to be disappointed in some posters' nicknames?

There seems to be many nicknames in the style of:

samntomsmumma

mamato2girlies

masonsmummy.

Are people really happy to define themselves like this?

Where is their strong, independent self-image?

There are so many witty, clever or unfathomable names on here - couldn't these posters have taken the lead from them and picked something less needy?

I know this is a parenting website, but I was drawn into here by an image of strong, independent, intelligent posters and I really feel some are letting the side down. It's not some HunnyForum you know.

My posting name is very boring but tbh cant be bothered changing it.

Dont feel like it 'defines' me. Just shows my laziness.

:-)

you eat spiders? Hmm

jelliebellie16 · 22/08/2010 10:30

Can I just ask why some have said they prefer names without numbers?

Am I missing something important here?!

warrickhunt · 22/08/2010 11:36

Mine is a new name today... but not sure if it qualifies as a pun or a spoonerism, or either..

Was never much good at inglish

NormaStanleyFletcher · 22/08/2010 11:56

Jellie - I think that the numbers thing is because
a) you end up with popularname1, popularname2, popularname58 etc. No good for keeping track of who is who
b) If the name has been used before loads of times, why not think of something more unique to you?

jelliebellie16 · 22/08/2010 12:16

Ahh right I see... Obvious now I know.

For the record I wanted a 16 on mine I have no idea if there is a jelliebellie452 :o

I have a weird obsession for even numbers Blush

SkiHorseWonAWean · 22/08/2010 12:26

YANBU - I judge people who place their value upon their uterus.

seenyertoeslately · 22/08/2010 12:29

SkiHorse - your name fascinates me. Is it a pun that I am too dumb to get?

I had to join this forum just to throw in my two cents after hearing from a friend of mine about this.

I'd just like to say, that the very vision of a mother is strength and independence. The ability to nurture and develop others while taking care of yourself is an undertaking that challenges you every day. In fact, I know very few mothers that I would describe as "needy". Selfless would be a more apt title as far as I'm concerned.

I find the fact that you have a negative view of people who are outwardly proud of having "mum" as a title quite odd, since you are on a website called MUMSNET. Shall they change the URL to, "Imanathleteandmechanicandamusicloverohandalsohappentohaveafewkidsaround_somewhere.net"?

Obviously each person here is unique and has talents and abilities well beyond being a good mother. But perhaps if you didn't have such a judge-a-book-by-its-cover attitude, you might actually consider having a conversation with those people to find out more about who they are.

La fin.

Jamieandhismagictorch · 23/08/2010 03:54

welcome craftydame

Monkeytoo · 23/08/2010 04:47

I love the references to 'hunny forums'. I also belong of those forums and laugh everytime it mentioned over here because I've never seen such twee names for threads as on this site. Stuff like 'we're dancing around in the garden because it's May, come and play with us in the hay'. I think each to their own but makes me laugh as it's far more hunnyish than saying hunny I think!

Anyway, off topic..

SkiHorseWonAWean · 23/08/2010 06:03

seenyertoes It's just a nod to my "infertility" and the conception boards. After more sex than you can poke a stick at, I won the game and got my baybee. :)

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies · 23/08/2010 13:05

Have recently name changed due to people finding out who I was in RL, but have now realised that my new name takes bloomin' ages to type into the nickname box Grin.

Currently trying to think of something short, witty, clever, intelligent, strong, cryptic and not involving mums, numbers or literary references...

pigletmania · 23/08/2010 13:31

sorry but do not have time to trawl through 14 pages of posts.

ShatnersBassoon · 23/08/2010 13:46

I insist that the children call me Bassoon instead of mummy, to maintain my strong, independent image. Shatner is the only one that will go along with it.

I only notice the funny or very long names. Nothing else registers, so the mummy type names can't be that bad.

Heracles · 23/08/2010 18:45

I'm glad I didn't go with my real name now.

Yours,

Goofymum · 23/08/2010 21:32

I'm glad the OP apologised. Life is too full of crap sometimes without someone being judgemental about something as effing petty as a forum nickname.

DiscoSquish · 23/08/2010 21:34

I like my name

Minxie1977 · 23/08/2010 21:41

So how do you name change - did mine in a hurry yonks ago and am afraid it sounds a bit pathetic!

Goofymum · 23/08/2010 21:46

I think you just go to your profile page and change it there. But you don't need to change it, it doesn't sound pathetic. It's as good as any on here.
