What exactly is a trombolees to you?

You know, your lovers got no money, but he’s got his trombolees.
For me, it’s clearly a big musical instrument from the brass section. My son is convinced it’s a swishy cloak. This argument is coming to define our weekend.

A fancy trombone

Poshjock · 18/10/2026 10:56

He's got no money - Isn't it obvious he got his trombone on lease?

ScarlettOYara · 18/10/2026 10:50

It's a misheard lyric from a song.
It should be "he's got his strong beliefs".

Don’t be ridiculous! We’ve had some really sensible and thought-provoking theories on the thread and now you’ve spoilt it with this wacky interpretation. 🙄

Love this!

A bit like those sea monkey things you used to get?

Yes, exactly. I think they might have magic powers that are able to grant freedom and love to those who care for them.

bearbeatcheesesticks · 18/10/2026 10:57

A rental agreement for a brass instrument.

Yes, I realised my error and made a far more logical response, please see upthread!

Love it

Another vote for large brass instrument. Has to be carried over the shoulder. Very cumbersome

ScarlettOYara · 18/10/2026 10:54

Sorry! I retract that 🙏🏼
I really meant to say that it's a small car component which creates that scratching sound when you quite justifiably go up on the kerb.
Apologies 💐

Apology accepted, you may continue. 😂

HesGotHisTrombolise · 18/10/2026 10:58

Definitely a big brass instrument!

thatAgneswhocallsherselfPerditax · 18/10/2026 10:59

Definitely some kind of brass instrument.

I think the “strong beliefs” meaning must have filtered through, though, as I imagined the guy as an unsuccessful, impoverished busker who was nonetheless determined to make it as a musician…

Thank you. My blood sugars are low, but that's no excuse.

There’s strict rules about this .The law dates back to about 1652 relating to proper carrying of the trombolees so as not to wake the devil.

Anyone not complying was burnt as a witch. They had to listen to the trombolees being played as they burnt. You can still hear the echos.

Livpool · 18/10/2026 10:30

Completely agree with you OP - a brass instrument, larger than a trombone.

I'd have said it's smaller rather than larger. I think the 'bolees' part makes it sound more dinky. 🤷‍♀️

The other option is that he has a houseful of little people who are related to the tombliboos from In the Night Garden, which adds a whole new spin to it! 🤣

They're so cute. I want one.

I’m very old. I still remember a friend asking what “Don’t give up on a spaceship” meant. I remind her of it occasionally.

Dont listen to their singing. They stand outside your window at night playing the trombolees, eyes glowing, don’t be lured in!

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 18/10/2026 11:04

It's a type of unicycle, with a trombone-like horn instead of the more traditional bell. I thought everyone knew that!

I think my latest replies have taken a dark turn.

I must be one of the few who never misheard this lyric as “tromboleese”, it’s fairly obvious the words are “strong beliefs”.

I was obsessed with this song when it came out and didn’t actually know that for over a decade when a friend told me.

Geronimode · 18/10/2026 11:07

I also imagined a brass instrument but did ruminate on trampets from PE

Ah, David Soul, memory unlocked!

I’m old too.

missmodular2 · 18/10/2026 11:07

It's a bit like legalese - you know, jargon that trombone players speak among themselves to keep the rest of he brass section on their toes
