What are your opinions on a guest sleeping naked in someone else's house?

I'm talking here about a male, late 60s to early 70s, who always sleeps naked and this includes when being a guest in someone's home.
Also, would you be comfortable letting you DC visit and sleep in the same house with this man (he is granny's husband)?

I sleep naked wherever I sleep- in my house, as a guest in other houses, in hotels etc. I don’t understand what the issue is? I obviously don’t walk around other peoples houses naked!

My mum sleeps naked when she’s staying at our house and I feel a bit weird about it OP. I would just assume it’s the done thing to wear something in bed when a guest in someone’s house, but reading this thread I can see maybe I’m the weird one!
I would have felt extremely uncomfortable if my step dad slept naked in my house or while my kids were staying with them, but I never caught wind of what he wore in bed so a moot point!

Unless you’re in the room with her what difference does it make?

Skdkhvyvrhej · 27/10/2026 21:11

I don’t understand people who wear pajamas to bed.

You must let your privates breathe!

In my own house I do go to bathroom naked in the night. I once scared the life out of my own teenager as he came upstairs just as I came out of bathroom 😂. But it’s just a naked body, and as I pointed out to him it’s the one that grew him!

Mumsnet can be weird about nudity though (I did grow up in a European country that has a different attitude to nudity, and bodies are just bodies)

Italiangreyhound · 27/10/2026 21:13

I would not be conformable if he were going to the loo in the buff.

Friendlygingercat · 27/10/2026 21:21

I normally sleep naked but sometimes stay with a relative. I take a kaftan like garment to sleep in in case I have to get up to go to the loo. It also doubles as loungewear.

There’s some history from my childhood with her poor boundaries around nudity so it’s probably a throw back that if I’m completely honest.

I would always sleep in bed clothes at someone else’s house, even if I don’t tend to in my own. It just feels like the right thing to do to me. Not sure where that comes from, but it’s somewhat ingrained for whatever reason!

Sorry, are you saying you've never heard of nightwear/pyjamas etc?!

Where do you live?!

Of course I’ve heard of pyjamas, they’re those things you keep in a drawer in case you have to go into hospital! I couldn’t wear anything to sleep in, it’s far too hot and uncomfortable.

What are poor boundaries around nudity? She’s family, your mother! My mum was naked around us and I don’t cover up around my children. I don’t purposely seek them out, but I’m on my own house, and it’s just a naked body!

Like is said where I grew up it was totally normal to see naked adults (and children in swimming pool changing rooms, saunas etc)

Frenzi · 27/10/2026 21:26

What a weird post!

I always sleep naked. I cannot sleep in any sort of clothing (apart from knickers and socks!!!!) as I feel as though I am getting wrapped up.

If I am staying at a hotel or someone else' house I always take pj's. If we get changed to watch tv before bedtime I put the pj's on - I do not sit around naked watching tv (I also do this at home). When I go to bed I take them off (unless I am sharing a room with someone other than my DH and then I would keep them on). If I get up to go the toilet I will put my pj's on.

If we have breakfast in night clothes I put my pj's on - I do not droop my naked boobs into my cereal.

Why do you think that someone that doesnt wear pj's at night would tromp around your house naked!

So? They’re in their own room I take it and not parading round!

some people can’t sleep with clothes on.

I suppose it's the walking around naked outside the room that bothers me. Like going to the toilet without covering up

Edited

Well that is mental and he wouldn’t be welcome to stay any longer.

There is an update from OP - also, she wouldn’t even know he sleeps naked if he didn’t parade around, would she?!

Yeah, that’s not okay. Tell him to use a dressing gown.

How else would she know if he didn’t “tromp around” naked?!

She said he leaves the room naked so that’s the real issue.

That’s quite different to sleeping in bed naked.

The next post may be about him going round Tescos naked😂

She doesn’t say he has done this, just that she’s worried about walking around naked.

As long as he ain’t coming down the stairs with his skin like wrinkly old bananas, coming down the stairs lacking any pyjamas - I don’t see the problem.

This should have been in your OP. I wouldn't even sleep there with that going on. Or if there was a risk of it happening.

Italiangreyhound · 27/10/2026 21:40

I know families are all different, and culturally things are different in some parts of the world.

But personally I would find it inappropriate to have naked parents, grandparents or children walking around.

When I was a young teen my mother would think nothing of coming into my room when my friends were round without a stitch of clothing on. Wouldn’t knock when walking into the bathroom where my friends were showering (we didn’t have a lock on our bathroom door growing up) and didn’t see a problem as ‘we are all girls together’. It was excruciatingly embarrassing for my friends and for me. That’s what I consider having poor boundaries around nudity.

That is gross.

I remember coming out of our bathroom once after a shower, to go to bedroom to get dressed, and one of my son's friends was on the landing. I didn't act all coy, that would have made it worse, just walked past, but was very much more careful after that. However that was unintentional.

I'd have never walked about naked knowing people were around and didn't enter son's bedroom, or the bathroom, without knocking once he stopped being very little.

saraclara · 27/10/2026 22:00

I sleep naked. But when my DGDs sleep over, I wear a nightie, because one or both always end up in my bed in the morning.

Surely it's no drama for someone to tell him that the children are likely to wander in, so can he wear some boxer shorts?
