to be disappointed in some posters' nicknames?

There seems to be many nicknames in the style of:

samntomsmumma

mamato2girlies

masonsmummy.

Are people really happy to define themselves like this?

Where is their strong, independent self-image?

There are so many witty, clever or unfathomable names on here - couldn't these posters have taken the lead from them and picked something less needy?

I know this is a parenting website, but I was drawn into here by an image of strong, independent, intelligent posters and I really feel some are letting the side down. It's not some HunnyForum you know.

FFS.

all the coolest names seem to be gathering here (dont count myself among; still trying to think of something witty and literate) TrillanAstra - love yours - been toying with a douglas adams reference for ages ... svlad cejelli maybe? dunno.
think i secretly would like an internet pseudomym to define some aspirational part of me, but of course it dosent. and anyway this one i chose randomly in a hurry cos i really wanted to reply to a post.

muggglewump · 21/08/2010 15:53

I find adult women who call themselves Mummy, a bit odd.
I mean fine to call yourself that to your small DC, but to other adults?

Do you really introduce your self as X's Mummy?

Bleerggh. I imagine women who do that to wear Disney fleeces.

jonamum · 21/08/2010 15:53

Op..... whatever!!
Cricket thicket????????

LostArt · 21/08/2010 15:53

It's getting harder and harder to post on mumsnet nowadays. You have to be able to spell and type well, use paragraphs and be witty. And now you have to have an approved nickname. There will be initiation ceremonies soon, you mark my words.

imahappycamper · 21/08/2010 15:55

Oh no. It never occurred to me that my name was meant to be meaningful. I'm obviously a lightweight.

muggglewump · 21/08/2010 16:02

I'm not witty, and my spelling/grammar/typing is a bit shit. I just can't stand it when adults call themselves Mummy and Daddy to other adults. It's weird.

RonansMummy · 21/08/2010 16:04

I don't own a fleece, lol. Its all getting a bit personal now so i'm off x

BuntyPenfold · 21/08/2010 16:08

I can't stand the posters who nick their names out of books.

muggglewump · 21/08/2010 16:09

Ah, no RM, it's not personal, it happens in rl too.
You meet someone at the school gates, they introduce themselves as X's Mummy, I say Hi, I'm Z's Mum, trying not to over emphasise the Mum, and the following week they're calling you hun, or sweetie and showing you their new Eeyore jumper.

Psammead · 21/08/2010 16:11
muggglewump · 21/08/2010 16:12

And I didn't say I couldn't stand the people who have those names, just that I think it's a weird thing to do.

ScottishMummy makes me piss myself, I love her posts, just don't go much on the Mummy thing.

Clearly BuntyPenfold, you don't go much on using book characters as nicknames. Fine, I shan't lose sleep over it.

BuntyPenfold · 21/08/2010 16:14

Oh dear poor mugglewump has the hump

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/08/2010 16:21

Grin muggle ur norty x

bonkerz · 21/08/2010 16:22

i joined 5+ years ago and called myself CHILDMINDERSAM for a while! not very original and TBH i didnt really think when i registered, i needed advice and just put down anything! i changed to Bonkerz after a few months of continuous posting and it was actually a few other MN who gave me this name!

RustyBear · 21/08/2010 16:25

I think Bunty is being a bit ironic about the 'names out of books' thing....

Snobear4000 · 21/08/2010 16:36

To be fair, some people just did not have anything going on with their lives until they got up the duff, and then they found a purpose in life when they had kids. So in a way, their children do indeed define them.

Not me though. I have a life.

notagrannyyet · 21/08/2010 16:37

Well I will be changing mine soon, so as not to mislead you allGrin

proudnsad · 21/08/2010 16:53

I absolutely hate my stupid nickname! Made it up in 2 secs when I was squiffy. Was feeling proud and sad about some shit I can't even remember. Awful.

Yabu to attack mummy nicknames but you are not bu to expect amusing and clever names and for that I apologise unresevedly.

jemjabella · 21/08/2010 17:04

My username is a nickname I've had since I was about 13. That means I'm defining myself as a zitty emo teenager with crap hair and odd socks.

I'm comfortable with that Grin

ValiumSingleton · 21/08/2010 17:07

I agree with you but when I've posted incognito I had a name change HoraceAndEunacesMum

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 21/08/2010 17:09

proudnsad, don't apologise for being who you are! Smile

ValiumSingleton · 21/08/2010 17:15

I'm single, and I'm like zen cool about it. hence, valium singleton, oh yes, and i'm old enough to remember valerie

LesbianMummy1 · 21/08/2010 17:35

i never come up with good names but mine suits me now

gothicmama · 21/08/2010 17:41

my strong independent self image is firmly in reality, on MN a parenting site I am as I am, a gothic mama

ethelina · 21/08/2010 18:08

Well mine was made up on the spot for an email address a very long time ago. Its who I am online and I like it that way. I shan't be changing it to suit anyone else.
