas current size 12 across many shops fit easily.

And

KalokiMallow · 18/12/2010 00:25

Really cannot see size 12 as fat, even for shorter people.

zonkin · 18/12/2010 00:29

I disagree, size 12 is fat for someone 5 ft.

colie · 18/12/2010 00:30

being under 5 ft 8 and a size 12 is not big. I am 5 ft 7 inches, 9 stone or 9 stone 3pounds on my heavier days and I am a 12 in trousers and skirts.

Some shops a 10 but most a 12. My bmi is 19.8 no way am I large.

FrustratedHippy · 18/12/2010 00:31

colie you are NOT a 12 - you can't be!

zonkin · 18/12/2010 00:33

colie - you deffo not a 12!
