...not really family viewing? I've barely watched x-factor in my life but I had thought everyone said that, for all its faults, it was something that had got families watching telly together. I was expecting wholesome boy bands and gutsy young girls. Clearly I'm naive and a prude.

garrow - No, family viewing Christina Aguilera's arse (arf)

pa1 · 14/12/2010 15:19

totally agree, was really shocked at what was basically soft-porn being presented as family viewing !??
It still shocks me that its seems prefectly acceptable for the majority of female performers to constantly to pander to a perception of what men want to see. It wasn't just the scanty ( and skanky) outfits, it was the routines themselves, the highly sexual moves - was truley awful, completely unacceptable for pre-watershed viewing.
After all Take That seemed to keep their clothes on and still sell records!

AbsofCroissant · 14/12/2010 15:57

Christina's arse. And that of her friend to the left in the DM pics, though that could also be her arse AND her vag.

New rule - if any woman appears on telly and it causes you to contemplate how good her waxer is - they should be wearing more clothes.

Longstocking2 · 14/12/2010 16:09

I rarely watch x factor as I think it is addictive garbage! But ds and dh watch it and I think this is really inappropriate for family viewing, it's so regressive. I mean talk about woman as sex object.
Inappropriate
and is it me or has xtina chunked out massively?
No offence... so have I since giving up smoking and having two children!
Xmas Grin

scruffybird · 14/12/2010 16:15

I thought she had really porked out and was quite covered up for her standards

takethatlady · 14/12/2010 16:56

Wouldn't mind if Take That got their kit off though pa1 Grin - in fact, when I was 12 I went to see them and Howard had his arse out. It was in the papers. I liked it Xmas Shock Xmas Wink

This has nothing to do with the general argument on this thread though :)

MummieHunnie · 14/12/2010 18:02

I haven't read the thread, I just wanted to add, that I also thought it was ott, with xtina and Rianna. What was objectionable more than the clothes was the bum sticking out stuff that seems to have caught on the past ten years and the squatting down moves followed by knee's spreading out as far as possible to show their barley covered vagina's, so you had no choice other than to look at the wonders of their beauty therpaists waxing skills!!! The children were quite eeek about it and I said oh that xtina has always been like that, I said she has a son, they were like the poor kid, how shamefull! I told them Madonna is just as bad! I should have known when xtina stepped out to sing that she would do something Dirty like that when performing!

garrowismylaw · 14/12/2010 18:17

I don't think this has anything to do with the actual act. I mean, if this had been on the TV at say 11pm then nobody would have turned a hair. Yes, it is female sexual exploitation....no matter how 'empowered' these performers will claim they feel
The bare (pardon the pun) argument is that young children were viewing something adult in content with no prior warning and that was wrong.
Yes you do get this all day long on music video channels, but they are not one of, or in fact the, main terrestrial channel.

Haven't read any of the thread but I did see the X Factor. I can't say I like the fact that talented singers feel they now have to strip off. Having said that I went to the circus earlier in the day and the costumes the female performers wore left very little to the imagination. Nobody batted an eyelid.

thebody · 14/12/2010 23:16

me and dd have watched ALL of the bloody shows. yes EVERY ONE..

have to say that if you as old as me,belive me, tele in the 70s was far far more suggestive and naughty than this was.. ever seent he two Ronnies!!!

if poor old christina wants to pretend she isnt a mom and no longer a teenager and girate her bits then so be it.. if you offended then turn off the tv..

personally i dont let my dd watch eastenders as far more death, divorce and drudgery on show there!!! and that on earlier..

marilyn monrow flashed her knickers in the 50s!!! is that dirty or just iconic...

and who bloody cares anyway.. if offended turn off... i educate my dd to laugh at this as show biz.. suggest all do the same!!

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 14/12/2010 23:20

Thebody your suggestions have been made before, and they miss the entire point of the discussion.

thebody · 14/12/2010 23:23

also just caught up on earlier threads..

