Depends on your figure and also legs and also which tights and shoes and also which top. Mini skirt with low necked top is terrible on any lady generally speaking.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 10/12/2010 15:41

How funny. I nearly bought a black, velvet mini dress last week.

It was in New Look and down to a fiver. It reminded me so much of my youth I nearly bought it.

I wouldve looked fine, I dont belive in age realated rules on dress.

But I never go out anymore and it wouldnt have been practical for my main activities.

WEAR IT!

EatingAngelPie · 10/12/2010 15:42

Select had loads of velvet - like this

Colourworld · 10/12/2010 16:21

Make sure it does not show your muffin top ( I do have a little one, he-he) if you have one. Look at this picture www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1337451/Never-heard-Spanx-The-Only-Way-Is-Essexs-Lauren-Goodger-unflattering-dress.html Looks ugly and she is 23 not 39.

traceybath · 10/12/2010 16:27

If you feel good in it then wear it.

I'm 38 and wouldn't probably do mid-thigh for evening unless it was a skirt with a very covered up top.

But think nothing of wearing very short denim skirts with opaques in the day.

Do you have a link for the dress?

Rollmops · 10/12/2010 16:43

It's never about the age per se, it's about how you look.
Well, within reason of course (i.e 65 year old may look positively stunning but would never pass for someone in her 30s etc.)
There are masses of women who should would never wear anything that has less coverage than XXXL sack of something.
So, only you know if you are svelte and elegant enough to pull it off...

TheProvincialLady · 10/12/2010 16:49

Well it doesn't sound the classiest dress to me, but it's not about your age, it's about your figure and ability to carry it off. Have you got someone to ask whose style you like and who you can trust to be 100% honest?

Rollmops · 10/12/2010 16:56

How does the dress look apart from being mid tigh? I suppose one with long sleeves and not too tight (one of the biggest fashion faux pas) or better yet, a straight cut and simple boat neck would look nice. Anything revealing however would have a tramp stamp firmly fitted on the backside.

cupcakebakerer · 10/12/2010 17:11

I think if you've got the body go for it! Dubious about velvet aspect of the dress but that's just me. Is it back in or something?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/12/2010 17:20

Well I'm of the opinion that you should wear what you want whatever your age.

You're 39 FFS, not 79...what are you supposed to do? Curl up and die in the beige section of Country Casuals?

Maybe this 'not X past the age of 30 / 35 / 40' passed muster before feminism and before we lived to reach our 80s but really 39 is a stripling.

And for all those nay-sayers, I hear there are great 2 for 1 offers on slacks at Damart.

"Style is originality; fashion is fascism. The two are eternally and unalterably opposed." - Lester Bangs (he died at 33 so maybe a bad example!)

MrsGuyOfChristmasBorn · 10/12/2010 17:23

I am ancient and wear short skirts - wore one to the office party earlier this week - would agree that not cleavage and legs together but one of the other is fine.

cupcakebakerer · 10/12/2010 17:24

Tights are also a saviour I reckon.

MrsGuyOfChristmasBorn · 10/12/2010 17:24

TS - lol @ the beige section of country casuals! I always think it a shame when people cover themselves up in sacking rather that tastefully show off their good bits Xmas Grin

saintknickerless · 10/12/2010 17:42

People should wear what they feel comfortable in but I must admit that unless you look A LOT younger I would be thinking mutton dressed as lamb. Particularly if it's in combination with overdone hair, too much make up, fake tan and false nails. Sorry.

I'm 41 years young (5 foot 8, size 12,) and am wearing quite a tight, fitted black dress to my big xmas party. Its sleeveless, but with a high neckline and almost knee length and i was told by friend and DH that it looks ACE, so i'm going for it!! Tis only once a year!

i feel good in it tho, thats the key. If you are relaxed and happy in your outfit, it shows. shows up even more if you are not tho, so be sure, then go for it!!

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 10/12/2010 18:22

I went to a caberet themed birthday party at 41 and wore fishnets with hotpants over and knee high boots a backless waistcoat and a trilby,i have had 4 dcs and have a nice but not perfect figure felt fab and gave the school Mums a run for their money haha
I aggree look in the mirror if you dont feel comfy with any aspect of it then dont wear it ie if your arse looks fab but your belly sticks out dont risk it as will spoil your eveing.

beanlet · 10/12/2010 19:56

Tights, but just make sure your bumcheeks aren't sagging down below the hem at the back Grin

and yes, I have actually seen that before

anonymosity · 10/12/2010 19:59

if you have a body like Elle McPherson (who is scratching 50) then fine, if you look like Beth Ditto no, don't do it (though I expect Beth Ditto would!)

thefirstMrsDeVere · 10/12/2010 20:01

I think the biggest mistake people make is to wear a size too small. That picture of the girl in the Mail is a perfect illustration. That dress doesnt fit her.

dreamylady · 10/12/2010 21:01

It's the 'office party' bit that bothers me - I'm 40ish and wear short skirts and opaque tights and knee high (flat) boots all the time, even to work. But I think I'd feel uncomfortable in something top and bottom bodycon with people i work with. But then I am a bit uptight Wink

mickeyjohn · 10/12/2010 21:14

If you feel confident and you're comfortable, you will look fab! Age means NOTHING - like (some of) the others have said, it's not about age, it's about what shape you're in. You can look crap in a short skirt at 22 if you've got really bad legs. Have you seen Elle McPherson recently? She is 49 and looks AMAZING. No-one's gonna be telling her she can't wear a short dress cos she's too old!
Do it, have fun and enjoy!

Sequins · 10/12/2010 21:15

No, go for it Xmas Smile

Actaully would add, if in any doubt, wear it round the house for a few hours, so you get used to it, see if it rides up, no straps showing, so youfeel comfortable in it so you're not constantly pulling it down, adjusting etc. - ie when you wear it for 'real' it wll feel natural, you will look confident.
