New thread as promised. I’ll pop on later to tag everyone as I wanted to get this link on the old thread before it fills up!

I'm 45. I've been drinking a bottle/bottle and a half a night for as long as I can remember with the odd dry January/ Stoptober along the way - but I...

Evening all! Great to see more people! It's all so familiar...

And thank you @Steppered. I appreciate the welcome back a lot.

I won't lie - I'm pretty glad the 'evidence' has gone with the recycling today. I'm just wondering how long I have to wait before I can start digging into these kids' sweets. 😂(Sugar withdrawal and all that?)

MamaGhina · 31/10/2023 21:31

Next year I’m sending DH. One ended up crying and the other other slipped over in the rain. Ah making memories.

At least they are in bed now and I think I’ll be heading there myself soon as I’ve had enough for one day. Had a cup of tea and a few biscuits.

Happy Halloween all 🎃

Goodnight everyone,
Thanks for the support and camaraderie. Have DDs friends staying......so glad not to be sweating about one of them needing to go home and not being able to bring them due to being over the limit, or worse still thinking I am fine to drive😢

MindfullyAmazedHorse · 01/11/2023 02:20

Hi, just jumping onto this thread as I’m trying to reduce drinking in November. I’m going to try not to drink at home at all this month & minimise it if I go out. It’s good to have a thread to go back to, to keep tabs on whether I’m sticking to it or not.

SpringNotSprung · 01/11/2023 06:32

Now here's a funny thing. I had a measured moderate last night - mainly because DH had drunk a mini bottle of red for the bol, so I opened a big one. I hummed and haaa'd about it but dived in.

I probably had two very scant 125ml glasses. It was a decent red. I woke up at 3am and struggled to go back. I also have a slight headache and my weight has gone up by 1.5lb this morning.

Not sure if the slightly sick feeling is self loathing or two glasses after a long period of abstention - either way it's sh1t. Made worse by the fact that I have a shed load of sh1t to shovel at work, meetings from 11 to 5ish, and that sinking feeling about it.

MamaGhina · 01/11/2023 08:30

Morning @MindfullyAmazedHorsejump straight in! My long term goal was always to stop drinking at home as it’s a bad habit and the amount creeps up. That said, I think I’m realising over time that abstinence is probably the way forward for me, it’s just a hard truth to accept. It’s been 71 days since I joined the first thread and I’ve drank twice, both times out with friends. My current goal is a dry November to get a good run under my belt.

@SpringNotSprung I want to ask how was the red 😆 god I still miss it. In alcohol explained it says there is this 5 hour time limit for sleep, regardless of how much you drink. I’m not sure how universal that applies but I seem to find it’s true. I’ll wake up and then toss and turn after any alcohol. I never seem to sleep well. I’m not sure the weight gain would be that instant how much spaghetti bolognaise did you have… but the sinking feeling probably is. I hope your day doesn’t drag.

Have a good one all!

@MamaGhina not much but I wasn't hungry so should have swerved it completely, and had to battle the munchies. Only just parked up despite leaving at 7.40!!! 11 miles!

TimesaChangeling · 01/11/2023 12:20

I’m sorry but heh at the “how much bolognaise did you eat”! Grin

I think the 3am dip is such a shock when it starts happening to you after a long period of not. And perhaps it is useful to have that reminder of what is happening chemically to cause it to happen? It’s a bit dispiriting that such a small amount can do it though.

oddly enough I am a real white wine person but in my younger days I was a red drinker. And it is red that I am actually tempted by when I think about it. Specially with rain pouring and winds beginning to pick up!

Thepeppapigfanclub · 01/11/2023 17:20

Evening all! I hope you've all had a good day and hope it wasn't as bad as you were expecting @SpringNotSprung. 'How much bolognaise did you eat?' 😂

I've always been a seasonal wine drinker...white in summer, red in winter. I'm not missing it at the minute but that's because I'm still very close to the epic fail. I wish the determination and clarity didn't wear off once I get further in and I start romancing the wine again. They market it so well! Dreading the Christmas adverts starting. They make it look so, so appealing.

I've got a bit of a creative project in the works at the minute and I'm going to do some guerrilla bulb planting this weekend to keep me busy.

How is the self care going for you all?

SpringNotSprung · 01/11/2023 17:38

It's so easy to have just another fork full of Bol isn't it 😀.

Yocal · 01/11/2023 17:40

do some guerrilla bulb planting this weekend to keep me busy.

love this @Thepeppapigfanclub you got to get your thrills in. How else are we going to get dopomine nowadays 😂

Well, my self care. Went for a smear today...that went terrible. Got PTSD haven't I from my birth. Shaking and crying I was. So afterwards I ate my emotions and settled my nerves with a double sausage and egg mcmuffin meal followed by a fish and chip lunch. An absolute mess of a self care day! My partner after telling him of my ordeal has gone out and bought me baked goods. He too said it was the worse day of his life that birth, so I think he chomped down two blondies as well.