'madonna just as bad'!! agree not my cup of tea but is all the out cry cos shes a woman of 50!!!

plenty of old rockers out there strutting their stuff and no where near as fit bodies as hers!!!

seriously a poster said her 11 year old boy was shocked....

mine at that age would have retired to their rooms really quickly.... still would actually!!!

and the men were sexing it up.. wagner.. oh gorg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thebody · 14/12/2010 23:27

far worse on much earlier but headed 'drama'!!

youi have an off button.. use it!!!

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 14/12/2010 23:33

There are 600 posts on this thread. It's moved on beyond 'Turn it off'

thebody · 15/12/2010 00:00

what are we stoning rhianna and christina then????

are you going to un invent sex???..

seriously??

we lived in a muslim country (dubai)for a few years and my dd is far better adjusted to the rights/rolls/ freedoms of women here than she was there..

you be glad you can offer an opinion love....
you would be jailed there..

thebody · 15/12/2010 00:07

oh.. and as a quick add on i often find with mumsnet..(though love it) you have one big mouth who states her opinion and then lots of sheep follow!!

'there are 600 threads on this post' sooo bloody what.. disagree with the poster... we all have our opinions..

still not offended.......

amijee · 15/12/2010 09:14

Well said body - we are definitely in the minority on this one.

I, too, have been making comparisons with strict regimes such as in muslim countries where there is still vast amounts domestic violence/rape/exploitation of women. I raise this issue as many are of the opinion that sexual freedom/liberality contributes to the above.

Quite the opposite I say. I think the key is to have excellent 2 way communication with your kids at all ages and about everything. My 4 yr old ds knows exactly how where babies come from down to the sperm's tail falling off when it meets an egg! I know many would dissaprove of this but I would rather he learnt things from me than the playground.

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 15/12/2010 09:58

I don't think saying 'Well it's not as bad as Saudi Arabia, so it must be ok,' is much of an argument really.

I think oversexualised performances are everywhere now, and that it's harmful to children.

Thing is it's not just my prudish opinion that drives me to take this position, there's loads of research and study out there which says it is harmful to childrens' development and society as a whole. Some of it linked above on this thread.

Surely it's better to inform yourself of the possible consequences and then decide if you agree or not?

shazzg · 15/12/2010 12:11

i've just complained to ofcom, itv and thames talk who edit the programme - about the sexism, misogyny and general vileness of the dancing on the show - didn't feel as though my complaint was being taken very seriously though....we'll see what happens i guess.who else ha complained??? any response from itv?

Onetoomanycornettos · 15/12/2010 12:21

Why is it all about protecting the children, my mum found it very offensive!

Onetoomanycornettos · 15/12/2010 12:23

And, no, it isn't always like that on the X Factor (I say as a fairly avid viewer). I'm used to scantily clad dancers and a fair bit of gyrating on TV, but that was a whole new level, which is why so many people were outraged. Should I hover over the TV remote when relaxing watching one of my fave shows just in case they suddenly change the boundaries of taste and acceptability? No, the onus is on the broadcaster to abide by the watershed and not give me any nasty surprises.

prettyfly1 · 15/12/2010 14:31

Oh come off it - you could see one of the dancers breakfasts the wrong way round on the burlesque performance. WAYYYY too much and I dont want my boys thinking that is what is normal or sexy growing up - whatever happened to looking at the knickers section in the kays catalogue as a boy - no need for it anymore!!

MsSparkle · 15/12/2010 15:32

Thanks PixieOnaLeaf, it's really nice to know that you're having a good old laugh at my expense.

With regards to the Burlesque performance, i agree it should have been on after 9pm. I don't agree though with some of the posters that said the performance was sexed so CA could sell records.

The only thing i can suggest is to watch Burlesque when it comes out. The performance was to promote the movie, which is pretty much sexed up. It wasn't to sell records by anyone and it's not like the performance didn't have any resemblance to the movie?

HermyaTheRedNosedReindeer · 15/12/2010 15:36

I've just seen the clips on youtube to see what all the fuss was about.

I can't believe they think this is family viewing, who have they got in charge of this show. All they needed was maybe one or two less articles of clothing and these people would have been naked.

Makes me wonder why our foremothers burned their bras if people think this is the norm for women these days.
