To be upset that DP gave me his mother's engagement ring?

DP and I have been together for several years. We've talked about marriage but we had to wait until he was settled etc. Then finally last month he proposed while we were on holiday.

I was of course very excited and had been looking forward to choosing a ring with him. But now he has given me his mother's ring saying that he wants me to have that instead.

I am upset because while it's a lovely ring it's not what I would have chosen myself, and given I only plan to do this once this is the only opportunity for me to pick a ring that I would have wanted.

Dp is very well off and there is lots of wealth in the family, so it's not as if we can't afford for me to have a ring of my own.

so ibu?

petratsdontsmell · 16/11/2010 18:06

OMG I've heard about that ring- it is really really unlucky! Give it back NOW!

TheLogLady · 16/11/2010 18:06

pawn it and get somefink nice from elizabeth duke.

AgentZigzag · 16/11/2010 18:07

Course you aren't love, why don't you kick up a fuss and make him get some cash off his family to get you a new one?

Good luck - you're gonna need it Smile

Fimbo · 16/11/2010 18:09

Get yourself knocked up quick love. Kids are great at hiding things. Then persuade DP to buy you a sparkly new one.

NorwegianWould · 16/11/2010 18:09

Console yourself with the fame photographs and immense wealth / real estate that yyou are about to marry into Wink

violethill · 16/11/2010 18:09

I'd break the engagement off now love - just look at the family track record of happy marriages

Shallishanti · 16/11/2010 18:10

Does he love you?

JamieLeeCurtis · 16/11/2010 18:11

YABU (unless there's some info we are not party to?)

What kind or relationship did did mum and dad have?

SauvignonBlanche · 16/11/2010 18:11

He sounds tight to me, bin him!

Vallhala · 16/11/2010 18:12

Orf with his head!

GrimmaTheNome · 16/11/2010 18:13

YABU

His family are really really green, yah, big into 'reuse, recycle'.

AnnieLobeseder · 16/11/2010 18:13

Weeeeeeelll, I guess it depends how BIG his mum's ring is. I 'spose you could tap him up for LOADS more rings, then you'd have lots that are more to your taste. I'd say the pros probably outweigh the cons here, m'dear!

anonymosity · 16/11/2010 18:14

Since when are you supposed to choose your own engagement ring?
Not everyone gets one. Some folks are more interested in the marriage than the trinkets.

GlynistheMenace · 16/11/2010 18:15

i think you might find it's not even his to give away!!!!

anyway, sapphires are SSSOOOOOOO 80's dahling (hides from MNers who have sapphires Wink )

huddspur · 16/11/2010 18:16

One of my friends wears her husbands grandmas wedding ring as her wedding ring.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 16/11/2010 18:16

Sounds like there are already three in the marriage.

Get out quickly.

AgentZigzag · 16/11/2010 18:19

My wedding ring used to be my grannys wedding ring, theirs wasn't a happy marriage.

KatieQueen2B · 16/11/2010 18:19

Well, his mum and dad got divorced when he was fairly young so his mum was a single parent.

His dad apparently had another woman for the whole of their marriage and has since married her.

Dp is very much expected to follow in his father's footsteps in terms of his career etc.

As long as he doesn't say anything creepy like, oh I dunno, this is his way of letting his mother get excited about the wedding, then you might be OK.

Tidey · 16/11/2010 18:20

I'm not remotely superstitious but it seems like a bad luck charm to me.

BalloonSlayer · 16/11/2010 18:22

You might need to check that his mother's skeleton is not in a rocking chair in a back room somewhere. I hope his house hasn't got a lot of rooms, lol, otherwise it could take you some time.

KatieQueen2B · 16/11/2010 18:23

Oh BalloonSlayer he said almost exactly that. Shock

And I did find that creepy because his mum passed away some years ago. Sad
