Love this paper, but on here so many of you seem to despise it, why?

TotorosOcarina · 11/10/2010 19:24

I read it online to laugh at it.

I like to laugh at it at work .. Not my choice of ummm " newspaper "

GMajor7 · 11/10/2010 19:25

I have to admit I do buy it for the puzzles Blush

Spero · 11/10/2010 19:26

I 'like' the Daily Mail in the same way I 'like' my bag of Haribo marshmallows. I know it will make me feel sick and ashamed afterwards, but it tastes good at the time.

I think most people hate the Daily Mail because it is a misogynistic rightwing scaremongering celeb comic, pretending to be a newspaper.

But I still guiltily enjoy its features, even if they are telling me to hate myself for a)working b)having cellulite c)being a woman

sixpercenttruejedi · 11/10/2010 19:26

in all fairness, the DM despised women first. It's only natural that the feeling would be reciprocated.

o yes! Watch Dan and Dan op and all your questions will be answered.

4andnotout · 11/10/2010 19:51

I love it and don't care what anyone thinks :)

OrmRenewed · 11/10/2010 19:52

It's a dirty little rag with pretensions to being a proper newspaper.

Spero · 11/10/2010 19:53

mmmm, thinking maybe that's not quite true, or why would you be here?

UnquietDad · 11/10/2010 19:55

It has articles which seem to hate women for being too fat/thin or too overdressed/underdressed, and yet most of its reporters are women... how does that work?

lilyliz · 11/10/2010 19:55

I buy it too, better than the Sun(takes 5 mins to read)or the daily record,(same)and the puzzle pages keep me amused for the rest of the day.

AlpinePony · 11/10/2010 19:58

YANBU - as universally loathed as it's claimed to be - it is also the most read UK media. So there ya go - there are a lot of Daily Mail closet fans. Man up Jessies - admit you love it! "I only read it to pour scorn" - who're you fooling luv?

Spero · 11/10/2010 19:58

Unquiet dad, sadly i think it taps into the worst of the female psyche - when our desire to communicate tips over into bitching about other women.

that stuff is potent - all my friends who affect to despise it, still read it on line.

cupcakesandbunting · 11/10/2010 19:58

It works because the lady DM writers are mouthbreathers, UQD.

Hqve you seen Jan Moir, ffs? She's about as qualified to dish out sartorial criticism as a shirehorse.

Limelight · 11/10/2010 20:05

Oh YA most definitely BU. Whatever your political leanings, it's badly written, reactionary, and offensive (unless you happen to be a reactionary, offensive, white, middle class man!).

Read anything else. Anything!

vixen1 · 11/10/2010 21:05

I like it because all the bullshit is so obvious. I can never be led astray by the Daily Hate Mail because the tripe it spouts is so transparent.

If I read the Guardian or the Times I think I would be far more likely to believe the content and would be therefore leaving my-gullible-self wide open to the inevitable propogander...

WinkyWinkola · 11/10/2010 21:12

It's full of hatred. No one of intelligence would regard it as anything worth taking seriously.

But I do read it online for the celebrity hatred. It's quite funny.

But I guess that's hypocritical of me. Never mind.

WinkyWinkola · 11/10/2010 21:13

That Amanda Platell though. WHAT a total bitch. Get her on MN. She is truly toxic.

GoldenHaze · 11/10/2010 21:23

YABU. It's a right-wing, homophobic rag.

Lilka · 11/10/2010 21:26

I read it online but then I check at least three online sources a day (BBC, guardian and DM). It is badly researched and I don't bother to read health stories at all, but they tend to have more real life features than other papers, and good celebrity gossip. I just hate the comments left on some articles that make my blood boil, most recent being a guy saying that thank goodness two kissing women had been kicked out a stadium in the US becasue "lesbianism is disgusting" !!! He had been green arrowed. What the Fuck???!! I nearly went through the roof. So yeah... hate it but am addicted at the same time, I think it's the online format they have nailed, which is why they gate a lot of readers in.. it's an attractive easy to read format, other papers don't have that online.. and since the Times has started charging for the pleasure of reading archived articles. No way am I paying for online news thanks very much!

katedan · 11/10/2010 21:28

YANBU, I read it every day and think it is the best paper around. I consider myself intelligent enough to not beleive every article and see through the health scares, celebrity bashing etc.

Having said that Jan Moir should have been sacked over her article about Stephen Gately. That was horrid and unpleasant even by DM standards.
