Well, thoughts please?

OP posts:
pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 22:07

I think that sounds a bit short. I wear dresses that short and i am 21!! lol

granted · 10/12/2010 22:16

You're 39, not 89!

pollyetc - when you reach our grand old age, you'll realise that actually you're not required to dress like an old lady as you approach 40 - your body doesn't actually fall part, no-one will notice or care if you wear a short skirt, and you can hold off on the headscarves and pinnies for a good 40 or 50 years yet. Hmm

I recommend all to read "When I am Old I Shall Wear Purple" - see

labyrinth_3.tripod.com/page59.html

If anything, sod it, the older you get, the less you should feel the need to toe some silly line and dress according to others' preconceptions, really.

xkittyx · 10/12/2010 22:22

I wear short skirts (mid thigh) with opaque tights all the time when I go out and I don't think I've even got amazingly good legs. I do stick to A-line or flared though. I'm 35. Once I've had a few drinks I don't give a shit :)
This whole rules around age thing is daft. I still feel far more at home in New Look than M&S.

takethatlady · 10/12/2010 22:24

What is with people? 39 is nothing! I'm 28 and pregnant and I hate all this frumpy maternity crap I'm confronted with. I'm fertile age and I'm going to dress like a tart however I want. And I'll be doing that when I'm 39 too.

Wear the dress! If you think you look good in it, then you probably do. 39 is young!

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 22:25

I dont think dressing like an old lady is apporiate, but i think dressing for your age is. I think a dress just above the knee would probs look better. Nothing worse than seeing mutton dressed as lamb! Not saying the OP is mutton, or lamb lol but im sure u know wot i mean.

xkittyx · 10/12/2010 22:39

No I really don't know what you mean? So it's okay for you at 21 but someone who has reached the staggeringly vast age of 39 should drop their hem, even if their legs are just as good?

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 22:46

Yes, i think it can look tacky to see a 39 (so nearly 40) year old women wearing what is essentially a mini skirt. If my mother, who was 39 in october wore something like that i'd need to shake her back to reality. She will be 40 next year, and she is a size 10, but she doesnt wear things like that, she wears dresses but them hem line is noramlly around her knee.

xkittyx · 10/12/2010 22:53

I think you see 39 as much older than it actually is because it's your mum's age.
Trust me, it's nothing, and it's not like your brain rewires over 30 and you suddenly love Per Una (unless you were prone to love it already).
The tackiest stuff I've ever seen is girls in their late teens/early twenties wearing clothes that are completely wrong for their size and shape. I have seen far too many builders bums/muffin tops/cellulitey thighs on the very young in the last few years.
A bit of firm, shapely thigh in your thirties/forties/fifties as part of a great outfit, on the other hand, looks wonderful.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/12/2010 22:53

I'm nearly 37 (sob) and if anyone said to me or my friends that we had to stop wearing short skirts in 2 years we would all have hysterics and think said suggester was from the 1950s...

I wore a minidress to soft play today. And went down the slide Hmm Grin

And say what you like about mutton dressed as lamb, I've never seen a lady in short skirts, fishnets, leopardskin, thick lip gloss, flashing cleavage and stiletotoes having anything other than a good time. It's those elegant, pearl wearing, tailored ladies that always end badly in novels... Grin Scientific fact.

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 23:01

If ladies in their late 30s and 40s want to dress like sluts then do what u like.

The OP has asked for opinions and i gave mine! I think it's tacky as well when ppl in their teens dress horribly too.

Are u actually fuckin serious u wore a mini dress to a soft play?? Or r u pulling my slim cellulite free leg??

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/12/2010 23:04

Nice.

xkittyx · 10/12/2010 23:05

Yes, real little charmer.

sethstarkaddersmum · 10/12/2010 23:09

Polly's post is very unpleasant.
I think it shows what we already know, that there will always be nasty people who will carp and bitch about what other people wear, but these will be the people who are simply not very nice and hence not worth worrying about.

stickylittlefingers · 10/12/2010 23:12

wear what you like, OP, life's too short to worry about judgeypant eejits.

I dont think my post is unpleasant. I gave my god damn opinion, so what cos i dont agree with a 39 y/o wearing a mini skirt i aint a charmer?? Get a life FFS and go pick on someone else!!!

If OP didnt want judged or opinions she wldnt have asked in the first place!!!

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 23:19

Dont get what you are on about. I gave my god damn opinion.

madamimadam · 10/12/2010 23:22

If you like it and like wearing it, why not?

Who knows whether you'd like what judgeypant eejits wear anyway?

I'm sure you'll look lovely in it Smile.

I do not always like women over 40 wearing short dresses/skirts. Some women get it right but some not and they look like Simon Cowell, if you know what I mean. He looks ridiculous in those trousers and t-shirts trying to look like a teenager.
I myself would love to be able to wear a short dress when I hit late 30s. Very long dresses and skirts do make me attractive at all. Does not suit my body type.

If you feel comfortable then wear it.

I'm 46, have 5 kids, soon to be a gran, and am wearing a tight denim mini skirt at the mo and have no cellulite on my legs thankyouverymuch. Nor am I a slut.

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly · 10/12/2010 23:28

Cos ppl always jumping on each other here!!! Just because i said i think it wld look nicer if hem line was a little longer i get a bunch of abuse? Well i can dish it back ladies! As i have said countless times this is my opinion on the OPs question - that she asked for. If she didnt want to hear 'negative' things then she wldnt have asked
