I am so bloody mad! My Nan had a stroke last week, i went to see her today i thought telling the doctors who are looking after her that i have an hereditary thrombophilia, mutation that causes more blood clots, So i went to the nurses station.

The nurse said "hello can i help you?" i said "yes i would like to inform a doctor that i have a hereditary condition that causes blood clots, as my nan has just had a stroke

She sniggered at me!

Aibu to think she should be shot in the head for being such an idiot!!!!

No sorry i lost my cool, AIBU to think nurses should be professional and not laugh at people who are concerned for their relatives, especially when they are attempting to give them relevant medical background?!

Sorry that was all jumbled up, i am still so mad! please excuse all the mistakes in my post :(

She should not have sniggered but what was your point? Did you think you should have been hospitalised too?

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 21:59

were you wondering if it was relevant to your grandmother's treatment?

yes she shouldn't have sniggered but your query probably pushed her over the edge and she is now rocking in a corner dribbling quietly.

bubbleOseven · 20/10/2010 21:59

Sorry, but I would have sniggered too.

Have you ever considered teaching your grandmother to suck eggs Grin

onepieceoflollipop · 20/10/2010 21:59

Agree with scurryfunge.

Also I am unclear what you wanted her to do? Do you have specific concerns re your own health? If so you need to see your own GP or (if urgent) A&E - not the ward staff where your relative is admitted.

If you were informing them that your health condition may have some bearing on your grandmother's treatment/diagnosis, perhaps you weren't very clear.

tbh I would be a bit Confused if a relative of one of my patients approached me and started talking about their own health concerns.

maktaitai · 20/10/2010 21:59

She certainly shouldn't have sniggered, it's part of her job to untangle what people are saying and get the point, which was presumably that your nan has (may have?) thrombophilia. She was extremely unprofessional and it must have been upsetting at such a worrying time.

Did you get to a good end point, i.e. did the information get passed on?

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 22:00

or was she in the middle of something else more amusing as a hereditary condition which causes clots/stroke just isn't funny at all and it seems a strange reaction.

Pushmeinthepool · 20/10/2010 22:04

I think the OP is saying that she was telling the nurse about her own condition in case it was relevant to her nan, ie in case her nan had the condition too. It didn't come across to me as though the OP was asking for medical advise or treatment about herself.

So OP no I don't think you're being unreasonable. Some nurses are a law unto themselves though and think they can speak to people as they wish.

louii · 20/10/2010 22:04

She maybe was confused as to why you were telling her about your health issues. Possibly a nervous giggle as she didn't know what you were on about.

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 22:06

or maybe she was a jolly type who giggles and sniggers alot?

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:07

Do any of you know what hereditary means? It means i have inherited the gene mutation from someone in my family, so she may be at very high risk!
She will have been asked if there is any family history of dvt's or strokes and my grandfather would have probably said no, When in fact there is, as i have thrombophilia

By the way no she was not doing anything but sitting on her fat arse staring into space.

And cheers girls! at least you lot are not rude either :/

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 20/10/2010 22:08

Apologies if I have got confused. I thought you were asking the nurse for medical advice for yourself and I get the impression the nurse thought that too.

gapbear · 20/10/2010 22:10

I think your OP was not very clear, incrediblesulk, understandably since you are so cross.

You were right to ring in with possibly pertinent information.

YANBU with the nurse's reaction. She could have perhaps been a little more sensitive.

fairycake123 · 20/10/2010 22:11

YADNBU for thinking she should be "shot in the head" for being such an idiot.

bigstripeytiger · 20/10/2010 22:11

Maybe she was confused about what you were trying to say?

Not great to have giggled, but some people do that as a nervous thing.

bubbleOseven · 20/10/2010 22:12

OP- hereditary means passed down. that is, your nan possibly passed it down to you. You didn't pass it up to her

The staff already know she's at risk from stroke because she's just had one Confused

However, some nurses ARE rude pratts, especially trained nurses, it's just that usually they are rude to the auxilliary nurses, but perhaps there weren't any auxilliarys around at the time.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:13

No she didn't i was very clear to her, she was a moron who didn't know what she was doing, she said she would inform a doctor, though i don't believe it for a second!

Why would you think i would ask a nurse for medical advice?

OP posts:
NoelEdmondshair · 20/10/2010 22:14

It doesn't matter what the nurse thought, she still shouldn't have sniggered.

YANBU.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:14

OH MY GOD bubbleoseven are you really that stupid?

Shock
OP posts:
PictureThis · 20/10/2010 22:15

But you weren't asking for medical advice. You were imparting pertinent information in relation to your Nan's condition. I can assure you a nurse is perfectly capable of passing that information on to a doctor.

bubbleOseven · 20/10/2010 22:15

elaborate please

scurryfunge · 20/10/2010 22:16

Because your OP wasn't clear....it should have been blindingly obvious that your nan has issues with circulation because she was the one in hospital with a fucking stroke.

The nurse was rude and you were upset.

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 22:17

but that's what i meant. it isn't funny so why should she have smirked/snigeed/giggled?

and sitting on her fat arse probably meant filling in interminable paperwork and assessments, updating bedstate, discharging, computering, checking results, booking scans, liaising with OT/PT/social workers/doctors, insulting auxilliaries, ringing home to speak to her children who she hasn't seen for 3 days, all while officially on her break and trying to read heat magazine.

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 22:18

it was probably official 'Smile' week and she was being forced to be cheerful. was she wearing a jolly sticker?

Sidge · 20/10/2010 22:19

If you were as rude to her as you are being to posters on here then I imagine she wasn't particularly inclined to treat you kindly.
