Well, thoughts please?

OP posts:
BBL1 · 10/12/2010 12:22

If you feel good, look good, go for it.

Me, I would be Witney dressed as Brittany.

PinkElephant73 · 10/12/2010 12:28

Go for it - Im 37, 7 months pregnant and wearing a mid thigh tight dress at the moment (with leggings under and waterfall cardi over, to be fair).

if you can carry it off why not?

Mummy2Bookie · 10/12/2010 12:30

Depends
If over 35 or with arse and legs to match the size of the back of a bus it's a no no no.

HarrietTheSpook · 10/12/2010 12:30

Not about age at all!

It's always about fit whether you're 19 or 39.

Really not sure I could have carried it off at 19 myself, but you may well be slimmer and more statuesque...!

TiggyD · 10/12/2010 12:31

If it fits and you look good, wear it.

I would.

Quenelle · 10/12/2010 12:35

It's not about your age or your size. Good undies, good posture and an air of confidence are all you need. I say go for it Xmas Smile

Ryoko · 10/12/2010 12:40

Wear what you like and to hell with what anyone else thinks.

wintersnow · 10/12/2010 12:43

It doesn't matter how old you are!!! I see young teens in short dresses who look awful and deffo should not be wearing one... Then you get women in their 50's who look fantastic

notpartofthelifeplan · 10/12/2010 12:47

Hmm just my opinion but I would think mutton. Up to you though if you don't care what others think and you like it then go for it.

FellatioNelson · 10/12/2010 12:52

Erm, I think it is about your size a bit.

I know this is an unpopular view, and we all want to shout 'Go for it with chutzpah and flaunt your curves and to hell with the rules' and all that shit, but do you want to be laughed at or sneered at for looking ridiculous? I know I don't. There are things that flatter big girls and things that flatter skinny girls. (personally I cannot stand seeing people with really small tits in push-up bras.) By all means wear what you like - just don't expect other people to think you to look nice.Hmm

(that wasn't directed to anyone in particular BTW)

Asteria · 10/12/2010 12:53

I am just off to Scotland for the weekend and have packed a mid thigh denim skirt and an equally small lbd - I am a size 12/14 but thankfully have still got the fab legs I had whilst a teenager. Everything else has been ravaged by my DS so I like to appreciate what I have left!
I share the school run with two ex models in their 40's (who still look amazing and could hop back on any catwalk without any prior starvation or pruning!) and the temptation to shroud myself and hang my head in shame every morning is overwhelming - but I feel tonnes better for a slick of mascara and a skirt!

Confidence is all that matters (unless you end up looking like one of Viz's Fat Slags!!!).

MrsLucasNorthPole · 10/12/2010 13:00

How would it look with opaques and knee high boots with a heel - might tone it down a bit (or not depending on the boots!!!) Xmas Grin

Ephiny · 10/12/2010 13:00

If you think it looks good on you, and you feel happy and confident in it, then yes. Anyone who would laugh or sneer at you for contravening some non-existent fashion rule isn't really worthy of your consideration, it's their rude behaviour that's the problem, not your choice of skirt.

Who even does that anyway? I often see women wearing things I wouldn't wear myself or personally don't think is very flattering for them (and others probably think the same about me) but I wouldn't dream of pointing and laughing, and have never had anyone do that to me.

Vallhala · 10/12/2010 13:12

Oh wear it, please! I would have at your age, but now, 7 years older and no longer a size 8 to 10 I can't. Envy

And wear it with tights and heels, not bloody leggings! :o

I hope to goodness you never feel as I do now, but if you do, I promise you that you will NEVER look back and think, "If only I'd have worn a longer dress...". :)

Have a lovely time at the party, enjoy the compliments and come back and tell us all about it. :)

EatingAngelPie · 10/12/2010 13:17

i remember as a 23 year old eyeing a woman enviously as she stood in black miniskirt suit, and then her three teenage children came to say hello (in East Grinstead Sainsburys, v. nice area) ...

I bet she's on MN.

daisyj · 10/12/2010 13:56

Well I'm 38 and I would - my legs are my best feature (and distract attention from y post dd tummy). It sounds fab, but I'd go for shoe boots or a mary-jane (heeled, obviously, but not stiletto - that's just me though - don't like stilettos with anything vaguely mini). And yes, opaque tights, not leggings! Oh, and I really dislike knee boots with minis too - looks cheap imho(sorry MrsLucas).

I'm 39 and would def wear a mid thigh dress. Has to be with opaques though I think, in very solid blacks or dark greys, and I usually wear shorter lengths with ballet flats in an attempt to channel Audrey Hepburn rather than Liz McDonald. Have rediscovered my legs a bit over the last year - wearing shorter hems now than I would have done 5 years ago. Not remotely muttony if your legs are OK, you wear it confidently and hold back on cleavage etc.

An old lady ( 80+) came up to me in a dept store the other week when I was doubtfully holding up an LBD and said ' Oooh, that looks lovely, enjoy it while you're young!', which made me think she was right - I don't want to be old for the next 30 years - it'll come soon enough without deciding that 39 is time to roll out the calf length skirts!

changeforthebetter · 10/12/2010 14:16

If you like it and it fits then wear it and then forget about it and enjoy the party Smile

monkeyflippers · 10/12/2010 14:20

oh no daisyj I wear short skirts and boots all the time! Does that make me cheap? Oh fuck it who cares! Smile

RussAbbotDancer · 10/12/2010 14:28

If you have the figure, do it. Premature ageing through boring, or "sophisticated", clothes is such a waste.

Another vote for opaque tights, or M&S do a footless opaque bodyshaper tight (fashion singular).

I'd probably wear black heels, not patent, but I'm sure there's a colour alternative if we can see the dress?

'Walking round Warehouse/Oasis/New Look last week I didnt see any velvet.;

Where are you? Here the windows of both the massive New Look and Warehouse both have velvet dresses in this week?

mrsSOAK · 10/12/2010 15:22

I am 34 and I would not wear mid-thigh skirts/dress. I hate my legs and since the birth of dd I have put on a fair amount of weight and feel quite self-conscience about my figure. I went from a size 6/8 to a size 12.

IMVHO leggings offer no more coverage/support than opaque tights
If you are happy to wear it and feel good in it then please do so but don't spend all night pulling it down or pulling it up etc....
