to be disappointed in some posters' nicknames?

CricketThicket · 20/08/2010 20:22

There seems to be many nicknames in the style of:

samntomsmumma

mamato2girlies

masonsmummy.

Are people really happy to define themselves like this?

Where is their strong, independent self-image?

There are so many witty, clever or unfathomable names on here - couldn't these posters have taken the lead from them and picked something less needy?

I know this is a parenting website, but I was drawn into here by an image of strong, independent, intelligent posters and I really feel some are letting the side down. It's not some HunnyForum you know.

oh erm yes that too
i need some slepp :o

Vallhala · 20/08/2010 22:50

"Mine's the punchline to one of my Dad's shit jokes.
Had I gone with my favourite shit joke of all time it would have been Dictaphone"

Beer, do you use your Dicataphone... ? :o

sfxmum · 20/08/2010 22:50

as much as I love the wit and charm of many names here, when I first posted I was sleep deprived, a tad shell shocked and sort of lonely so wit or the idea of projecting the right image was well down the scale of priorities
since then I just can't be arsed changing the name and my friends can find me

BelligerentGhoul · 20/08/2010 22:50

:) That Angry face scared me for a while - because I am a cowardly and dependent woman, no doubt. :)

ChippingIn · 20/08/2010 22:59

Frasersmummy :( I was hoping you wouldn't see this thread. Hopefully gobshites like CricketThicket might think twice about being so judgemental next time.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger - don't go changing your name! You are 'one of the ones who went to Trinity's house and helped her out' You are in 'a box' - you'll fuck up my system good & proper with all that name changing nonsense.

DifferentID - wondered where you'd gone to!!

Fanjo - don't you go namechanging either - can't keep up!!

Hassled/Bronze etc - no name changing ok!

RustyBear - that makes sense now!!

Bloody name changing.... shouldn't be allowed!!!

FellatioNelson · 20/08/2010 23:01

I think it depends what stagein life you are at when you come to the board. If you join when PG or with a PFB then you do define yourself by your baby status - it's normal. and as it's primarily a parenting forum it seems appropriate to have a parent/child related name. But after a couple of kids, and a few years down the road you have no need to discuss all things baby and child related, and are ready for a different, more light-hearted or more cerebral identity, to match the discussions you follow. I don't think there is much more to it than that.

MoreCrackThanHarlem - now that's a top name!

AnyFucker - top name - very impressed you've always refused to name change to suit others !

CainInThePunt - Excellent name!! It took me ages to get that as I only really read the first part of names. I hate the word cunt, but for some reason loved this name. Can't remember what you name changed to though :(

StealthPolarBear · 21/08/2010 06:47

I'm going to have another coffee and slap my strong independent self image on

BelleDameSansMerci · 21/08/2010 07:11

Now that, Stealth, is an excellent idea!

Defined by an internet nickname - tchah...

nooka · 21/08/2010 07:12

Do you think that the OP was really expecting everyone to pile in and tell her what a fabulous name she has chosen? Seems a bit of a risky strategy to slag a large number of people off, whilst obviously implying that your own name meets the "witty, clever or unfathomable" criteria and that you are therefore "strong and independent".
I judge posts on their content, if they are interesting I assume the poster is interesting, if a bit fatuous then I assume the OP is a bit fatuous.

Mostly however, with the exception of a few really funny ones, and those people I have crossed swords debated with over the years the names are just background colour.

thumbwitch · 21/08/2010 07:14

No doubt someone has already said this in the middle pages that I didn't read but:
OP, YABU - one of the least 'hunnyish' poster on this forum has to be Scottishmummy - names do not necessarily define the type of poster!

(:( Frasersmummy)

PuppyMonkey · 21/08/2010 07:27

Am I allowed to be a monkey? It's not a mummy. Anyway.

5DollarShake · 21/08/2010 07:41

A 'strong independent woman' conjures up images of Chandler in a towel turban to me.

Where is the OP?

AlCrowley · 21/08/2010 08:13

I had my real name (should have read more posts before registering Blush), then namechanged for the Harry Potter release, then namechanged again when the whole Christian Mumsnet thing happened.

Keep thinking of new names I could use but worry about confusing people and getting troll-hunted if I do.

BTW, Op YABU. I think it's fine for people to define themselves as Mums on Mumsnet! It's our status as Mums or Mums to be that brought us here in the first place after all!!

Islandlady · 21/08/2010 08:32

I was going to use the name I use on other forums.

Which is MADAMVICE

Makes me look like a lady of negotiable virtue

Actually more boring than that as I am vice chair on a comittee and thats what the middle aged male members call me - I actually quite like it.

hairymelons · 21/08/2010 08:52

Playground stuff this, innit?

And bleurgh to describing oneself as a 'strong, independent woman'. We're all different things at different stages in our lives, it's much easier to be strong and independent when you're single and earning. Couple of kids later most of us are slightly frazzled. Roll on the bit someone mentioned earlier where they're not babies any more and you have the head space to chat shit!

sapphireblue · 21/08/2010 08:55

mountainmonkey · 21/08/2010 09:24

Yes YABU. This type of snobby, "we're far superior to other forums, we're intelligent, we're special" attitude is the one thing I hate about Mumsnet.

Psammead · 21/08/2010 09:35

Oooh, I read the OP and feared for this thread. I am so pleased with how it's turned out.

Might name change to Psamumaed just to be contrary :)

Psammead · 21/08/2010 09:37

Oops, I meant Psamumead. See what happens? As soon as 'mum' went into my name I became unintelligent! Maybe the poster does have a point :P

teamcullen · 21/08/2010 09:43

My name defines me as a sparkly vampire loving freak who doesnt live in the real world, waiting for a hansome rich man to wisk me off my feet... What's wrong with that? Grin

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 21/08/2010 09:45

well until a week or so ago I was MathsMadMummy - involving 2 of my favourite things - maths and, funnily enough, being a mummy?!

I changed it just because I felt MMM was a bit boring, but I don't think I'm suddenly more independent and self-identitied just because I don't have 'mummy' in my name Hmm

bottyburpthebarbarian · 21/08/2010 09:47

I have had so many names and incarnations.

Am particularly fond of this one Grin

Wish I had seen this thread last night but was totally hammered

SaorAlba · 21/08/2010 09:52

I have another couple of nicknames that I've used on forums for years, but on MN it's all about anonymity for me so I had to go for something new.
