To be upset that DP gave me his mother's engagement ring?

DP and I have been together for several years. We've talked about marriage but we had to wait until he was settled etc. Then finally last month he proposed while we were on holiday.

I was of course very excited and had been looking forward to choosing a ring with him. But now he has given me his mother's ring saying that he wants me to have that instead.

I am upset because while it's a lovely ring it's not what I would have chosen myself, and given I only plan to do this once this is the only opportunity for me to pick a ring that I would have wanted.

Dp is very well off and there is lots of wealth in the family, so it's not as if we can't afford for me to have a ring of my own.

so ibu?

I suspect over the next few years you'll have the opportunity to aquire, buy and wear many many rings. Wear this one for now and look forward to the rest that will head your way.

Hulababy · 16/11/2010 19:10

My wedding ring is made from the gold from DH's grandma's wedding ring - was too small, so had it melted down and reformed.

TrillianAstra · 16/11/2010 19:11

That's lovely Hulababy :)

Alouiseg · 16/11/2010 19:13

The "ring" is obviously cursed!!!!

Wear it as a Buttplug on your wedding night, you just can't beat a pretty ring.

MummyBerryJuice · 16/11/2010 19:13

You see, I thought Harry was meant to inherit that ring too frakkit. Surely it's not your DP's to give then?

potplant · 16/11/2010 19:23

Perhaps Harry gave it to Will as he knows that if he ever gave it to Chelsea it would be lost down the back of the sofa at Bouji's by Christmas.

choufleur · 16/11/2010 19:26

Will your parents be doing party bags for all the guests KatieQueen2B?

scottishmummy · 16/11/2010 19:31

doors to manual your brains oot to lunch marrying into that family

SleepingLion · 16/11/2010 19:35

ameliarosesmum · 16/11/2010 19:35

Heh heh! Give it back straight away. It is CURSED. And really SO 80's, more importantly.

scottishmummy · 16/11/2010 19:41

onceamai · 16/11/2010 19:43

Took me a while sleeping Lion but then I got it Grin when I checked the OP and noticed the name. [embarassed]

Good luck OP - he seems quite nice. Get a pre-nup though - better safe than sorry.

BonniePrinceBilly · 16/11/2010 19:44

I'm pretty fick, it took me a while! Foreigner too though so it sorta passed us by......

RunawayChristmasTree · 16/11/2010 19:45

It was worth 28K when his mum got it, have it valued

loopylou6 · 16/11/2010 19:49

Bloody help. I only just got it.

AuntyJ · 16/11/2010 19:52

Bloody Hell 28k! Sell it on Ebay and get a copy off QVC , who will now be knocking up replicas.
In fairness we have to congratulate your DP on is eco-friendly outlook. This is recycling at its best.

ohmeohmy · 16/11/2010 20:09

if you look into the deep blue jewel does it say anything? Like 'run...fast'

IvantaOuiOui · 16/11/2010 20:34

use it as a cock ring

MrsBonkersSniffsTurps · 16/11/2010 21:30

Personally I'd be more concerned about whether the ring was a good luck emblem or a curse.
Grin
Certainly wouldn't want someone elses cast off ,in case it was tainted with bad luck Shock

But I'm sure you'll be fine KatieQueentobe, I mean what is the worst that could have happened to your prince charmings mother Shock

twoboots · 16/11/2010 21:44

someone talked about melting it down; harriet kelSAll made my engagment/ineveitablity ring.

they will take stones and metal from an old ring and incorporate it into a new design.
It was lovely getting it done, I went in and said "I want it assymetitric and the color of autumn"
I got to spend an hour playing with various chocolate and canary diamonds.

hmmm chocolate.

cloelia · 16/11/2010 21:55

Hi Katie, loving your blue engagement pictures dress. Were you channelling your late m i l 2 be's own engagement snaps? Do tell us where you bought it... Jigsaw I assume?

keepingupwiththejoneses · 16/11/2010 22:01

Are you marrying a royal?
YABU most people would think that is was a lovely gesture.

PinkIceQueen · 16/11/2010 22:03

Ha ha, he loves you as much as his mummy, wear it for a bit and then "lose" it, i'm sure he'll buy you another ;)

Summerbird73 · 16/11/2010 22:10

all i will say honey is do make sure your wedding dress is ironed properly and not rammed into the wedding car!

and if you keep away from shopkeeper's sons you will be fine!

blueshoes · 16/11/2010 22:18

How come your dp's stepmum did not get the ring instead?
