Well, thoughts please?

Go for it - wear nice opaque tights. My 43yo friend is size 8-10 with long dark hair + often wears minis with tights + boots. She looks great. I'm 34 + size 14 so my minis are ruffled to disguise my btm. Not sure if it is ok on me but got bored of jeans + leggings.
Have fun at the party :) ...

Stangirl · 10/12/2010 08:46

The legs are the last to go and I fully intend to carry on wearing minis into my 50s. Probably with opaque tights though....

I am currently 41 and have nice shapely legs. I almost always wear either body con dresses that finish way about the knee or A-line tunics that barely cover my bum. My friends always comment on how stylish I look and how lovely. If it suits you, wear it. I don't believe in age appropriate just body appropriate..

Yanbu and I am jealous. My belly is way too wobbly so for Xmas do I have got a loose frumpy dress :(

dickiedavismincepies · 10/12/2010 10:38

No no no no not leggings!! Tights, nice thick ones if you want but if you're going to wear a sexy dress then don't shove a load of thick lycra on underneath.
BTW I am v jealous. My legs resemble a couple of old stone pillars that have been recently graffiti-ed.

YABU, a mid thigh tight velvet dress would only be appropriate if it was still 1987.

As its not, then Id leave well alone.

There are lots of lovely dresses out there that you can wear, why go for something that will look tired and old and like youre trying too hard?

Anniegetyourgun · 10/12/2010 10:58

I have a friend who's 52 and would look fabulous in the outfit you describe.

I would wear it personally, it sounds great and if you have the figure then go for it.

I was wondering myself when it is necessary to stop wearing short skirts and I'm 33! Think it's because i've been feeling a bit frumpy though.

mosschops30 · 10/12/2010 11:12

Really? Or just back in fashion for the kind of women who shop in Boden and similar places and 'think' its back in fashion.

Walking round Warehouse/Oasis/New Look last week I didnt see any velvet.

Like I said, plenty of lovely stuff out there (especially French Connection) for Xmas parties.

And dont forget the rule that if youre old enough to remember it the first time round then youre deffo too old to be wearing it second time round Grin

mosschops30 · 10/12/2010 11:13

oh and have nothing against women of any age wearing anything of any length, but mid thigh velvet Hmm

dickiedavismincepies · 10/12/2010 11:17

"Walking round Warehouse/Oasis/New Look last week I didnt see any velvet." Can't imagine you saw much more than fabrics that need to be kept away from naked flames.

The Autumn/Winter collections from Gucci/Prada/Stella McCartney were full of velvet.

dickiedavismincepies · 10/12/2010 11:21

Oh and you wear UGGs so your fashion opinion is null and void regardless.

mosschops30 · 10/12/2010 11:21

oh dickie i didnt realise the poster was designer shopping.

I only buy 'normal' clothes not things that are made for pre-pubescent size zero freaks and wouldnt be worn by any normal person.

My mistake

mosschops30 · 10/12/2010 11:22

now now, no need for personal attacks, its not MN.
Play nicely.
Or are you just another middle aged loser sat wearing velvet whilst tapping away on MN Grin

tillytips · 10/12/2010 11:25

yep sounds good, as long as there is not legs and cleavage. One or the other, not both!

Pacita · 10/12/2010 11:27

I'm with dickiedavismincepies, the high street is hardly an indicator of high fashion. And fashion is what goes out of fashion, anyway.

If the colour and shape suit you, wear it. I think opaque tights and nice pair of possibly black swede hills would work. I would not go for stilettos, as they may be a bit too flimsy with a tight dress. Also, I would probably have some sort of elegant cardie on top to make it more casual.

Can you not post a pic so that we can be nosey give you more accurate advice?

Ormirian · 10/12/2010 11:29

If I were a little slimmer I would. And I'm very old Grin

I do wear mid thigh skirts as I have good legs but the 'tight' bit is a no-no these days.

FellatioNelson · 10/12/2010 11:38

39 is not too old to wear anything necessarily, but it depends. On your legs. Your tights, your shoes, and your figure generally. And if you are showing lots of leg don't even think about showing lots of cleaveage or bare shoulders/arms as well.

PercyPigPie · 10/12/2010 11:57

I think it depends on your face as much as your body. I find it a bit ewww if someone in really tight clothes turns around and has a face like a bag of spanners Grin.

healthyElfy · 10/12/2010 12:01

Check you dont just look good standing straight with shoulders back etc, how do you look walking, sitting, getting in the car etc. If you still look fab then age doesnt matter :)

MayorNaze · 10/12/2010 12:03

do it

and be confident about it, don't be there rounding your shoulders and tugging at your hemline, that will do you no favours. stand up straight, nice makeup, walk tall :)

FindingAManger · 10/12/2010 12:04

if you've got the legs/thighs for it and if you feel comfortable go for it. Actually even if you don't have the legs/thighs for it BUT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE then I'd still say go for it if that's what you want to do!

Will you look back when you are 70 and sigh oh I really wish I hadn't done that? Or I wish I had done that more????

Litchick · 10/12/2010 12:07

For me, it would say 'trying too hard'.

I'd be more inclined to go for something well cut, designed to flatter, rather than show off, iyswim.

Whelk · 10/12/2010 12:08

Can you post a pic ?
