I wonder if the people calling for what is essentially World War III would be so enthusiastic if it were their loved ones who would be sent to deal with it…

Nobody wants war. Nobody. But military action has enabled many nations to retain their sovereignty and freedom. That is something that can't be threatened because of fear of consequences when the consequences for some people on a daily basis are so grave

This incident will not lead to the Kremlin concluding that they can get a way with a nuclear strike. For Gods sake. Please try to exercise some rationality.

I am surprised by your post. Russia very carefully tested the West's commitment to Ukraine, a fellow European country, by axing Crimea without any retribution, which turned out to be a staging post for a full invasion.

This 'accident' has all the hallmarks of being a similar strategic policy, of testing Nato to see if there is a response.

Russia have indeed threatened for some time, many months that a nuclear strike on Ukraine with targeted weapons was a possibility. Do you imagine they were just bluffing or lying? Based on what evidence?

We can not assume this was an accident
We can not assume that Russia intended to hit Poland
In the same way we can not assume Nato will do nothing

The facts are Poland has been hit - two people have died.

World wars started over much smaller infractions. You are mistaken if you can not see the risk now.

ItsRainingCatsAndDogsAgain · 15/11/2022 20:33

Seriously.

Fuck. Russian bomb has hit Poland.
NoMichaelNo · 15/11/2022 20:33

It was accidental, the Russians are incompetent.

WhenisitmyturntobePM · 15/11/2022 20:33

Honestly I think this is probably a case of cock up rather than conspiracy. It will be in everyone’s interest to de-escalate. NATO will make a bit of a show and then use it as leverage to bring Russia to the negotiating table, hopefully.

Otherwise we’re doubly fucked.

MissEstherDaniel · 15/11/2022 20:34

Talking head on sky saying it's likely Putin trolling G20.

oakleaffy · 15/11/2022 20:34

Venetiaparties · 15/11/2022 20:23

The issue is: if Nato do nothing and sweep the 'accident' under the rug - Russia reads thats as Nato unable/reluctant to get involved. Hence the probable use of chemical or targeted nuclear weapons against Ukraine which would be much more 'doable' with confidence if they feel Nato are squeamish about involvement.

Nato moves in and stands by the article of declaration. WW3 is on the cards, and Russia can signal it was just a stray but by then it might be too late. Russia are completely ruined economically, militarily, they have run out of road and roubles. Putin can not bear to lose. Remember the caged bear analogy.

Nato fudges with Article 4 and hopes to god Russia stops there (It won't, surely we know that now)

At this moment the back channels of communication could not be more important, but in my view it is almost too late. This is more serious than anything we have seen in the world in several decades, and I am pretty sure most world leaders are not buying that it was just two stray missiles.....

No wonder your daughter is to frightened to leave the house with this level of paranoia flying about.
It’s almost as if you wish for WW3.
Take a deep breath.

Greenshake · 15/11/2022 20:35

@Venetiaparties you can be as surprised as you like, but looking at your comments on this post so far I am not too worried about your viewpoint.

What on earth are you talking about? I think you have me mixed up with another posters. My dd is an adult and is out as we speak!! 😂

Trees6 · 15/11/2022 20:37

The Russian military is undertrained and poorly managed with tons of old equipment. This was an error. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before.

It’s devastating for the families and close friends of the two deceased Poles and I can’t imagine how they’re feeling right now, but this is not Putin attacking Poland. It’s a mistake.

Yes but this is the tinder box to end all tinder boxes.

They are having to be SO careful, so non-reactive, so considered and it’s tied western hands to help Ukraine because nobody is prepared to put a match to it all.

But cool heads are all over it and Ukraine are doing brilliantly. We just need more of the same.

We know that already. You're missing the bigger point here.

HairyToity · 15/11/2022 20:38

My prediction is that Nato will increase their defences of the border, and assistance to Ukraine. In a fortnight there will be a minimum 20,000 NATO troops in Poland.

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 20:39

It's fascinating to observe the level of innocence here.

Listen. Even if you block your ears, it's still going to happen.

This is Putin's war book. I could write it at this fucking point as he is THAT predictable. It's like watching a child aged 2, trying not to steal some chocolate cake!

This is what Putin does! He blames it on an accident or outright denies it. And then he goes full scale for the jugular. Lol

Someone with a similar name and equally panicky was posting about their frightened daughter

But my advice to take a deep breath still stands.
Negotiations are far more likely than breathless hysteria.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2022 20:40

Liebig · 15/11/2022 20:27

No one is going nuclear on this. But NATO has to address it.

Can you put that in bold for the previous wallies who demanded the threat title be changed?

File under 'worrying' rather than invoking the spirit of Lance Corporal Jones screaming 'don't panic!'

No I hope it will be subtler than that. Although I’m sure some Polish politicians will need vigorous briefing and encouragement by diplomats and NATO people.

PaidthepiperTuneismine · 15/11/2022 20:40

He has done this denial, over and over and over again. He knows that we receive media that he broadcasts. So he knows that we will wonder.......... who to believe.....

oneofthegrayfolk · 15/11/2022 20:41

Paperdolly · 15/11/2022 19:13

Looks like it was a stupid mistake but May now allow NATO to act.

I think NATO need to step in now too. Being scared of Russia has allowed them to escalate to starting war in Europe again by invading a sovereign country ( Ukraine). The strategy of ‘let’s let Russia get away with shit to stop escalation’ clearly hasn’t and isn’t working. NATO need to realise that now.

Venetiaparties · 15/11/2022 20:41

Greenshake · 15/11/2022 20:35

I am not especially interested in your view point greenshake Playing down the risk is beyond ridiculous given how dangerous it is to have a rogue state that has nuclear weapons with a dictator that is terminally ill, and is now showing all the signs of a serious break down in rationality and is immersed in paranoia ~ we are now in the end game of war and Putin has nothing left to lose.

If you feel it is all hand, and there is nothing to worry about I might question your reasons to do so, and indeed your motivation for posting on this thread as you are.

Clearly Russia is a threat, and after this I would argue that the threat has increased, you can say there is nothing to see here folks, I beg to differ.

Not sure what you're trying to suggest here. In what way will he go full scale for the jugular now?

EngTech · 15/11/2022 20:42

Cooler heads will make the right decision on what response is made

Educated guess is that China will have a quiet word with Putin about this as even China does not want buckets of sunshine being thrown about

vera99 · 15/11/2022 20:42

Since Ukraine have quite a lot of S300s and they are anti-cruise missile missiles along with other uses and a limited range <300km and the fact the Pentagon is holding fire with condemnation makes me suspect it's a Ukrainian accident and they are working on how to frame the response.

The US official leaking to the AP says it was definitely a Russian missile BUT the Polish official leaking to the Washington Post doesn't say one way or another whether the missile or missiles that allegedly hit Poland were fired by Russia…

Could well be wrong but if we can't speculate on an internet forum in the absence of evidence where can we?

MetellaInHortoEst · 15/11/2022 20:42

And all of this will have been anticipated and examined from all sides. We have fifty years of Cold War de-escalation experience underlying all the diplomacy and strategy.

Nobody should be panicking.
