Continuation of the AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling thread for discussion about the government advice to stockpile for an imminent emergency and what the heck that emergency might actually be.

Spoiler: it's more of a perfect storm of lots of factors coming together to potentially form one great clusterfuck from economic woes, global energy shortages (mainly diesel), potential food shortages, war and madmen to crazy weather patterns rather than a clear identifiable singular thread.
This is a practical thread and a bit of a handhold thread to make sense of events and how they may affect you. This is not an end of the world thread.

Remember an emergency can range from a temporary unexpected event to a much longer crisis but the underlying principles generally stay the same.

This is the official government information and advice, if you want further details on what the actual recommendations are:
https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

ROUGH STATUS REPORT (as of 9am 22nd Oct - please note this isn't fully comprehensive, and is moving FAST)
Civil Unrest reported in:
France, Italy, Greece, Belgium, Albania, Indonesia - multi reasons, but largely due to economic pressures and the cost of living
Spain has had problems but these have temporarily stopped, probably due to significant weather related issues due to the Dana effect
More protests planned for this coming weekend
High Alert in the Middle East:
Netanyahu now committed to regime change in Iran, as he believes they are developing a nuke.
The US has pulled all Embassy Staff from Saudi Arabia and is hoping no one notices that they've ordered personal and families across the Gulf home and then seem to have lied that they have.
The Emir of Qatar has stated at their equivalent of the annual King's Speech at the Opening of Parliament that war was coming and to prepare for the worst scenarios. US pulling planes out of Qatar.
The Egyptian PM has warned the country of severe crisis ahead - given the nature of the country this is related to their alliance with Saudi Arabia and their reliance on the Suez Canal which the Yemeni rebels now control access to and their exposure to famine
Iran is saying if there is another attack, the gloves are off and they'll try and wipe out the middle east oil industry as they go down, as well as hitting critical civilian infrastructure.
Much movement / noise is similar to run up to the first US attacks this year. Debate over whether the attack will come before the Israeli Election or the US Midterms - possibly within 72hours - latest mood music suggests potentially this weekend. Seems to be shifting to a when not if.
Israel election: 27th Oct
Prices and Shortages:
Diesel needs no real reminder - we need it for haulage, mass transportation and farming, we are screwed without it. Fuel Emergency declarations in West Virgina, Kentucky, Michigan, Maryland, Arizona, Nebraska and Texas - typically allowing limited dyed diesel use for ag or commercial vehicles. Illinois and Missouri have also allowed by not under emergency orders. Less reported is the fertiliser shortage and knock on effect, poor yields this year and the effect of El Nino on next years, sulphur export bans and the blockade on Ukrainian and Russian wheat exports which are particularly crucial in feeding North Africa and the Middle East. This is liable to have significant impact on the UK with 6% rises in food already expected next year (and there's every reason to believe this will be higher especially with civil unrest all over the place). Reports of aviation fuel running low in some parts of Europe with emergency supplies (which can't last forever) being used.
El Nino:
See above about farming and also think of disasters - like the ones Spain is facing with flooding. Storm Austin is incoming and there is a weather warning for the South of England with power outages and flooding possible today/tomorrow.
The Internet:
PHP is 70% of the internet. Its got compromised so it can pretty much all be hacked. This is VERY BAD (in capital letters). Many websites offline whilst this is sorted including multiple government ones around the world.
Just AI generally - everything from putting everyone out of work to just hacking and killing us all. No Biggie.
Trump and the Mid Terms:
Trump is firmly losing his marbles. He's defected to Russia, can't stop rambling about men's arses, is waving at non-existent people, his team are known to be considering ways to impose martial law, he's getting heckled at Trump rallies by his own supporters, 83% of all voters think the biggest problem in the US now isn't the cost of living crisis but government corruption. He's being called a traitor by some of his fellow Reds. Mid Terms look a disaster and Trump probably won't accept them. He's reversing bills that Congress passed weeks ago by executive order.
Mid-Terms: 3rd Nov
Ukraine and Russia:
Ukraine facing massive problems still cos Elon has got the ump. Starlink isn't working at face enough speeds. They've bombed a shedload of Data Centres in Russia. This has killed off the Russian Internet and many Trump/Musk supporters in the process (one way or another) which screws up Twitter (and its value) for them. Ukraine is getting blamed for diesel shortages cos they refuse to stop hitting Russian refineries even though it has no choice now its been cut off by the US. Zelenskyy now says Trump isn't an ally. Trump wants Zelensky gone and thinks Putin is being reasonable and Ukraine doesn't want peace. Germany states it would have activated Art5 if the confirmed Russian sabotage attack on Liepzig had been successful.
Russia is apparently planning to step up its sabotage campaign in Europe after having successfully sunk a few boats in EU waters (Romania / Bulgaria - these sinkings have been in both international waters off the coast AND within their official territorial waters).
Economy:
Lots of debt. Much concern over the implications of this particularly with regards to AI and state debt in the US, UK, France and Japan (but not restricted to). Much money put into gold by China. Background of this bad given the approach of potentially multiple crisis.
France Moody's credit review: Due tomorrow 23rd Oct - expected to be not good especially in the current political climate in France
UK Budget: 28th October

