You know, your lovers got no money, but he’s got his trombolees.
For me, it’s clearly a big musical instrument from the brass section. My son is convinced it’s a swishy cloak. This argument is coming to define our weekend.

I'm with you too op. Weirdly though not really like a trombone but really big more like a sousaphone.

At a push maybe some kind of trampoline. But definitely not a cloak.

Exactly this!

A trombolee is not the instrument itself, but rather the name given to people who play the instrument.

Like if you play the piano you're a pianist, but if you play the trombone you're a trombolee.

So you'd have Dave and the Trombolees.

Distant cousins of the Jumblies.

I think that must be it😄
he's got no money but he's got his little gang of trombone players!

I'm suffering from Aggro- phobia

Stop the thread, I have found my musical-pun twin

Tromboleese jas always been a kind-of gigantic Toblerone. Who would want a lover with no money but a fancy brass instrument when they could have a poor lover with an impressive chocolate stash?

I will accept this definition if its just one trombone player that follows him around and does sound effects like Peet Montzingo

A female trombone.

Pleasesaynothing · 18/10/2026 13:17

This and also the image I invented in my head of the dark mysterious shamen that michael jackson yammered on about who he had to confess to when he " told the baddiquachi" in black or white ?

AmyDudley · 18/10/2026 13:19

One of these surely.
Because anyone who owns one of these is a keeper.

Excellentsausages · 18/10/2026 13:20

I always heard it as 'my lord has got no money, he's got his tongue released'. 😆

Funnywonder · 18/10/2026 13:21

It is strombolees, which is very obviously a number of folded pizzas that he’s keeping for himself, the greedy bastard.

TonTonMacoute · 18/10/2026 13:22

No it's a reinforced briefcase, strong valise.

hagchic · 18/10/2026 13:22

You're all wrong. You've actually misheard trombolees - it's actually thromboleis, which are multiple small thromboses in the private area

That's why he's got no money. He's struggling with his health. She's very considerate of this.

It's also why they are both 'freed from desire' - it's just not happening.

Daftypants · 18/10/2026 13:23

lol my kids used to sing “ my love has got no money , he’s got a trampoline “
I did say to them that the words were “ strong beliefs “ but we all decided that your love having a trampoline was much more fun 😆

DinoLil · 18/10/2026 13:23

I agree with a large brass instrument!
But thanks @OrangeFlower14 for solving that age old question!

Wasn't she that rock singer from the 70s?. American, wore a lot of leather?

Oh dear no, a common mix up, but you’re actually thinking of an English singer who came to prominence in the late seventies post punk era, she was the vocalist and main lyricist of a successful rock band that liked to sing about Chinese takeaways, very much popularising their local, Hong Kong Garden, in Chislehurst.

Malta —> Maltese
Congo —> Congolese
Trombo —> Trombolese

An instrument like a trombone, a mini one maybe. TBH there are so many song lyrics that don’t make sense, even when you know what they are, I didn’t give it too much thought.

During lockdown there was a long running thread on MN with a ‘guess the lyrics’ game and that made me realise just how many lyrics I’d been singing wrongly over the years. I’ll blame it on the poor quality of my music equipment in days gone by.

CurlewKate · 18/10/2026 11:03

I’m very old. I still remember a friend asking what “Don’t give up on a spaceship” meant. I remind her of it occasionally.

🤣 not heard that one before !

You know as well as everyone else that you have miss quoted the lyrics.
