Football tops are far more common IMO.

izzybiz · 29/07/2010 14:47

Right, have added a pic of Ds in a vest last summer at the splash pool, he does not look common in any way!

AlaskaNebraska · 29/07/2010 14:48

hmm....

"boys with longer middle class hair"

oooh that's the kind of hair I hope my DS will have (he's 11m and it's getting like that already!) - all cute and tousled

no crew cuts here thanks!

izzybiz · 29/07/2010 14:52

Alaska!

Tell me how you dress yoour Lo's please!

brimfull · 29/07/2010 14:53

vests always look like they are ..well vests and should be worn under something

IMoveTheStars · 29/07/2010 14:54

I saw a boy wearing a STRING vest at the weekend.. I shit you not.

AlaskaNebraska · 29/07/2010 14:58

When my son isn't wearing his Eton uniform or his cricket whites I quite often put him in a nice string vest and diamond stud ensemble.

Megancleo · 29/07/2010 15:02

Thanks Takintheplunge, I was starting to worry that i'm so out of touch with UK parenting views..awfully snobby aren't they? Do they bring up their children to judge other dc in vests, due to haircut etc? Can honestly say much more laid back here in Germany (yes really) and my dc can blissfully climb trees, get dirty and not worry if they or other dc are dressed suitably middleclass..yawn!

Morloth · 29/07/2010 15:04

LOL, I bought DS1 the most excellent vest with a giant t-rex on it the other day.

Being common is good, it makes life a whole lot more fun.

Lack of stick up arse makes for easier movement.

mamsnet · 29/07/2010 15:04

Now I feel like not coming near MN for a while..

mayorquimby · 29/07/2010 15:06

I wear them a fair bit mainly because they are a bit chavvy so it's a nice change for a posho like myselgf

5DollarShake · 29/07/2010 15:07

Come on - it's all a bit tongue-in-cheek, isn't it?! Where are people's senses of humour?

Morloth · 29/07/2010 15:07

I get the boy a good chavvy haircut as well, shaved down to a number 2 most of the way around and then a 3 or a 4 on top.

Means I don't have to wash his hair or worry about nits.

ChippingIn · 29/07/2010 15:18

Morloth - was it a vest or a sleeveless t-shirt?? Does he have any design on the short bit

Mamsnet - stop being so sensitive. You live in Spain, all the kids wear vests there! Even if you lived here - so what, it's a bunch of randoms on the internet?? Find a different thread if this ones getting to you!

madhairday · 29/07/2010 15:24

My ds wins the prize

We got this 3 pack of T shirts from Asda and one of them turned out to be a vest top in a lemon colour with a hood . Now unfortunately he saw this before we had a chance to bin it give it away and he loves it - and will only wear it with the hood up. So he's a wee hoodie in a yellow vest top. Nice? I can't possibly squash his personal taste

He does, however, have middle class hair, mainly because I can't be arsed to cut it. So that's Ok then.

BettyTurnip · 29/07/2010 15:26

Fine for my girls - shows off lovely slender non-bingo-winged arms and keeps them cool. Never given boys in vest tops a passing thought, quite frankly.

Firawla · 29/07/2010 16:25

I put my 2 yr boy in them sometimes in hot weather, didn't realise they were hated by so many - not that i would care though, i think he looks nice. He also wears brand name trainers, wtf is the problem with that they last better than cheap ones. and my baby wears them aswel sometimes, which i know some people have a problem with but i think looks nice. I think it makes them look well presented personally, finishes off the outfit..
Some people really have a problem with funny things

Morloth · 29/07/2010 16:27

Its a vest, even slighty stretchy for the full feral look.

I also like the designs in hair, wish I was brave enough to do it to myself and would have no problem allowing it for DS during the holidays.

Morloth · 29/07/2010 16:28

Brand name trainers are a problem as well? LOL, we are Nike shopping next week for tennis shoes.

TheJollyPirate · 29/07/2010 16:38

Nothing wrong with brand name trainers but to claim they "last longer" is a bit of a non-starter as feet grow so quickly it's hard to know.

I don't buy vest tops for my DS primarily because he is very fair skinned and would burn easily. Thankfully he isn't at all bothered by what he wears so I can get away with quite a bit.

Firawla - don't take this thread too seriously love - this is MN at it's most shallow and fun.

I don't like designs in hair mainly cos I live on a crappy council estate and every little wannabe thug appears to have them.

sparkle1977 · 29/07/2010 16:41

I agree, they are common for boys to wear but I think maybe girls can get away with them ?

When shopping with my sister she refers to them as "wife beater" tops!

Morloth · 29/07/2010 16:56

It is a "singlet" in Australian and if you are a tradesman/truck driver it is supposed to be dark blue and preferably a Bonds.

Babies wear white singlets (also preferably Bonds brand), I had my SIL bring me a pile for DS2.

MillyR · 29/07/2010 16:56

I don't understand what any of you mean. Do you mean an actual vest like children wear under their school uniform? I have never seen a child wearing a vest outdoors with nothing on over the top.
