My little boy has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was totally heartbroken when we found out! Since then when people have offered him sweets/at partys/in shops, when I have to tell people he can't have things and why, This is usually followed by chubbie thirty to fifty year olds moaning to me that they or a relative have type 2 diabetes and how hard it is for them!

Type 2 is self inflicted.... btw..
I am soo angry that this has happened to my son.... He is only 4 (through no fault of his own Or anyone else) I just want to shout at them to shut up,stop eating so much shit and move around a bit more!!

This may not make sense, but AIBU?

PPS "chubbie thirty to fifty year olds moaning to me that they or a relative have type 2 diabetes"

I assume you do realise that you can't catch diabetes from a chubby relative!

Kewcumber · 25/08/2010 10:21

PPPS - Oblomov - wehre do you get "chocolate crisps" form?

macdoodle · 25/08/2010 10:22

Coralanne, could we have some evidence for your sweeping statement that " most Type 2 diabetes is due to overeating"??
As a GP with a special interest in diabetes I would strongly dispute that, and out it the other way round!
Could you post a link to the evidence to support your statement please?

kittywise · 25/08/2010 10:24

but I never said it was easy

macdoodle · 25/08/2010 10:26

Kitty, from what you're saying you come across as a fairly sick and disgusting individual really. I don't overeat. I do exercise everyday and can run 2.5km in 10 mins. I'm obese on the BMI charts. I'd love to be slim and 'attractive' but my dh loves me. My kids love me. I have many friends. Do you know why? Because despite being a size 16, I am a NICE person. You should try it one day.

pigletmania · 25/08/2010 10:29

I do agree sanielle, these people are trying to empathise, understand how hard it is to have diabetes and that you are not alone, and all you can do is to internally resent, be nasty, not nice at all! As I said you need help and support.

pigletmania · 25/08/2010 10:32

Enjoy your fish and chips Altinkum, mouth watering at the thought of delicious salt and vinigar lovliness Wink

kittywise · 25/08/2010 10:33

Ah cheers thanks for putting me right on the fat family eating pastries must be a one off then. All the fat families eating pastries, all a one off yeah right

ShadeofViolet · 25/08/2010 10:37

What a nasty OP.

I've not read the whole thread, so just shooting in here with my worth, but just to let you know sugarray - my mum has type 2, yeah she carrys a bit extra, yeah she likes cake, but hers is due to having a brain tumour some years ago that was growing on hes pituitary (sp) gland. And quite frankly we let her have at the cake she wants, because we're lucky she's here at all.

But I'll pass on the message that you think she's a fatty and its all self inflicted, she'll be over the moon... Hmm

God, I'm glad that kittywise isn't a friend of mine. I am struggling with depression, have poor self image, and am overweight. The depression makes me constantly tired, and makes it very hard for me to motivate myself to do anything to care for myself - why should I - I don't believe I am worth caring for.

I am dragging myself out of the black pit, and hoping to be able to come off the antidepressants - and I also hope that when I am well, I will be better able to look after myself - but if kittywise was my friend, her nasty attitude would knock me straight back into the depression that is keeping me overweight.

pagwatch · 25/08/2010 11:07

SDTG

don't worry . Kittywise isn'there to make friends. She is all about being obnoxious saying it like it is

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/08/2010 11:11

just looked at your picture kitty (if that's you with your dd) and you seem to be a skinny thing - is your venom from depriving yourself of pastries perhaps ?

SolidGoldBrass · 25/08/2010 11:24

A lot of antifat prejudice is misogyny too.

ivykaty44 · 25/08/2010 11:29

Just veacuse someone is slim does mena they are depriving themselfs of particular foods, I am lim but eat the foods that I like, but I don't like sausage rolls or pastry pies, I never have and would eat it if served at as a guest but never pick a pie for myself.

Don't think that slim people deprive themselves of food - they often don't it is just they eat differntly form people who are larger, soemtimes - othertime not often there will be a genuine reason why soemone is larger.

LucyLouLou · 25/08/2010 11:32

Okay, haven't got time to read through everything just yet, will try later, but quite clearly YABVVU. You're OP is borderline offensive tbh. I know you're upset but there's no need to be so bitchy. If you're not coping very well with your son's diagnosis, perhaps a counsellor might help? I hope you don't say any of this in real life. Seriously.

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/08/2010 11:34

I know that slim people can also eat lots of old tut and not get fat- my point was that kitty's comments give away a bit of a thing that she seems to have about fat. At the very least she has no empathy.

gorionine · 25/08/2010 11:37

MaryAnnSingleton, assuming that someone is skinny because they eat nothing/deprive themselves of food is just as bad as assuming someone is fat because they spend their days stuffing themseves with Greggs pasties.

AlwaysbeOpralFruitstome · 25/08/2010 11:39

Urm my mum has type 2 diabetes that is a result of an auto immune disorder caused by steroids she was perscribed 20 years ago, (she is overweight but that is also due to the condition, not being a greedy, lazy arse). I think you need to step off the judgy plinth. Lifestyle is a factor in T2 diabetes but it is certainly not always causal.
