To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

Greggs. I don't understand the massive popularity - very greasy sausage rolls and pasties. I miss Ainsley's, they were proper.

Sushi - it looks so pretty but it's just a bit weird. Claggy rice, raw seafood or pointless little bits of cucumber and avocado. The pickled ginger is the good bit.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 17/10/2026 17:27

Lobster, give me a nice fresh crab.

SnowflakesandSlippers · 17/10/2026 17:29

I agree on panettone, also caviar, I have no idea what someone is supposed to like about it or why it is considered a luxury. Also marshmallows, dd loves them but I find them very nothing-y and they certainly don't improve a hot chocolate.

WrinklesShminkles · 17/10/2026 17:29

Sourdough bread. Tough as old boots and horrible sour taste. Give me a proper baker's yeasted loaf any day.

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 17/10/2026 17:31

Potatoes and pasta.

I don't see the point. Just a bland vehicle for better food. I wouldn't waste calories on them.

whatisforteamum · 17/10/2026 17:31

Sourdough

patooties · 17/10/2026 17:32

‘Pulled’ anything, salted caramel, pasta also, sushi, matcha, everything is ‘maple’ now - just fuck off.

AlwaysPurple · 17/10/2026 17:32

Avocado

OneSnugBear · 17/10/2026 17:33

Avocado....revolting.

thebrowncatisback · 17/10/2026 17:33

Tea

Hohofortherobbers · 17/10/2026 17:34

Caviar, its really really fishy!
Eel, its even fishier 🤮

HikingHippo · 17/10/2026 17:35

Potentially niche, but tempeh. Tastes like damp, musty laundry 🤢 (or at least what I'd imagine damp, musty laundry to taste like!)

Minasama · 17/10/2026 17:36

I love virtually all food but am not a big fan of caviar.

Also things like salted caramel, chilli chocolate etc, why take a good thing and spoil it?

I don’t like things that have been messed about with. Traditional food is traditional for a reason and not usually improved by modern tinkering.

Notimeforaname · 17/10/2026 17:37

Rice
Sushi
Wraps
Bagels
Salad dressing
Desserts of any kind.

Potatoes in most forms

Sourdough bread (I once had a fairly pricey sourdough sandwich from a nice bakers, full of seafood in a Marie Rose sauce but as soon as you tried to bite it the bread squashed all the filling out the other side and it was a total mess to try and eat).

Brioche buns for burgers (they just fall apart and you end up in a mess)

Beans/chickpeas/lentils. I absolutely hate the texture of them the most but they always have a sort of chalky taste to me too. I was once told if I didn’t like chickpeas or hummus normally, I would change my mind if I had crispy roasted ones. Nope, still awful.

Trifle. All those different textures together is absolutely horrifying to me and I can think of many other desserts that taste much nicer.

MargaretThursday · 17/10/2026 17:41

Mashed potato and brown bread.

MerelyPlaying · 17/10/2026 17:41

Oysters.

Described to me by a posh friend as ‘like swallowing fish-flavoured bogeys’. I eventually got the chance to try one and he was absolutely right.

Caviar, on the other hand …

Matcha - it tastes so bad that it has to be drowned with sugars, and syrups, and anything else, but you can’t escape it at the moment.

Biscoff. They are the cheap shit biscuits you get at ring-road hotel conferences, not a whole flavour on their own.

Brioche buns for burgers. They are breakfast at a push.

Panettone. It’s not cake.

I used to live in Japan and did tea ceremony, the matcha was nice in that context as a couple of mouthfuls along with traditional Japanese sweets.
I am truly horrified at the idea of a matcha latte.

BillieWiper · 17/10/2026 17:41

That fancy hand carved Spanish ham. Pata negra I think they call it?
To me it's chewy, greasy and way too salty. And too thickly cut.

I'm not overly fussed by oysters. They're alright but I don't really think of them as food? Like you couldn't fill up on them?

Also a lot of steak is too chewy for me. Even Hawksmoor sometimes I don't enjoy. It's also really heavy and feels like I can't digest it easily!

Never understood the appeal of risotto. It just seems like savoury rice pudding? Which to me is awful.

Autumnishere1 · 17/10/2026 17:41

Turkey for Christmas

LostMyTrainOfThought · 17/10/2026 17:41

I agree with pasta, I just don't enjoy it. Please don't hate me but I dont like an english breakfast! I like the individual components but all together its too much.

Minasama · 17/10/2026 17:42

Imicola · 17/10/2026 17:17

Agree on matcha, it is grim.

Anything with 'dirty' in the name.

"Bakes" which consist of overly sweet pre made UPF confectionary/biscuits mixed into cheap chocolate or some other stuff to bind it into a slab of sugary hell.

Yes! The word “dirty” immediately puts me off the food! I would never order it as could not fancy it!

Totally with you on greggs. Their sausage rolls are awful.

Sushi I think can be nice. But often isn't just because it's not fresh and not professional authentic recipe/construction.

Historyinme · 17/10/2026 17:50

Pasta, panettone, caviar, and eggy bread used to be poor people's food.
I love pasta, my mum used to make fresh pasta and gnocchi and slow-cooked ragu.
We used to have eggy bread or pate for breakfast as kids in the 80s in Dalmacija.
I'm not keen on sushi.
Love everything that's home-grown.
Don't understand why people like fast food like McDonald's, Greggs so gross. Not keen on fake food.

HoraceCope · 17/10/2026 17:51

Tofu - needs marinating and burning frankly!
king prawns - no thank you
cheesy chips, no thank you
greggs
