To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

Loaded fries, I just wanna eat my chips without having to get through a layer of revolting yellow cheese and bits of rancid bacon

JulietteRoche · 17/10/2026 18:42

Potatoes. Tiramisu. Bananas (bleugh!) Most ice cream. Chicken Tikka Masala.

SabrinaThwaite · 17/10/2026 18:44

Prosecco - no thanks, I’ll have a Cava instead though.

Panettone - it’s neither bread nor cake.

Lobster - usually smothered in butter to make it even less appetising.

OrneryWorld · 17/10/2026 18:44

Greggs sausage rolls

Lampzade · 17/10/2026 18:45

Pizza - I cannot stand it

Weeellokthen · 17/10/2026 18:46

I never go to Italian restaurants because it's cheap as chips to make but they charge a fortune 😂

DrFoxtrot · 17/10/2026 18:47

Risotto! It might taste heavenly but every mouthful is the same and I’ve lost interest after a very short time.

Agree with pizza, just not nice!

Bourbon biscuits are the devils biscuits, utterly vile.

@Svanam

if you haven’t had decent pasta then it’s either how you cook it or where you go / your recipes because whilst much pasta is so so, it can be absolutely delicious, same as every other meal.

I don’t actually think any specific food is overrated, just poorly cooked so often. What I do not buy are ready meals, they are pretty terrible, and unless I’m away and it’s all there is, I avoid generic type pub meals as they are likely to be ready meals, if I have to eat in one I stick to burgers or steak which whilst mediocre are likely to be ok to fill me up.

I scratch cook at home and a lot of dishes people describe as so so are very tasty when properly prepared

I don’t cook pasta because I hate it so im talking about everywhere ive ever tried it. I don’t cook it at home, you do realise some people just don’t like certain food however it’s cooked?

Sliced bread, it’s the worst thing since bread,
Eggs, the taste, the smell, the texture all make me want to vomit,
Chinese Takeaway, people are always so shocked when I say I don’t like it,
Ketchup, it tastes awful and ruins anything it comes into contact with,
Seafood, fruits de mer? More like Insectes de la mer,
Chicken nuggets, the ones where the chicken is kind of mushed like McDonalds,
Ham from a packet. Supermarkets sell so many types of ham. All of them taste the same and are wet and stinky,
Not food but all those big, sweet drinks with cream on that coffee shops sell. I’ve only ever had one that wasn’t disappointing.

devildeepbluesea · 17/10/2026 18:51

Avocado, especially “smashed” avocado. Christ that’s grim.
Tea

I’ll eat pretty much anything else, and am currently demolishing a baked Camembert with sourdough toast. Lush.

Really surprised at how many people dislike sushi. A plate of sashimi and soy sauce is heaven. Last time I had surgery that's what DH brought to hospital for me to eat.

And also avocado? You can nail your daily fibre requirements with a slice of rye bread and thick mashed avocado. Delicious!

I forgot about sushi and avocado, they can both get in the bin.
Avocado makes my mouth itch and sushi is pretty to look at but just isn’t nice to eat. Cold rice-no, cold fish-no. I’m sure the only reason people like it is the soy sauce as that’s the only palatable part!

Arlanymor · 17/10/2026 18:54

Hmm, I've read the exam question twice and this isn't just dislikes otherwise I would rattle on about coffee and bananas for hours... it's stuff that is overrated. So 'fancy/gimmicky' stuff surely? Not staple stuff.

In which case I offer you... sun-dried tomatoes. Why would I want to eat a mummified tomato that has given up on life because someone left it the bottom of their gym bag in 1997? I bloody love fresh tomatoes - these bastardised foul, oily scabs bring chewy mouth misery to any meal or cheeseboard they go near.

And if sun-dried tomatoes are a staple for you, I truly hope you get the help you need. I'll donate to your GoFundMe if needs be.

HorseandHeron · 17/10/2026 18:56

salted caramel
hobnobs
any food where sugar and salt compete with each other

I quite like sourdough but agree it is nothing special. DH pays a fortune for it.

Oat milk.

Pulled pork especially if smothered with fake 'smoky' BBQ sauce

ZYXW987654321 · 17/10/2026 18:57

Meat

Idontjetwashthefucker · 17/10/2026 18:58

Another vote for sourdough, it's vile...and avocado

Singleorigincoffee · 17/10/2026 18:58

Anything Gails.

LivingForTheWinter · 17/10/2026 18:58

Fucking protein, it's bloody everywhere and I'm not at all convinced we all need so much

whippersnapper55 · 17/10/2026 19:07

Hot honey on everything!

Pasta is only emergency food.
You were caught in a traffic jam because of a traffic accident and you have to feed young children - pasta.
You are sick and can't move around but have to cook for kids - pasta.
Pulling out your fine flour 00 and pasta maker, will result still in - pasta. Bronze die cut pasta is still just pasta.
You go eat your decent gourmet pasta, let us be free not to be fond of it.

Betterversionofme · 17/10/2026 19:08

All tropical or 'exotic' fruit.

RampantIvy · 17/10/2026 19:08

Parsnips
Oysters
Mussels
Winkles
Whelks
Beetroot

All should go into room 101

Mashed potato. Everybody seems to have it down as the ultimate comfort food but although I will eat it if offered to me, I really don't care for it. Even the best, most buttery mash.

It's a lot better if it's got cheese in it or browned on top of a cottage pie or even both but really, no thankyou.

I quite like jackets though. Well. I like the skins and butter. The promise of the skin and the distraction of a really generous filling helps me through the mash.

The worst ever mashed potato is the type made with loads of (skimmed) milk and served with an ice cream scoop.

I completely agree with this, especially the ice cream scoop, it makes me queasy.
The canteen at work sometimes has mash in a big tray, complete with little brown bits which I presume are the eyes in the potatoes that the cook couldn't be bothered to remove. Gross!

The M&S ‘wild’ smoked salmon we just opened, stinking of creosote. Taking it back tomorrow.

Seven pounds bloody fifty. The dirty evil bastards etc.
