Well am I?

Just looked on seraphine.co.uk for a maternity top I saw in a magazine and they have it in small, medium and large.

The large is a size 12-14!

like it niceguy but sadly its not is it???

cowboylover · 16/12/2010 21:53

Bloody hell, I dream of being a size 12 and dont even want to know how many XXXXX's mine would need if 12 is an XL!

MumMichelle · 16/12/2010 21:55

I'm size 12 and am 5 ft 10 in. Personally I think I look pretty thin! If I were 4 ft 10 inches and size 12 I'd probably think differently. It's all relative.

thumbplumpuddingwitch · 16/12/2010 22:09

I think this thread has shown that it is all relative - it has to be!

Whoever asked about large feet on short women - my sis is 5'3" and has size 8 feet. She isn't particularly large-boned but she is very overweight at 17st. However, she hasn't always been overweight so I know she hasn't a particularly large frame, apart from her feet. Mine are size 7 but I am 5'6".
I suppose my Mum's were big for her height as well - she was 5'1" with size 5 feet.

Thebody - this happened to me when I was in my teens and after my Big Break-up - I was still a size 10 but my mum people kept saying I was anorexic, which I wasn't.

I am :( that this thread has made people feel bad - why? Arbitrary labelling of clothes sizes, which are nuts, as we have been discussing, shouldn't make anyone feel bad! Size 12 can look bigger or not depending on the height and frame of the person - if it looks good on you, then why worry? If you believe you are not looking your best (as I do) then that's down to you to change if you want to/can.

If you want :( - there is a news item on here this morning about a new cushion available saying "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" - now that's offensive; and dangerous for people with image problems or leanings towards anorexia.

roseability · 16/12/2010 22:10

Oh for god sake why don't you lot lighten up a bit

It is so shallow and narcissistic to obsess about every detail of your body like this

No wonder the majority of women are body dysmorphic, I hope these attitudes aren't being passed onto daughters even subconsciously.

roseability · 16/12/2010 22:15

thumbplumpuddingwitch - I agree. These threads make me furious and it proves that women are victim to objectification, probably at the hands of a multi billion dollar diet and fashion industry run by men.

Who gives a shit about the numbers you define yourself by? Yes okay if you feel overweight and want to change that fine but what are you like, who have you loved, what are your passions?

Health encompasses more than BMI and what size jeans you can fit into.

MangoTango · 16/12/2010 22:18

I think that 8-10 = Small
12-14 = Medium
16- 18 = Large (My size)
20- 22 = XL
and so on..

thebody · 16/12/2010 22:31

thanks niceguy2 but agree with frustratedhippy.. calling a fat girl fat is not acceptable....though sometimes ache to do just that...

i understand the last few comments but actually I do really really care about being a size 8.

when I am bigger I feel bad about myself and depressed.. thats just me... i am not shallow, i own my own business and work full time and have 3 kids so busy.. but its important to me...

but to me... i dont care about how big or small my mates are.. i would consider any comments on their sizes very bad manners.. but they all fel able to comment on mine... very rude imo and upsetting..

Oblomov · 16/12/2010 22:35

"I've yet to meet a woman who would be sad to go from a size 12+ to a size 8-10. Based on this I think most ladies despite what they say, secretly realise that 12+ is fat."

Proffers handshake to Niceguy,

Agree with Longtin.
I am a size 12 niceguy. Have been for 20 years. And seeing as my weight, height,BMI, and Hb1AC gets measuered every 3 months at diabetic clinic, and no one has EVER suggested to me that I loose weight, then no, I don't wish to be any other size.

I lost some weight due to a relatonshop breakup and all my friends and diabetic consultant said I looked ill. And that would have probablty been at your 'desired' size 8-10.
so, no. You are totally wrong there.

Bunbaker · 16/12/2010 22:39

"I've yet to meet a woman who would be sad to go from a size 12+ to a size 8-10. Based on this I think most ladies despite what they say, secretly realise that 12+ is fat."

What utter nonsense. I am 5'7" with a small frame. I am a size 10/12, weigh about 9 stone 5 (BMI of 21) and look skinny. If I was a size 8 I would look anorexic.

That is a stupid and unrealistic generalisation to make.

thebody · 16/12/2010 22:41

well to add my dh thinks victoria beckham the sexiest woman alive and that christina had porked a little...

pass the sick bag..

no i mean it..

pass the sick bag... lol...

NonnoMum · 16/12/2010 22:46

Erm, just a thought...

Loads of the maternity clothes are designed and made abroad (Annee or Amy Somebody) so made for neat little Asian ladies (Singapore or somewhere)...

So, yes, a size 12 would be huge over there...

BooBooGlass · 16/12/2010 22:46

Thebody, if you are weighing yourself every day and your 11 year old is picking up on that, it is a problem.

FrustratedHippy · 16/12/2010 22:56

i am 5 foot 8 and 9 stone 4 or 5 and NOT skinny. I have boobs ( 30DD) and fat pads on hips etc

i think it is a healthy weight but i do wORK to maintain it by not eating as much as i would like

my kids do see me weigh myself a lot but why will that be worse for them health wise than seeing me overweight?

Bunbaker · 16/12/2010 23:01

FrustratedHippy
How come I looe skinny at the same weight as you at one inch shorter than you? I have no boobs and don't carry any extra weight anywhere.

Bunbaker · 16/12/2010 23:02

look not looe. Doh!

roseability · 16/12/2010 23:12

okay can we kill this thread now

who cares?

BooBooGlass · 16/12/2010 23:13

Are you the speech police?
And you forgot your

edam · 16/12/2010 23:16

Agree it's all relative. I have been blessed/cursed with F cups. They stay F cups no matter whether the rest of me is skinny or lardy. When my bottom half has been a 12, my top half looks ludicrous - like Babs Windsor in Carry on Camping. Men in white vans screech to a halt yelling encouraging phrases about not getting many of those to the pound and so on.

At the moment I am definitely fat but at least I just look big, not as if I'm about to topple over.

Lotster · 16/12/2010 23:22

"I've yet to meet a woman who would be sad to go from a size 12+ to a size 8-10. Based on this I think most ladies despite what they say, secretly realise that 12+ is fat."

Whoever said this you are a tool.

FrustratedHippy · 16/12/2010 23:47

Bunbaker - i thought that ! weird bun but totally true -people often say 'you are taller than that but infact i am just under 5 8....

and i have a bit of a tummy

Just shows!

FiveOrangePips · 16/12/2010 23:56

I feel fat after reading most of this thread (I got distracted by the bmi calculator).

I think age is an important factor too.

I am physically active, lots of walking and cycling(usually but not as much cycling because of the snow). I am 5 ft, with size 5 feet and huge (for my height) 30 FF norks. I weigh just under 9 stone, and if I am honest I look chunkier than I ever have, but not fat imho, my bmi is okay, still.

LionessLady · 17/12/2010 00:19

FiveOrangePips It's the norks, I'm telling you!! Bloody inconvenience, so they are! 32H, here Shock

ivykaty44 · 17/12/2010 00:31

wouldn't it be better to put the actual cm on the waist and length rather then a "size" that means nothing at all. At least if you know you have a 30" waist then you can wear 76.2 cm skirt.

waist to height ratio is a far better guide of your weight than BMI

when you can't get size 6 pants in M&S there is something wrong - i was told that my dd1 was naughty being that slim....
