to be saddened by a three week old baby in full time childcare?

At a local toddler group last week there was a childminder who I'm friendly with, she had with her a new child, a baby of 3 weeks who's mother had gone back to work full-time in teh pub she and her husband own. I am not judging this woman, it's her choice but I couldn't help but feel sad at the situation.

It's utterly sad - my parents ran their own business and we had a live in 'nanny' - a friend of family who also worked for them. Maybe an au pair would be a better, cheaper idea for them.

TheMulledBloodsOnMe · 11/10/2010 14:39

It may be sad but you don't know the woman's circumstances. It might be a matter of having to work in order to keep the roof over their heads. I am a Childminder and I have never cared for another baby this young but even in my job, it would mae me sad too as it's not something I could or would ever do.

YANBU.

ChunkyChick · 11/10/2010 14:39

Poor little mite.

faverolles · 11/10/2010 14:40

I posted on another thread earlier about a mother at my dc's school who doesn't work, yet has all childcare handed over to others, and has done since her ds was 2 weeks old. She's expecting her 2nd, and will do the same thing.

YANBU, and it's very, very difficult not to judge, but according to a friend who's a nursery manager, it's quite common :(

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/10/2010 14:40

YANBU

CrazyPlateLady · 11/10/2010 14:40

I was only just about walking again after 3 weeks! How is this woman working!!

I'm assuming as its their own business, they have no choice.

Seems a shame though.

alicet · 11/10/2010 14:41

Yes its sad that this baby's mum is missing out on this time with her child. But thats her business. Like someone else said if she and her dh own the business there may be no choice.

PhishFoodAddiction · 11/10/2010 14:41

I want to say YABU as it's none of your business...but it is sad.

Marjee · 11/10/2010 14:41

Yanbu Sad

bigchris · 11/10/2010 14:43

Full time in a pub though might be a lot ofevenings and weekends so her dh might be with the baby
if you run your own business you don't get the luxury of maternity leave
perhaps if she doesn't work the baby won't have a roof over it's head

going · 11/10/2010 14:43

That is very sad but she probably doesn't have any choice.

bigchris · 11/10/2010 14:44

Maybe the mother cries in the loo all day at work because she misses her baby so much
I'm sure it's not a choice to work so much but a necessity

Gincla · 11/10/2010 14:44

YANBU, I'd feel sad too, 3 weeks old and with a complete stranger? They must be desperate!

lilystyles · 11/10/2010 14:44

Obviously I don't know her circumstances but either way I think it's a sad situation

OP posts:
letsblowthistacostand · 11/10/2010 14:44

I wouldn't imagine that anyone could do this unless they had no choice.

Gincla · 11/10/2010 14:45

Why have a baby then if you KNOW you will have to go back work 3 weeks post delivery? Confused

Of course it's sad, poor mum and poor baby.

LynetteScavo · 11/10/2010 14:45

I think you'd get a different type of response if you posted this in the evening. I shall come back and have a look then.

At what age do you all think a mother should go back to work?

PinkieMinx · 11/10/2010 14:46

If you are self-employed running your own pub you know the situation you will be in if you have a child. This was a choice - have a child and pay for a childminder, rather than have a child and pay for extra bar staff. It is sad for the tiny baby and the parents choice.

MumInBeds · 11/10/2010 14:47

I can understand why you'd find it upsetting but I imagine there are babies in this country (not to mention around the world) who are in a much worse position than being cared for by a registered child minder.

PinkieMinx · 11/10/2010 14:47

In the evening when the mum's get in from work you mean LS? Smile

LynetteScavo · 11/10/2010 14:48

I meant;

What age do you all think a child should be before the mother goes back to work back to work?