They are all interconnected and one or many could tip us into abject chaos. Or not. The risks here are sky high. Of what? Take your pick.

Word of caution on the priority register. Dh is on it as he needs a cpap. Storm Arwen took out our electricity cables. Very nice chap came that day, looked at them and went "ooh that's a big job".

That was the last we heard from Northern Powergrid until they came out 8 days later to fix the line. I spend hours trying to get through to them to find out what was going on. The telephony system recognised we were priority customers but I would still be waiting 2 hours to speak to someone and then get cut off. One time I did get through, it was to someone in London who had been allocated as an overflow handler but she couldn't help at all as she'd been given no info or escalation route.

Luckily we had the money to send dh to a hotel, but they even argued about our expenses for that until I made a formal complaint. It wasn't a fancy hotel!

After that experience I bought a Jackery solar generator for dh's cpap. Its been used a couple of times since then. I would never trust the priority register to deliver in anything more than a local small scale event.

Very basic.

Here is ours if anyone is interested. But it’s not new and it’s not the first one either.

rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/31523.pdf

I've always thought Scandinavian societies are so much more grown -up than ours.
You only have to compare that with ours for it to be very apparent.
I think our government should be more truthful and pussy foot less, then maybe more people would pay attention.
I have to say though that as a terrified teenager in the worst of the Cold War nuclear proliferation, I would probably still die of fright if I heard sirens going off!

FindingMeno · 22/10/2026 17:22

One thing I have learnt however from the new government advice is that where I thought floods aren't really something that would happen in my local area, we actually have a medium flood risk.
So it is worth looking at!

I think as a country we are used to the government constantly holding our hands and telling us it’s all ok. It will all be ok. Someone will fix it.

The safety net isn’t a big or far reaching as people think it is. It’s oh well they will send in the army with food if whatever happens and it will all be fine and yay free food.

A very big lack of personal responsibility or planning of any sorts.

A family member is going to France next month I mentioned the current issues. Not where I’m going so not fused. 🙄 As if these things can’t spread out. Are they going to check the news for updates? No I don’t like reading the news it’s boring. Anyway did you see about Harry and Meghan 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

I try to lead the horse to water but it blows air out its nose to make bubbles rather than drinking 😅

Checked my flood risk. Low low low low low low. Not near a reservoir no risk from ground water.

Charging powerbanks ready for the storm.
Not in one of the likely worse affected areas but no point having this stuff if its not ready just in case.

Yip same. Topping up the charge on my battery kettle as we speak. Checked powerbank last night and it was at 97% still from a month ago when I charged it initially. Must be everything on charge tonight - laptop, phone, kindle.

Have ordered food from Tesco for tomorrow. For the first time ever my entire shop disappeared out of it's basket as i was trying to check-out. Usually if you go out and back in it reappears or if you hit the back key. Nope, totally gone. Had to redo the whole bloody thing. Wondered if it was anything to do with the online problems just now. (Internet was also not working this morning although it seemed to recover fairly quickly).

Thank you for the continuation of the threads. On the back of @RedToothBrush comments at end of last one I did one extra shop and included some items for other family members. I am particularly concerned for the pregnant one and bought calpol and other baby bits because I remember the panic in 2020 when parents couldn't get milk/calpol. And plenty of water.

Lots of tinned soup too.

I'm tempted to take notes from this thread in case mumsnet goes down. I've downloaded the thread too. Does anyone know what can happen to downloaded books on kindle? Under what circumstances would they 'disappear'?

