What exactly is a trombolees to you?

You know, your lovers got no money, but he’s got his trombolees.
For me, it’s clearly a big musical instrument from the brass section. My son is convinced it’s a swishy cloak. This argument is coming to define our weekend.

Definitely some kind of trombone crossed with a tambourine. Also, her incense is purified. It was the 90's, incense sticks were popular, it made sense.

Now I feel old because I had to Google the lyrics and I’ve never heard of this song!

TheoreticallyAdult · 18/10/2026 11:10

You’re all wildly wrong you know.

It’s a type of extravagantly fantastical hat that one wears on very specific special occasions. Even if one had no money or fame.

Its this

I love this!

But what is the object next to the big drum? Is it a Cornish pasty? What is its purpose?

Yes, yes I know it’s strong beliefs - but that’s boring. It’s far better to imagine the penniless lover wielding his silly brass instrument while the woman wails the words to the song.

With you all the way op

Incense never left my house. My DC come home and they say ‘what’s that smell’?

The smell of the 90s, children. The smell of the 90s.

Thing is though, if he sells it she might not fancy him anymore. He’d be rich, but have no trombolees.

He sounds like a potential cocklodger to me. Red flags all over the place.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 18/10/2026 11:13

As a kid I always thought it was about a man who had nothing but his girlfriend who happened to be called Trombolees, and that Trombolees herself was singing about the situation.

I’m very old. I still remember a friend asking what “Don’t give up on a spaceship” meant. I remind her of it occasionally.

I always thought part of that was 'Don't give up on a signpost' - it's 'Don't give up on us, I know.

I think Grin.

Piglet89 · 18/10/2026 11:14

I thought it was Stromboli and it is some kind of percussion.

PDAblues · 18/10/2026 11:14

Musical instrument

Makingsenseofitall · 18/10/2026 11:14

This thread needs to go into classics

omghereistrouble · 18/10/2026 11:15

I always heard it as drum release. So I imagined someone taking their frustrations out on a big drum kit.

Tromboleese sounds like a small trombone for beginners.

Its this

You win today's internet. That is fantastic!

Yikes101 · 18/10/2026 11:18

Definitely a brass instrument, a cross between a trombone and a bassoon.

HappiestSleeping · 18/10/2026 11:19

Livpool · 18/10/2026 10:30

Completely agree with you OP - a brass instrument, larger than a trombone.

Very similar to a Flumpet. With Pootle playing it.

Deadringer · 18/10/2026 11:19

I think its a sort of hat, that can play a tune when you blow into it. A bit like the one the tin man wore in Wizard of Oz, but brass coloured. I can imagine lots of situations where that would be handy, maybe even life saving.

What exactly is a trombolees to you?
Negroany · 18/10/2026 11:20

I thought it was a cross between a trombone and tambourine.

Or a vegetable like a tomatillo.

AffableApple · 18/10/2026 11:22

It's another red flag in this song against this cocklodger, is what it is. It's a security blanket or rag he chews on. He sometimes calls it "Blanky". Cancel the cheque and leave this man.

Calliopespa · 18/10/2026 11:24

Stromboli - a type of pizza. He's got his strombolis🍕🍕🍕

bestcatlife · 18/10/2026 11:25

Musical instrument of course. He may have no money but he can use his Tromboleese for busking

I bet your house smells amazing. They were so much better than the smell of glade plug ins 🤣 I loved those shops with all the dream catchers, incense sticks and floaty dresses
