I think if a 39 year old is in really good shape then they could wear something stylish but I wouldn't show leg at that age. People are using Elle Mcpherson as an example but she is hardly your average woman. I agree she would look fab in anything but she is a supermodel and looks a lot younger than her age. Even if you're really slim old face plus short skirt doesn't look good.
I used to work with a woman in her 40's who had a fab figure (better than mine at 25) and she dressed in skinny jeans (which sometimes rode down when she crouched to reveal an animal print thong!) and low cut tops. She also used to plaster herself in make up. I felt sorry for her (and her daughter who also used to work there) because she had such a nice figure that if she'd have worn something stylish but less revealing and more natural make-up people would have been complimenting her but instead she was often the butt of jokes.
No one's suggesting half-mast pants and a fleece just yet but I don't necessarily think revealing flesh is looking your best once your over a certain age. But OP if you look in your 20's I say go for it!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 10/12/2010 23:45

Thing is with the knee-length thing, knee-length dresses/ skirts look awful on me, because although I have long (reasonably slim) legs, I don't have the nicest knees, so they don't do me any favours, focussing on my worst bit! Somehow slightly shorter dresses make my legs look far better- and always have done, regardless of age!

At 38 I am slimmer (by far!) than I was at 28. I look like a frump in skirts just-above-the-knee.

granted · 10/12/2010 23:46

polly, I think we find it as amusing that someone young enough to be our daughter is telling us what to wear, just as you do that people old enough to be your mother wear short skirts sometimes.

I don't think we're going to bridge that generational divide.

BTW, all my kids are still at primary school, even though I'm the same age as your mum. Which may explain our different clothing habits - I feel a lot younger than your mum probably does because my eldest isn't old enough to give me grandchildren for many years to come.

Your poor mother - you remind me of Sapphy in AB Fab.

Or was that before your time? Grin

My mums youngest has just turned 7! I stil have two siblings in primary and one in high school. So i dont think thats the reason.

I have my mums old videos of Ab Fab which i do like. Altho hopefully you dont like act like her mother.

Actually someone made a good point about the above the knee thing. It's a really unflattering length for a lot of people as one's knees are the thickest part of that general area. My legs look much nicer if my skirt is a few inches higher.
I really don't care what people think, I dress like the same alterna-chick I always did and I don't see that changing soon.

mathanxiety · 11/12/2010 04:28

I couldn't do it as my legs are sticks too skinny.

I agree with the either/or thing -- either short or lowcut front and back, but not both. Since the dress is deep pink with scoop neck and back, I think it would be really borderline, and much would depend on how low those scoops are.

I also agree tights = good, leggings = bad. What kind of shoes were you thinking of? I think shoeboots might be called for, but I like the high mary jane idea too. Does your neck look skinny/wrinkly just at the bottom?

takethatlady · 11/12/2010 09:10

polly I wasn't involved in that conversation but I don't think anyone was being aggressive toward you - you were the one who brought in words like 'slut' - that word is so derogatory, has nothing to do with the length of someone's skirt, and is a word I think no woman should ever use to describe another woman because it is a misogynist and horrible word. I think that's the point people got really annoyed with you - not for your opinion. Nobody else was using language like that, which is off topic anyway.

I think people think you are showing your age because you see 39 as old. As most of the threads suggest, it really all depends on figure, body shape, confidence in the dress, cut of the dress, and so on - as it does for anybody at any age. My mum is 50, she's a size 10, she's stunningly beautiful (it's always her and never me that gets chatted up when we're out together, even though I'm 22 years younger than her!), and though she probably wouldn't wear a miniskirt these days she would certainly wear a sexy midthigh dress and look bloody gorgeous in it. Haven't you seen Sex and the City? Those women are in their late 40s and look fantastic. Tess Daly is 41 and she was on Strictly Come Dancing last night in a beautiful cleavage-revealing dress and looked stunning. Jennifer Aniston is over 40. A midthigh dress looks great on a woman with good legs, regardless of her age.

granted · 11/12/2010 09:11

No, Polly, can't say I'm that much like the mum in Ab Fab - don't drink for a start.

But do wear short skirts on occasion - as do all the mums my age at the school gates (at least the ones with good legs). Why not? Can't believe that in this day and age we're still berating women for wearing short skirts - it's like being back in the 1950's. Are we expected to wear floral pinnies and have our husband's tea on the table for him every night, too?

monkeyflippers · 11/12/2010 09:12

Someone you thinks 39 is old is still a bit of a kid in my eyes. A very young and immature 21.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 11/12/2010 09:38

pollywollyhadadollycalledmolly - I aggressivly disagree with you. Sorry.

(Now, lets read back and see what she said.)

classydiva · 11/12/2010 09:50

If you have the figure for it why not? I would and Im 45.

pollywolly is going to end her life at 30 i believe.I bet im not speaking for just my old self when i say i have a better body than lots of 20 yr olds i see out and if i didnt i certainly wouldnt wear crop tops and hipsters with a muffin top or saggy boobs under a tight t shirt.

dustythedolphin · 11/12/2010 12:51

I think its more to do with size than age

A 50 yr old can look fantastic in a mini if she has good legs and the neckline isn't low as well

A 20 year old can look obscene in a mini (or indeed leggings) if they are too tight and there if flab and bulge going on - Eeeew

Tortington · 11/12/2010 12:52

gof or it - fuck everyone else

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 11/12/2010 13:08

Agree with whoever mentioned that above the knee / knee-length is very unflattering. Unless you work in a bank, avoid. Calf-length isn't much better. With the right cut, tights and shoes almost everyone can look good in a mid-thigh range regardless of size.

I have pretty long legs (34") and therefore almost all dresses are mini on me to start with and owing to school sprinting my calves are tyson like er...athletic so the only length I can really wear and look good in is mid-thigh (I have nice legs fwiw). This situation is not going to macially change in 2 years time.

MissPolly I hope the doctor came back in the morning for your (chill) pill pill pill.

WeeScotsLass · 11/12/2010 13:55

Yes, it all depends on the legs (and the bum!). The yardstick is whether when you put your legs together, is there still a gap at the crotch? If there is, then your legs should look fine. Good chance that if legs OK, so will rthe bum be! Do it.
