...not really family viewing? I've barely watched x-factor in my life but I had thought everyone said that, for all its faults, it was something that had got families watching telly together. I was expecting wholesome boy bands and gutsy young girls. Clearly I'm naive and a prude.

PatTheTurkeyer · 11/12/2010 21:14

I didn't think it was that appropriate I agree, but sadly not too much different (even a little milder) than what you can see on any of the music channels at any time of the day.

What gets me is they are really great singers too and in Rhianna's case she is so famous there is surely no need to prance about in your bra and pants. Great body but maybe save it for stuff that isn't targeted towards 'family' viewing.

Tortington · 11/12/2010 21:14

fgs i am glad my daughter didn't see this, the least ITV could do is put a public notification telling all teenagers that hold-ups are much easier than faffing

noonar · 11/12/2010 21:15

amijee, with a 4yo it goes straight over their heads. I have a nearly 9yo. They are aware of the sexual element. most def.

TheCrackFox · 11/12/2010 21:16

I agree that there might be worse on the music channels but we don't have those channels so a moot point really.

DS1 has just asked for the Rhianna album and i have said no.

oneortwo · 11/12/2010 21:16

has everyone who complained on here also complained to ofcom?

kerstina · 11/12/2010 21:17

YANBU i was utterly depressed at this. Rhiannas gyrations on a family show were out of order. X rated x factor tonight i am afraid.

noonar · 11/12/2010 21:18

can i repeat my request for a link, please? (see my post of 21.12 h)

oneortwo · 11/12/2010 21:18

at least with the music channels you know its there so can avoid it, but you think you can put on ITV at 8.30 if there's kids still up!

amijee · 11/12/2010 21:19

And I would also like to say that I think Christina and Rhianna will probably do more good for young girls' body images as they are not stick thin models flaunting their skeletal frames around like some of the media images we get.

And why is this so different from watching the FREE music channels at all times of the day through freeview?

Lifegoeson · 11/12/2010 21:19

YANBU

It was like soft frigging porn.

Absolutely appalled...

PatTheTurkeyer · 11/12/2010 21:21

My point about the music channels is that it has 'normalised' it to a certain extent for the music industry, as well as lots of the viewing public.

Just to be clear, didn't say I agreed with it but just maybe this is why ITV may think its ok.

It was clearly not.

oneortwo · 11/12/2010 21:22

I ALMOST laughed at the suggestion that this was good for young girls self image if it wasn't so sad that you think that!

just because there are worse offenders doesn't make them good for young girls to watch.

tabouleh · 11/12/2010 21:22

YANBU - it is a fucking disgrace.

What was soft core pornography about 30 years ago is now essentially "pop culture".

Current pornography is now extremely hardcore.

This is all about making £££ sadly.

You won't get stories about this (generally) reported in the mainstream news.

I can recommend women's views on the news for a refreshing angle on current affairs.

The story I've liked to above is about an interview with Dr Gail Dines about the effects of porn culture.

She calls the access to porn and the pornification of popular culture a massive social experiment.

We need to stand together as women, as parents and as men against this pornification and objectification of women.

I really really recommend watching that interview as it will give you all the counter-arguments against the "choice/empowerment" bollocks.

Go · 11/12/2010 21:24

May I just point out that Rhianna actually spells her own name wrongly ie Rihanna. What anyone sees in that over-produced, over-made up, mindless pap is a mystery to me.

noonar · 11/12/2010 21:24

tabouleh, PLEASE read my post of 21.12h am desperate for someone too share my outrage at this irony.

notjustapotforsoup · 11/12/2010 21:25

Do any of you that think this is U also have the Feminism topic hidden?

tabouleh · 11/12/2010 21:25

linked both threads together

Madmartigan · 11/12/2010 21:26

Is this the one?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/media_nonmember_requests/1100937-ITV1-Wants-Outraged-Mums-Sexualisation-of-your-daughter

My first link, let's see if it works.

walkinginaWUKTERwonderland · 11/12/2010 21:26

It's hardly the point that there's worse on MTV, is it?
It's depressing that talented female SINGERS have to remind everyone, kids, teens, adults, that no talent is good enough without being fuckable as well.

Madmartigan · 11/12/2010 21:28

Let's try that again

this one?

tabouleh · 11/12/2010 21:28

yes - any of you who have the Feminism topic hidden yet are worried about this - you need to wake up Grin

noonar - I agree with you - I've linked the threads - I reckon you'd like the Gail Dines interview - this is all about £££

The porn and music industry are worth £££.

No way ITV is going to draw attention to its own shocking behaviour!

noonar · 11/12/2010 21:28

well done, tabuleh.

amijee · 11/12/2010 21:28

I think you have to get into the psyche of young girls.

They will spend hours pawing over fashion pages wanting to be as thin as some of the anorexic models. So to have their musical role models looking a healthy weight will have a massive impact on their own self image and allow them to feel beautiful when they have curves.

I must say..I am quite shocked at how prudish everyone is. It's the sort of thing my mum would say and she's in her 80's!

Pop stars have always been around to shock - however they can. There's nothing new about prancing around semi clad. My parents used to want to switch off when pans people came on top of the tops years ago! I thought it was ridiculous then as I do now.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 11/12/2010 21:28

Rihanna isn't her real name, it's robyn.

DuelingFanio · 11/12/2010 21:29

noonar that's a very good point.

you mean this thread?