Jeez I hope my kindle books are safe. If the internet goes down they will be literally all I have to read. My understanding was the downloaded ones should be safe but you won't be able to download new ones. I could be wrong though.

Very glad to have a few paperbacks lying about now (propping up a piece of furniture which is how they have survived all the clearouts)

DH has a couple of kayaks and if we can make it as far as the scout hut in the floods we can grab the canoe there and start rescuing people.

I'll skip the ark, it must have stank with all those animals on it.

Feeling rather smug right now about my massive TBR pile on my bookshelves - I'll be alright for a few weeks at least.

I remember when it looked like lockdown was coming in Finland during covid times and I went to the library and got out a great big stack of books to keep me going Grin

Wes's War List makes top headline on BBC News Online.

Not Israel about to bomb the shit out of Iran. Not Saudi getting flattened.

Wes's list for Brits. When this has been about the third time the government has started to push this item. This time the nudging is getting quite in your face and increasingly unavoidable.

Next stop, online ads in your feeds and social media.

There's increasing nerves isn't there - and this is too late for the incoming Storm Austen so I really bloody wish they'd stop pretending their biggest concern here is extreme weather. (As much as we still need prep for extreme weather).

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting speaking with a pink background behind him

Streeting: UK should be ready for emergencies and hostile acts

The defence secretary warned the public and businesses needed to think about how they would cope with natural disasters and cyber attacks.

I have the Tobias Ellwood book on my Kindle
I should probably read it.

Will get a bit of cash out at some point.

Food stash starting to be ok. Need some crackers and cereal bars.

Not really up to date on the news at the moment unless it is on here.

Dental checkups for all the family are up to date.

Have been a lurker on the previous threads but read fairly religiously. Saying hello and thank you (and marking my place).

Holeymoley28 · 22/10/2026 18:24

We have loads of books. I have a bad habit of buying books and then not getting round to reading them.

Also a family member left me their entire Enid blyton collection which fills a whole bookcase stashed away in my loft.

I don’t like reading on kindles it just doesn’t feel right.

Millions of colouring in books and arts and crafts as well plus more Lego than a Lego shop. Plus the dreaded monopoly’s. Have a few murder mysteries we haven’t done yet either.

We shall not get bored for a while.

Maybe I need some doom to actually
get all these read and built.

Ryan Orhan

the cybersecurity situation is deteriorating at a pace that’s getting genuinely difficult to comprehend.

> microsoft: ai-powered attackers targeting hundreds of organizations, sometimes reaching privileged cloud access in under 3 hours.

> crowdstrike: four separate threat actors using autonomous agents. one already compromised 15+ healthcare organizations.

> autonomous ai agents: reportedly used to compromise 100+ corporate websites, including sites associated with John Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins.

> major us banks: JPMorgan, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley are dealing with third-party ai agents accessing customer accounts. some apparently attempting actions beyond user instructions.

> php2shell: millions of exploitation attempts against critical php vulnerabilities. governments issuing urgent warnings, with some organizations taking systems offline.

> litellm: backdoored release shipped through its official distribution pipeline, stealing credentials and enabling remote code execution.

> railway: possible exposure of decrypted customer secrets.

> zeabur: breached AGAIN, now shutting down entirely.

> emudhra: serious certificate-security concerns involving infrastructure used to establish trust in websites and software.

> openai: two of its own coding agents reportedly interfered with internal security monitoring during coding tasks.

> gitlab and node.js: major vulnerabilities requiring urgent patches.

and this is all happening while frontier models are getting substantially better at finding vulnerabilities and carrying out complex computer tasks.

cybersecurity is having an absolutely catastrophic week and i don’t think we’re prepared for how quickly this could escalate.

I slightly disagree with the ability to prepare given how sloppy so many companies DH has worked for. It's always been about cutting corners and doing things quickly or on the cheap rather than properly. DH has been fighting this mentality from managers who can't code for years, warning how this leaves them vulnerable all over the place.

As was said at the end of the other thread it's more of a miracle that we have got so far without much more problems.

None of this particularly surprises me and DH has one and only response: a very dry and sarcastic LOL as he's warned about far too many chickens in the past and now they are roosting.

At some point I think money will start to go missing from bank accounts. And it will create panic.

Fwiw, he feels that some of the newer banks are actually a better bet than some of the older ones because they have less legacy infrastructure and much newer systems which havent been patched to fuck.
