To be upset that DP gave me his mother's engagement ring?

DP and I have been together for several years. We've talked about marriage but we had to wait until he was settled etc. Then finally last month he proposed while we were on holiday.

I was of course very excited and had been looking forward to choosing a ring with him. But now he has given me his mother's ring saying that he wants me to have that instead.

I am upset because while it's a lovely ring it's not what I would have chosen myself, and given I only plan to do this once this is the only opportunity for me to pick a ring that I would have wanted.

Dp is very well off and there is lots of wealth in the family, so it's not as if we can't afford for me to have a ring of my own.

so ibu?

I think DP's stepmum would have shoved it in his face, and his mum would be spinning in her (island) grave.

Why would Harry inherit the ring, btw?

Xenia · 16/11/2010 22:39

You have no entitlement to a ring at all. This can be a great test. Given the fuss your causing over this surely that's a sign you're not right for him and only after his money. He should back away slowly and find someone who is not materialistic and would love him if he gave her a ring made out of pieces of thread.

HarrietTheSpook · 16/11/2010 23:00

Is Xenia the only one who doesn't get this? And the brainest of the lot? Wink

LittleWhiteWolf · 16/11/2010 23:05

Hee hee hee

crystalglasses · 16/11/2010 23:40

And did you see the interview with them this evening where Wills said to Kate 'if you lose it you'll be in big trouble'.
What a scandel it would be if she did!

StableButDeluded · 16/11/2010 23:53

YABU, it's a lovely gesture, though I would ignore the earlier advice given to use it as a butt plug- it may cause an Annus Horribilis(in more ways than one) Grin

MoralDefective · 17/11/2010 00:06

Awwwww,innit loverley..

MoralDefective · 17/11/2010 00:08

FUCK OFF,THE LOT OF THEM...

Alouiseg · 17/11/2010 03:16

Run like the wind Katie!!!! Spend some time on the relationships thread and put some distance between you and that ridiculous family.

And for Gods sake don't piss Philip off.

Always check your brake pipes.

QuintessentialShadows · 17/11/2010 03:27

LOL!!!

I cannot imagine Queen Katie.

I thought Katie Price was Queen Katie. There can BE no other queen katie......

I think her parents and her birth cert calls her Catherine.

QuintessentialShadows · 17/11/2010 08:08

Thanks for reassuring me Xenia! Grin

When Diana died apparently the ring went to Harry - he chose it as a memento of his mother.

says so here but I found out at an exhibition about famous pieces of jewellery, including several of hers, and there was a little card with a picture saying her engagement ring went to Harry. It stuck in my mind because my friend made a joke about Harry's taste in jewellery...

noeyedear · 17/11/2010 09:12

Have they swapped then? i would have thought the Cartier watch would have been more Harry's style!

theevildead2 · 17/11/2010 09:17

YANBU! I have seen this ring, and it will definitly lead to muscular arm which is not befitting a princess anyway!

MollieO · 17/11/2010 09:20

I wonder if Kate got the matching earrings as well.

FindingMyMojo · 17/11/2010 09:20

well it depends - was the marriage of his parents happy and joyous? If so you are probably being U.

However if the ring secured an engagement that led to a marriage that was loveless, lonely, desperate, ended in divorce and ultimately leading the the early demise of one of his parents, I say return the ring and run away as fast as you can luv. Clearly your fella barely has half a braincell to knock together in there, if his thinks giving you a ring from a previously doomed relationship is a good idea!!

I mean if his Mum was wealthy I'm sure he would have loads of her other rings to offer you, or to be remodelled into something more suitable and unique that could both honour Mummy & the bride-to-be.

StealthPomBear · 17/11/2010 09:29

melt it down and get it made into a belly button ring

MooMooFarm · 17/11/2010 09:35

I would smile gratefully and imagine how much I can get for it on ebay when it all goes tits up....

ADreamOfGood · 17/11/2010 09:36

Dont worry- he was bidding on a lovely pink one last night... Wink

SleepingLion · 17/11/2010 10:03

Ohhhhhh, OP, be wary of becoming Queen Catherine. After all, the last English Queen Catherines were of Aragon, Howard and Parr - all married to Henry VIII - and look how they turned out...

Run! Run like the wind!

frakkinup · 17/11/2010 10:08

Actually the last Queen Catherine was the wife of Charles II...

frakkinup · 17/11/2010 10:09

Grrr. Was going to add that she wasn't particularly lucky either - no surviving children and universally unpopular.

Mooos · 17/11/2010 10:13

It was actually impossible for him to have fallen for her sister - Queen Pippa just doesn't work.
