I'll start. I work in research. Lone parent. Rent. Minimal savings (think under 1k). I'm an 'emergent service worker' - never heard of this before!

Even in London, none of that is "standard"! Having all of those things would put you in the top few percent of people, maybe top 1%.

You're obviously very out of touch with what the median income/savings etc are, even in London.

Wouldn't you need a lot of money to own anything in London? I only know someone with a mortgage on a one bed flat in zone 4. Others are in house shares.

It does take a lot of money to buy a house in London, yes.

Most londoners do not have £100k+ savings though.

And the median household income after council tax in London is something like £37k, last time I looked. A household income after tax of >£100k isn't "standard" anywhere in the country.

blackheartsgirl · 11/11/2022 15:50

Emergent service worker 🤷‍♀️

I expect people are counting things like S&S ISA funds, employer stock options, SIPP funds, etc. as savings. It isn’t liquid cash savings sitting in a bank account available to whip out for whatever strikes their fancy.

I know what people will be counting; I know that most savings aren't kept as ready cash! And it's still not normal to have >£100k (with the possible exception of pensions).

And the median household income is significantly below £100k even in London.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/11/2022 16:30

The survey this is based on was done over 10 years ago. I think both the savings and house values would have to go up to be more representive these days.

GibbsGibbsGibbs · 11/11/2022 16:39

Elite - with a household income of 50-100k and renting. 🤔

WhatNapkin · 11/11/2022 16:43

Elite

We do have over 100k savings and that doesn’t include our pension pots, we earn under 100k between us and own outright. House value is about 350k but that’s because we live in a cheap area. Down South in Surrey where DH is from it would be worth a million.

I am from a very poor background but educated my way out of it, perfect example of social mobility.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 11/11/2022 16:47

Technical middle class. Am a bit put out as I’d consider myself established middle class.

mnchat · 11/11/2022 16:50

Supposedly I'm the elite but given I'm in London so would say the survey needs tweaking!

Grew up (in london) in council housing to a single mum. Attended state school then went to a Russell group before becoming a chartered accountant.

I'm in my 30s so At best I'd call myself lower middle but in actuality I'd say working class raising middle class DC

TheChosenTwo · 11/11/2022 16:51

Established middle class.
Actually quite pissy about this but then I think all these things are a load of bollocks really!
i didn’t even pass college 😂

Ringbling85 · 11/11/2022 16:54

I played around and it considers me established middle class but when I say I don’t socialize with a farm worker suddenly I’m elite. My neighbours are farmers so i can’t help that I socialize with them! It’s all bills hit imo…

BeyondMyWits · 11/11/2022 17:01

Traditional working class 🤣🤣🤣

Zipps · 11/11/2022 17:06

Established middle class

Well well 😄

XenoBitch · 11/11/2022 17:09

Precariat - the poorest and most deprived.

ShiningStarQueen · 11/11/2022 17:12

Established Middle Class

#RunsAndHides 😆😆

Rinatinabina · 11/11/2022 17:13

Elite, I have my doubts about that don’t feel very elite.

Suzi888 · 11/11/2022 17:17

Elite- live in Wales and have good jobs between us. Only local authority jobs nothing fancy whatsoever. DH’s hobby means we know people who are scientists, lecturers and artists as they share the same hobby.

threegoodthings · 11/11/2022 18:12

TomTraubertsBlues · 11/11/2022 14:30

So why did you say that someone who socialises with shop assistants and postmen, and listens to rap, is "uncultured".

You used that description, not me.

I was taking the piss out of it. If you play with the parameters to get elite, at the end it talks about enjoying "high cultural activities" such as museums and listening to classical music. So there is an implication that some of the activities are less cultural than others. I didn't design this tool and you misunderstood my post.

HeathenPlayingHouse · 11/11/2022 11:59

New affluent worker, that's a new one to me.

Forgot to add my pension, so now I'm Technical Middle Class- I'll take it 😂

Itstarts · 11/11/2022 19:18

I'm supposedly elite. I disagree.

Elphame · 11/11/2022 19:32

Elite here which is probably inaccurate

Glittertwins · 11/11/2022 19:33

I didn't put museums or classical music but still laughing about my result

Rainbowcat99 · 11/11/2022 19:51

New affluent worker.
I don't feel very affluent at the moment but apart from that I think it's quite reasonable.

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2022 08:11

Established middle class, which is what I would have said if asked. Not that many questions though, and I'm surprised education level wasn't asked, and the 'who you know socially' was very limited - most of my friends' professions wasn't in there. But for me the outcome was correct!
