I'll start. I work in research. Lone parent. Rent. Minimal savings (think under 1k). I'm an 'emergent service worker' - never heard of this before!

Traditional Working Class. Funny... I see myself as extremely poor middle class!!

MyCrumpetIsCold · 11/11/2022 12:11

Precariat

This is the poorest and most deprived class group. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Tend to mix socially with people like themselves
Come from a working class background
Rent their home - over 80%

I knew this already 🤷‍♀️

needthiswilderness · 11/11/2022 12:12

Elite, which is accurate in relative terms, but not a word I’m comfortable with as has value connotations.

Ventimiglia · 11/11/2022 12:12

How do you calculate the value of your pension?

SeasonFinale · 11/11/2022 12:12

emmathedilemma · 11/11/2022 11:56

Elite which is not where I would have put myself! I wasn't sure if to include my pension pot in the savings amount but it wouldn't change it.
Must listen to more hiphop ;)

I listen to hip hop but not opera and classical and still registered as elite

LeMoo · 11/11/2022 12:13

Elite - a surprise. I'd put myself at established middle class (minus the income) but apparently my interests and wide ranging acquaintances give me some extra cachet.

Am hoping with some years of hard work, I can up in this group economically - we all need something to aspire to!

Isseywith3witchycats · 11/11/2022 12:13

Established middle class haha brought up on a midlands council estate OH brought up working class he is the one whos put us in this class due to studying and working in a niche field since he left school and being older we are now in the kids left home mortgage free category

Andanotherginplease · 11/11/2022 12:14

I'm established middle class but I think that's to do with my good pension. I wouldn't class myself as middle class at all. Apparently I went to uni and I like a range of cultural activities - errrr No.

LindaEllen · 11/11/2022 12:14

New affluent worker. I'd suggest that's accurate for me, to be honest.

pastafairyan · 11/11/2022 12:15

Yeah I find this accurate. We rent from housing association. I'm self-employed but consider myself a stay at home parent as that's what takes precedence. Husband is emerging into his career. I'm not young but he is. Grew up extremely working class, did office work for 20ish years and much more blue collar work than that too. Degree educated but opted out of my higher ed degree to prioritise family. I like culture, especially local, and I've always absolutely loved classical music. I also listen to hip hop but that was only one piece away in their little chart.

Emergent service workers
This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:
Are young
Enjoy a cultured social life
Rent their home - almost 90%

Taxtherich · 11/11/2022 12:15

Ha! I’m elite because I like museums and opera and have friends with good jobs :0

GoldenCupidon · 11/11/2022 12:15

Did it twice and came out once as Established Middle Class, once as Technical Middle Class - the only difference was how many of the "people I socialise with" I ticked (everyone I would chat with in the pub/send a Christmas card to v the people I see regularly one to one).

I don't think talking with a farmer or a postman would make me more "established" than hanging out with a scientist etc. Maybe it's to do with where the testmakers think I live.

Waitingfordecember · 11/11/2022 12:17

Established middle class. I would classify myself as working class though.

Cuddlywuddlies · 11/11/2022 12:17

Established middle class

CourtneeLuv · 11/11/2022 12:17

Established middle class

This is the most gregarious and the second wealthiest of all the class groups. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Enjoy a diverse range of cultural activities

Went to university

Are comfortably off, secure and established

Well that's that's a load of bollocks.

Established middle class

Percentage of population 25%
Average age46

This is the most gregarious and the second wealthiest of all the class groups:

People in this group enjoy a diverse range of cultural activities

They socialise with a broad range of people

Many work in management or the traditional professions

Most come from middle class backgrounds

They often live outside urban areas

But this is quite, not completely, accurate.

LegsLikeParsnips · 11/11/2022 12:18

Cannot believe I bothered with this guff. There aren’t enough brackets to make it worth while - house value max option is over £500k which for most of the south east means a very ordinary 3 bed terrace. Max income option is over £100k per household- again, this is a very healthy income but for 2 full time working parents in the south east it will cover a very nice lifestyle (bills & mortgage paid, no struggle for food costs, clubs for kids, holidays) but certainly not elite which is what it comes out as.

ImPickleRickSpartacus · 11/11/2022 12:18

Taxtherich · 11/11/2022 12:15

Ha! I’m elite because I like museums and opera and have friends with good jobs :0

You don't own your own house or have savings?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 11/11/2022 12:18

Huh well apparently I have no cultural capital cos I don't do any cultural activities- let's rename that mum of toddlers :-/

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 11/11/2022 12:19

I am not in the UK and not part of your class system, but I took the test for fun and according to this test I am an "emergent service worker", too.

I wonder how the algorithm works.

MichaelFabricantWig · 11/11/2022 12:19

Elite apparently

I did go to an elite university but not a private school.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 11/11/2022 12:20

Established middle class but in reality I think we’re more lower middle class.

murasaki · 11/11/2022 12:21

Technical.middle class, but I didn't put my pension in the savings bit. And suspect knowing a lot of scientists may have swayed it.

Haventhadaneggsinceeaster · 11/11/2022 12:21

Elite which is laughable!!

BamBamBilla · 11/11/2022 12:22

Emergent service workers - aka poor but culturally rich.

LadyDanburysHat · 11/11/2022 12:22

Technical middle class, but was a new affluent worker a few years ago. I am definitely a mix of the two.
