To think nurses should be professional!

I am so bloody mad! My Nan had a stroke last week, i went to see her today i thought telling the doctors who are looking after her that i have an hereditary thrombophilia, mutation that causes more blood clots, So i went to the nurses station.

The nurse said "hello can i help you?" i said "yes i would like to inform a doctor that i have a hereditary condition that causes blood clots, as my nan has just had a stroke

She sniggered at me!

Aibu to think she should be shot in the head for being such an idiot!!!!

No sorry i lost my cool, AIBU to think nurses should be professional and not laugh at people who are concerned for their relatives, especially when they are attempting to give them relevant medical background?!

1 i know how how inherited mutations work! i cant even be bothered your statement is so dumb i think i actually have blood coming from my eyes!

If i inherited it from her (keep up here it gets difficult i know) she still has it, she didn't pass it onto me and rid herself of it!

Two her risk of a second stroke, dvt's pe's and other clots forming is mega high!much more so than a "normal" person after having a stroke!

Picturethis, i would normally think so too, but after her display of total ignorance, unprofessionalism and dickheadishness, i wouldn't expect her to do so.

OP the nurse should not have sniggered so YANBU to be annoyed by that.

But, I imagine that it is a bit weird for a grandchild to state a hereditory problem for their own grandparent's condition (we inherit these things down the family line, not up). I imagine that might be why she sniggered, in an unproffesional "well dahhh" sort of way. Not excusing the nurse just trying to understand why you got that reception.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:23

I am not a rude person Sidge, i was not expecting a barrage of people saying they would laugh too, when they didn't manage to grasp what i was talking about!

Bloody right i am being rude back!

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/10/2010 22:24

"Do any of you know what hereditary means?" Hmm, a bit uncalled for. With many hereditary conditions, ancestors are carriers without having the conditions themselves.

You have four grandparents, you could have inherited from any of them. Is there any reason to believe you inherited from this grandparent? Wouldn't it have cropped up earlier in her life if she had it?

I think you were less than clear in the way you expressed yourself.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:25

Lark love i would have inherited it from her! What are you going on about! seriously am i actually in the twilight zone!

DoraBelvedon · 20/10/2010 22:25

Anyway. How's your Granny? Hope shes improving.

purits · 20/10/2010 22:26

Didn't we have a thread the other day about ward staff insisting on filling in admission forms at 4 o'clock in the morningShock about very important medical information (like 'what is the name of your pet?' Hmm).
Yet when someone tries to volunteer what they think is relevant information (I have no idea if it is or not, not medically trained, but I understand your thinking, OP), they get sniggered at ...

scurryfunge · 20/10/2010 22:26

No one is saying that they would have laughed too.....most are agreeing the nurse lacked professionalism by laughing. The point being made was that you were stating the bleedin' obvious.

pagwatch · 20/10/2010 22:27

Theincredible

to be honest I suspect that your fury is a by product of your fear and concern over your Nan

My DD nearly dies because of a deeply stupid woman who was pissed off with a collegue and chose to ignore processing my DD in order to retaliate.
The fact that she was stupid, unprofessional and fucking rude was just who she was though - nothing to do with her profession. She would have been rude incompetent and useless whatever she had chosen to do.
It was just a shame that she chose nursing.

thebrightside · 20/10/2010 22:28

Yes YABU to think someone should be shot in the head!

No she should not have sniggered, but are you sure she understood completely where you were coming from? I'm sure she would not be in that career if she did things like that out of spite.

If you are not confident she will pass on your concerns, pass it on to another nurse, or doctor.

brimfull · 20/10/2010 22:30

I am concerned about your bleeding eyes ,are you sure you have thrombophilia

sorry couldn't resist
yanbu she was unprofessionsl and you should def shoot her in the head next time you visit

Sidge · 20/10/2010 22:30

Your posts aren't especially clear; Bubble0seven made some reasonable comments about hereditary conditions that you may not have known and you were very rude to her. I imagine she was trying to be helpful.

Given that your nan is in hospital being treated for a confirmed stroke I would imagine that the medical team are well aware of her clotting factors. I hope she's recovering well.

ScaryFucker · 20/10/2010 22:34

if you approached the nursing staff with the attitude you are displaying now, you should have been escorted off the premises by the security staff

you got off lightly

TandB · 20/10/2010 22:34

Not sure a thread about a seriously ill grandmother merits some of the hilarity on this thread.
Sorry to hear about your nan, OP. My great-grandfather had multiple strokes and the family were regularly told that he was on his deathbed - only to be very surprised to open their door to him the following day after he "fancied getting out for a bit of fresh air." Hope your nan pops up on your doorstep in similar manner very soon.

ScaryFucker · 20/10/2010 22:36

the thread isn't actually about the poorly grandmother, it is about an uppity nurse that didn't dance attendance on the OP

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:37

Scurryfunge, except the person who said that very thing?!!

My nan is doing much better, she is getting her speech back now but her right arm is still not working at all :( she needs an oxygen mask, so they are looking for blood clots on her lungs in the next few days (funnily enough that is what i have at this very min) but she is getting stronger by the day.

pagwatch i am sorry to hear you were let down too.x

thebrightside, it was a joke deer! :/

Whereyouleftit, yes she had a fucking stroke!

OP posts:
larks35 · 20/10/2010 22:37

Theincediblesulk1, you may well have but she is now in hospital and is going to be tested and treated accordingly. You haven't said how you know about your hereditory condition but I imagine it was through the care of doctors and nurses.

I actually think your information should have been treated with more respect, hence my saying YANBU. But, I also can imagine that your information might have been deemed as too late due to the stroke your nan had already suffered.

BTW just written this and realised I haven't said how sorry I am that your nan is in a bad way. I really hope she comes through.

aw bless you.
It's hard to know what the nurse thought: that you were stating the obvious or diagnosing yourself on the basis of what's just happened to you nan.
But she , of course, shouldn't have sniggered.

OnceUponA · 20/10/2010 22:41

Hope your nan is ok. Can't understand why the nurse sniggered or why some posters here can't seem to be understanding you.

Interesting comment by poster who said that hereditary conditions get passed down and not up. Ha.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:41

No actually it was out of the non care of nurses and doctors leading to my son being stillborn! thats how i found out, should i be grateful then?

No if she had the thrombophilia, it may change her treatment all together! Its the sort of thing they need to know so i told them, been telling my grandad to tell them for a week!

She is on the road to recovery thank you

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/10/2010 22:42

"... Is there any reason to believe you inherited from this grandparent? Wouldn't it have cropped up earlier in her life if she had it? ..."

"Whereyouleftit, yes she had a fucking stroke!"

Well, two of my grandparents had strokes, neither had thrombophilia.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 20/10/2010 22:42

OnceUponA, thank you xxx i am actually crying where i am so upset by this thread, but you have made me feel sane xxx

TandB · 20/10/2010 22:43

I have spent more time than I would like in hospitals over the years - multiple operations as a child and three close relatives with terminal illnesses. I think I can say with some certainty that I don't recall a single nurse sniggering when discussing any aspect of a patient's care.

scurryfunge · 20/10/2010 22:43

OP, take a step back and concentrate your efforts in supporting your nan.
