So after so many attempts of failing, I'm really hoping to succeed this time. Is anyone on day 1. I go through other posts nd read how well people are doing, but just can't seem to get past the first few days. The house is hectic nd I feel like by 5 o clock, I deserve to be opening a bottle of wine. I know I shouldn't nd would be feel so much better the next day if I can stop drinking. Just can't seem to crack it. Any tips on audio books that really worked? Other ideas? I think I've tried so many times I need to do something different. I know the first few weeks are going to b tough, any vitamins etc to give a boost. Any advice ? Help !!!

Me! I'm pressing the reset button.. I was over 45 days AF and then had a f'it moment 😔 I absolutely cannot touch a drop. I have no off button!! Life is so much clearer wine free so I don't know why I do it to myself. I'm purchasing William Porters book and refocusing my mindset from today.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 10/04/2022 11:23

Claire Pooley Sober Diaries, really really good.
She goes through a whole year after she quit, and explains how alcohol affects our brains and the costs.
She explains how post alcohol life is, the ups and downs. I recommend it.
Also a very different book is Dry by Augusten Burroughs, which has moments of laugh out loud humour. He is an American writer so it is a totally different point of view but I liked it so much I bought a copy and re read it.

enoughisenough100 · 10/04/2022 11:23

@wakeupandshakeup well done on 45 days though, that's amazing. Don't beat yourself up because of a blip , it just gave u a reminder that you are missing nothing nd feel so much better AF. Best of luck. Hope we can both do this !!

Day one for me today. I am drinking way too much - at least a bottle of wine a day on a weekday - start with a glass whilst cooking at about 6pm, and then always finish the bottle. At the weekends I often start drinking at midday when cooking lunch.....and then drink all day! I am sick of feeling constantly hungover and I know that I must be doing some damage.....
I think that I need to go AF as I don't seem to be able to just have one!

wakeupandshakeup · 11/04/2022 09:57

Got through last night and didn't get much sleep..! This is normal in the Betsy I'm sticking with it. I've woken with a sore throat and earache.. woohoo! Day one ✅

Easterbunny22 · 11/04/2022 10:22

Day one totally AF. I've cut down loads and mainly drink AF drinks. Weekend I had some wine and then ended up going out until 2am .Cant remember getting home , now anxious and filling my head with loads of stupid scenarios that I know havent happened.
So decided I wont drink at all as I really do not want to feel this way again
I was drinking two bottles of wine a night and literally went to nothing ,so hoping I can do this all the time.
I am the same as you op cant just have one,end up going mad .
Sending you lots of support x

Swarskid2184 · 11/04/2022 10:37

Easterbunny22 - I managed AF for 21 days last year, but then first day I try to have just one glass.....back to a bottle a day.

I have also found out that I need surgery in the next month, and am really worried that I need to be AF before the general anesthetic

Easterbunny22 · 11/04/2022 10:44

@Swarskid2184 I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather not drink again than feel this way. Like you I have one then need to drink more and more.Hopefully your surgery will motivate you x
I'm still ill today, its horrendous.

enoughisenough100 · 11/04/2022 11:26

Ya I just can't have one, I would love to be able to do that but it never happens, I've tried so many times so AF is def the way i have to do it! Need to find a nice AF drink though!

I like the Fevertree flavoured tonics as an AF option.....(although recently have been adding gin...)

Rupertpenrysmistress · 11/04/2022 16:34

Hi all. You are not alone there are so many of us on these alcohol threads. I was also drinking wine every night at 4/5 pm, earlier at the weekends with the odd blowout.
I was so miserable, overweight, short tempered and unhealthy.

I am now over 90 days sober. I highly recommend Craig Beck any or all of his books, he just gets it. Craig also recommends some vitamins which I followed. If you can't afford them all at least make sure you take vitamin B as that is usually low in drinkers.

The benefits, amazing sleep ( took 3 weeks) weight loss, bloated belly and face gone, increase in energy, reduced anxiety, improved mood, temper and tolerance. Waking up without that awful anxiety, guilt and hangover is priceless. I now cannot imagine going back to drinking, I just look after myself and most of all I am kind to myself. I finally like myself. Good luck.

SmellyWellyWoo · 11/04/2022 17:31

Yes me. I don't always drink that often but when I do, I have no off switch. Messed up Sat night on a night out and I'm too old to be acting like a teenager! Time to reset. I can't guarantee I can moderate so it's easier to just stop completely.

Thank you for these recommendations. I loved a previous book by Augusten Burroughs so will definitely read this one.
thelastgreatdynasty · 11/04/2022 17:48

I definitely need to cut down. It's habit for me. It gets to late afternoon and I get bored. I generally start early and finish early, so I don't get hangovers, however, it's the calories that are bothering me!!

wakeupandshakeup · 11/04/2022 18:45

Checking in on day 2..! Who's with me

enoughisenough100 · 11/04/2022 23:10

@wakeupandshakeup totally with you but finding it tough, I've done tonite, but I'm hoping I'll keep going! Feel like I'm missing out, I feel so relaxed after a couple of glasses . I need to find something new to distract myself!! Change a bad habit !!

I'm actually day 3 now. Keep going everyone!

VanLife · 12/04/2022 07:31

I'm back to day 4 after a blip Friday night, 21days before that. I was feeling so much better, more energy, better skin, less anxious. The blip on Friday really reminded me how crap alcohol makes me feel, inside and out. I'm really sticking with it this time!

Good luck everyone 🌷

Haggisfish3 · 12/04/2022 07:33

I’m day four too! Feeling good. We can do this. And if not, we can try again.

FireWorks81 · 12/04/2022 07:38

My friend really connected with this book ‘the unexpected joy of being sober’. Sending you all strength FlowersFlowers

wakeupandshakeup · 12/04/2022 10:47

One day at a time OP.. find an alternative tipple, I'm on the cold M&S lemonade ☺️ a nice refreshing alternative. Also get a quit lit book and sink into it.

VanLife · 12/04/2022 14:19

Herbal teas are my new best friend in the evenings.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 12/04/2022 20:14

It really is such a hard thing to do and you guys are all trying so hard. My advice is, to treat yourself to whatever you want at the moment, sweets/choc/cake and use that to look forward to. Also second reading/listening to quit lit. Keep the momentum going. I know it all sounds a bit blah compared to a nice glass of wine. You will get there and it will get easier. This is what has got me to over 3 months so far.

Be kind to yourself and take 1 hour at a time. Don't put pressure or deadlines on yourself. If you do slip, learn from it and go again.
Here is to hoping tomorrow is a bit easier.

DemoralisedNow · 12/04/2022 20:32

Checking in! Day 1 again here. Had a few stints of sobriety but really want this to be my last reset. Spoke to my AA sponsor and going to work harder at recovery as I let things slide and ended up drinking. Feels shit but I know that a happy sober life is possible! We can do it!
