To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

Steak! No idea why, I just don’t like it.

My BIL went to massive effort to get the very best quality meat one Christmas - thankfully I knew in advance and told him not to waste it on me.

Agree . Steak is revolting!
Sushi🤢

SleepyWhippetMum · 17/10/2026 19:16

Pistachio and biscoff

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 17/10/2026 19:18

Salmon, and especially in its slimiest incarnation as gravadlax.

I thought the Swedes were pulling my leg when they tried to get me to eat slices of slimy, raw salmon, but they were all tucking in with gusto, and making appreciative noises.

At least when they bring out the fermented herrings nobody gets offended if you turn green and leave the table.

Petrine · 17/10/2026 19:20

Sourdough bread. Good for toast but nothing else.

RampantIvy · 17/10/2026 19:20

Roast potatoes.

Give me mashed potatoes any time.

So shoot me.

Additup · 17/10/2026 19:21

Macdonalds, although 'food' is doing some heavy lifting. It's just so unpleasant like reconstituted left overs shaped to look foodish.

Roast potatoes, I can't stand them.

😱

Matcha - it tastes so bad that it has to be drowned with sugars, and syrups, and anything else, but you can’t escape it at the moment.

Biscoff. They are the cheap shit biscuits you get at ring-road hotel conferences, not a whole flavour on their own.

Brioche buns for burgers. They are breakfast at a push.

Panettone. It’s not cake.

Hallelujah common sense at last. I can never eat a burger in a pub because I don't want it in a brioche bun. I don't want a savoury burger in sweet bread. This is the same reason I won't eat carrot cake or salted caramel. I don't want sweet and savoury mixed.

Hmm, I've read the exam question twice and this isn't just dislikes otherwise I would rattle on about coffee and bananas for hours... it's stuff that is overrated. So 'fancy/gimmicky' stuff surely? Not staple stuff.

In which case I offer you... sun-dried tomatoes. Why would I want to eat a mummified tomato that has given up on life because someone left it the bottom of their gym bag in 1997? I bloody love fresh tomatoes - these bastardised foul, oily scabs bring chewy mouth misery to any meal or cheeseboard they go near.

And if sun-dried tomatoes are a staple for you, I truly hope you get the help you need. I'll donate to your GoFundMe if needs be.

Over rated to me means something that gets undeserved praise. Could be anything.
I’d include bananas!

Wjdbxb · 17/10/2026 19:32

I agree with a good few of these, especially Greggs sausage rolls 🤢 so bland! How have they ever achieved cult status? Those of you from North Yorkshire will know that a sausage roll from Thomas the Bakers is far superior.

also agree with sourdough. It’s so tough.

and I love salted pistachios but think they’re horrible in anything else, especially sweet things.

pumpkin spice lattes. Disgustingly sweet and taste like a church candle.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/10/2026 19:32

Coffee, alcohol, smoked salmon, oranges (also satsumas, clementines and anything else in that family), burgers. Most takeaways.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/10/2026 19:34

Yes to Greggs sausage rolls and actually almost all sausage rolls. The only ones that take the flavour profile beyond oil and salt are the ones you have to pay silly prices for at artisan markets.

katzrooldogzdrool · 17/10/2026 19:42

Brussels sprouts, whether at Christmas or any other time of year.

Woah, woah, woah! Leave satsumas out of this!

ItalianChips · 17/10/2026 19:46

Steak, I hate it also lamb.

NerWay · 17/10/2026 19:47

DC3 had just got back from eating out and reminded me of another one. Truffle fries, they taste off to me.

Waitingfordoggo · 17/10/2026 19:48

I’m sorry @Wjdbxb 😕 I know they’re popular and I want to like them but all things orangey are horrible to me (except orange flavoured sweets, obviously, which are great).

I can see what you mean, but I do veer towards thinking it's more about faddy.

Glad you agree about bananas - most people look at me when I say I don't like them, like I've grown another head or something!

Anabolicanna · 17/10/2026 19:50

Pizza and pasta.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 17/10/2026 19:51

Hash browns - greasy potato, no thank you.
charcuterie - not for me.
Bubble tea - I want my tea hot with milk, English breakfast is perfectly adequate. Not some fruity concoction with soggy rice crispies floating in it.

JulietteRoche · 17/10/2026 19:51

Weeellokthen · 17/10/2026 18:46

I never go to Italian restaurants because it's cheap as chips to make but they charge a fortune 😂

That's only true of mid market ones like Jamie's Italian. That said, it isn't my favourite cuisine by a long way.

Funnywonder · 17/10/2026 19:53

Risotto. I don’t care how good it tastes, the wet texture makes me feel sick.

Cupcakes. They are pretty to look at but the buttercream to sponge ratio is way off, making them really sickening. Give me a fairy cake with icing and sprinkles any day of the week.

Woofy12 · 17/10/2026 19:55

Chocolate ice cream
Avocado
Tuna
Mashed potato
Cucumber
Seafood
Sushi
Spicy food

BCBird · 17/10/2026 19:55

Scallops, prawns, chicken, avocado, sushi, chips, rice, pasta, chocolate cake and icecream

Itsallpoison · 17/10/2026 20:01

Oysters.

Described to me by a posh friend as ‘like swallowing fish-flavoured bogeys’. I eventually got the chance to try one and he was absolutely right.

Caviar, on the other hand …

I came here to say this! Oysters are THE most overrated food no contest.
Champagne is the most overrated drink.
Both are disgusting— but maybe because they are expensive people pretend they like them to be sophisticated.
