to be disappointed in some posters' nicknames?

There seems to be many nicknames in the style of:

samntomsmumma

mamato2girlies

masonsmummy.

Are people really happy to define themselves like this?

Where is their strong, independent self-image?

There are so many witty, clever or unfathomable names on here - couldn't these posters have taken the lead from them and picked something less needy?

I know this is a parenting website, but I was drawn into here by an image of strong, independent, intelligent posters and I really feel some are letting the side down. It's not some HunnyForum you know.

But this is 'MUMSNET' .... get it? I come on here to find out about stuff to do with 'being a mum' hence the name!

YABU

Megatron · 21/08/2010 10:02

YABU and weird. You think that a name on an internet forum defines someone? Really? Grin

2kids2dogsandahorse · 21/08/2010 10:02

does cricketthicket mean something then?

gtamom · 21/08/2010 10:03

Yeah, those kinda names suck.Shock

jelliebellie16 · 21/08/2010 14:24

I woould just like to say my fave names are morecrackthanharlem and getorfmoiland

morecrack i actually wanted it as my name when i first joined only a few months ago but it was taken, my DH said it to me once when i was showing a builders bum!!!!

But instead I ended up with a boring one :(

But in answer to the OP, I dont think it defines who you are, people just remember seeing names of posters and recall threads etc. I'll probably change mine when I can think of something more humerous and imaginitive!!

Psammead · 21/08/2010 14:42

There's a poster with the name 'FiveGoMadInDorset' or similar. I just love that name! It reminds me of the famous five. I imagine them going to a rave or something :P

QueuePosition3 · 21/08/2010 14:45

LOADS is more important than bein g amother ffs

these names are shit and a bit common tbh

always presume owner of one is thick

ssd · 21/08/2010 14:46

I think I have got the most boring name on MN!

RonansMummy · 21/08/2010 14:53

"always presume owner of one is thick" !!! ouch!

i'm not going to bore you with my cv, but i'm definitely not thick!

when you join a site called MUMsnet these kind of names just spring to mind! i'll have an "intelligent" name if i join a mensa forum!

RonansMummy · 21/08/2010 14:53

ronansSTRONGINTELLIGENTmummy would that be better?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 21/08/2010 15:07

Queuepsoition3 - Names with numbers in are also looked down on by some.

Disclaimer - I don't judge anyone's posting names. Personal innit.

Psammead · 21/08/2010 15:08

You forgot independent... :P

I sometimes assume that people who can't separate words properly and who don't capitalize or use punctuation are thick. Hey ho.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/08/2010 15:10

Ghoul sorry if this has been mentioned already (thread's too long and I on my phone), but are you a spineless swine with a demented mind?

If you have no idea what I'm on about then you're not and I apologise Grin

Ariesgirl · 21/08/2010 15:11

"What is more important than being a mother?" (someone on the first page)

A couple of things actually. Such as keeping your identity as a person.

Psammead · 21/08/2010 15:12

One could argue that being a mother adds to one's identity rather than overrides it.

PacificDogwood · 21/08/2010 15:20

I had a 'mummy' name when I first joined MN because I just Could Not Believe My Luck that I was actually going to be a mummy. That fact was entirely the ONLY thing I could think about at the time Grin.

Not sure whether that exclusive focus on motherhood at the time was a good thing in my very demanding and responsible job in which I have to be strong and intelligent Hmm...

Current nickname is apropros of gardening catalogue btw Wink.

RonansMummy · 21/08/2010 15:20

What if I was really thick? What relevance would that have anyway? Its all rather snobby tbh.

Psammead · 21/08/2010 15:28

RonansMummy don't worry. I would say that 99.9% of people here wouldn't assume you were thick because you have the word 'mummy' as your username on a website aimed at mothers.

Identities are made up of so many aspects. One of those is the fact that you're a mum. You chose to highlight that aspect here. If people have a problem with that then they are a bit weird, frankly.

BelligerentGhoul · 21/08/2010 15:29

Jenai - I most certainly am. AND it took a tattooed boy from Birkenhead to really, really open my eyes.

Did you know that John Ketley is a weatherman?

:)

QueuePosition3 · 21/08/2010 15:29

maybe Cricket started the thread so they could get a bunfight.
Hmm

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/08/2010 15:38

Grin ghoul thank goodness.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 21/08/2010 15:39

It's hard to think of a nick name. My first try was totally fluffy and sappy. Now I'm not sure if people get the reference...or just think I'm a bit odd.

RonansMummy · 21/08/2010 15:46

thanks psammead :-)

anyway i'm not changing it as I am strong and independent and don't feel the need to succumb to peer pressure, so ner ner ne ner ner :-P