I did get my rail delivered for my new season capsule wardrobe. Well done to the delivery driver on slaying my goals for me today 😂.

Today was a mess, but tomorrow is another day and I've managed not to drink alcohol in the face of this adversity.

Thepeppapigfanclub · 01/11/2023 17:51

Wow @Yocal - that sound horrendous. Well done for not drinking and I'm so sorry about the PTSD and traumatic birth. Getting the smear done despite this is self care though? At least now you can focus on things that are much more fun?

Yocal · 01/11/2023 18:15

I will take that, yes it is still a self care act, despite re-living the trauma. I should probably get some therapy for it, because it's clearly trauma trapped in my body as I'm shaking even now.

Hopefully, I will have a good sleep tonight and be ready to start over tomorrow with some fruit and veg!

MinecraftRose · 01/11/2023 19:33

Can I please join? I have been drinking far too much and had a bit of a wake up call today. If I don't stop it will kill me and I have children.

I can't drink in moderation, if I try to have 1 I end up having another and another!

BoilingHotand50something · 01/11/2023 19:53

Welcome @MinecraftRose you have found your people! Have you got any specific plans to tackle it? I did a hypnotherapy session to kick me off but since then, I have found that this thread and the TryDry app has kept me going (59 days).

MamaGhina · 01/11/2023 20:33

Evening all. I feel like I’m getting ill. Had a bit of a headache most of today and this evening my sinuses feel sore. Might need some painkillers and an early night. It would explain my lack of patience last night.

Welcome @MinecraftRose, as mentioned you are in good company. Moderation is tough and sometimes it’s just easier to take the option off the table. We can recommend some good quit lit if you are game!

@Yocal that sounds like a tough day, hope you’ve had a more settled evening.

MissSmith80 · 01/11/2023 21:01

Good evening everyone and welcome @MinecraftRose. As always, thank you for your entertaining and insightful posts.

I'm staying with family this week and although I drink less here than when at home (we share 2 bottles between 3), there is an 'expectation' of drinking. Very pleasantly surprised when it was just accepted that I am not currently drinking. Although the response was, ' you will be drinking at Christmas won't you?' Didn't feel able to say no so just said we will see how I feel.
Christmas does feel a long way away and yet I've decided to do 100 dry days as my next goal which takes me way into the New Year - one day at a time.

Awayinthewindow · 01/11/2023 21:20

Glad you're back @Thepeppapigfanclub

Limeandsoda2023 · 01/11/2023 21:44

Evening everyone. Sorry to hear you’re feeling unwell @MamaGhina , hope an early night helps.

Interesting to read @SpringNotSprung about the alcohol disturbed sleep even after just 2 small glasses. That’s been a real change for me not drinking - I always woke up at 4am and struggled to get back to sleep but now I either sleep through or wake to go to the loo and get back to sleep really quickly.

welcome @MinecraftRose. I also like the TryDry app mentioned by @BoilingHotand50something - there’s something really satisfying about looking at a chunk of dry days on the calendar.

SpringNotSprung · 01/11/2023 21:52

@Yocal Flowers. I empathise! Do get some therapeutic help. The flashbacks interrupted my sleep for years and years.

Cloudsclouds6 · 01/11/2023 21:52

Just checking in! Keep up the hard work everyone👍 @MamaGhina hope you feel better in the morning 🤞

SpringNotSprung · 01/11/2023 22:22

Off topic but is anyone else listening to lashing rain and wondering if they will easily be able to get to work tomorrow. Storm Ciara seems to be doing her best here.

Thepeppapigfanclub · 02/11/2023 00:02

Hi @SpringNotSprung. Yes - I've been trying to sleep for an hour and a half but getting nowhere. Dreading to see how bad it is in the morning. Might have to swim to work if it carries on like this...

Tellmeliestellmesweetlittlelies · 02/11/2023 00:04

Hi all hoping to join you all. Drinking has been a problem for too long for me now. I recently had 3 weeks and felt great, slept better, looked better, more motivated BUT then I drank and we all know how that goes. Have read through all the previous thread and this feels like somewhere supportive and non judgemental which I need, God knows I judge myself enough.

Thepeppapigfanclub · 02/11/2023 00:38

@Tellmeliestellmesweetlittlelies welcome! As you will have seen - no judgement here at all. Don't judge yourself either...look how many of us are here. And 3 weeks is a great beginning. Come along!
