To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

I do think those hating pasta and risotto (and panettone, actually) are probably psychopaths, though - Italian food is the greatest on earth.

LadyHexham · 17/10/2026 17:55

Cupcakes.
A very expensive plain bun with a kilo of sugar on top.

Lobster, give me a nice fresh crab.

This is me too!!!

SerendipityCat · 17/10/2026 17:58

I was accused of being culturally insensitive on a previous thread for suggesting it, but yes - matcha is foul! Avocado is the epitome of blandness unless you tart it up with lots of extra flavourings, and even then it only tastes of disappointment and wasted money.

Since Christmas is approaching I'll also add Panettone, which tastes like loosely compressed fruity sawdust, and Stollen, which is similar to Panettone with the added awfulness of marzipan. Oh, and marzipan is worth a mention on its own. I like almonds - I even like ground almonds - so how does marzipan end up tasting so bloody foul?!

sherbetlemonade · 17/10/2026 18:03

The avocado.

redboxer321 · 17/10/2026 18:11

Anyone else not agreed with any the foods listed being overrated?
I don't eat half of them for various reasons but I like them. Good job really else I'd be a total porker.

No actually I don’t. (Love rice and potatoes even on their own) I’ve never found a pasta dish I actually thought tasted nice

Go to Italy for few days, pasta is unreal! I literally could eat pasta every day.

Lasagne. I’ve had it maybe three times in my life. I don’t dislike it, I just don’t get the hype.

Svanam · 17/10/2026 18:18

I like matcha though 🫣

Sour dough. It’s everywhere. Who want to eat sour bread.
Matcha
Bubble tea
Iced Coffee

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 17/10/2026 18:22

I like matcha, but without any of the syrup stuff. Just nice plain matcha.

I don't like the pistachio things everywhere. Unless it's an actual nut, pistachio is very dusty and dull as a flavour.

Lomonald · 17/10/2026 18:23

Sourdough/avocado /Biscoff./pistachio flavoured things can all can get in the bin

NeedToKnow101 · 17/10/2026 18:28

Avocado, every day of the week.

FlowerPotFace · 17/10/2026 18:31

PuppyMonkey · 17/10/2026 16:55

Gravy.

Behave! Gravy? That makes the roast! A roast isn’t a roast unless there is lots of nice gravy to cover it. 😂

susiedaisy1912 · 17/10/2026 18:32

Sushi
matcha
seaweed
salted caramel
prosecco
champagne
herbal teas
hot chocolate drink
mint flavoured anything

FlowerPotFace · 17/10/2026 18:33

Cheese cake. It’s everywhere, different varieties and flavours all of which are equally awful and I can’t stand the digestive base either.

bababamama · 17/10/2026 18:34

@Svanam

if you haven’t had decent pasta then it’s either how you cook it or where you go / your recipes because whilst much pasta is so so, it can be absolutely delicious, same as every other meal.

I don’t actually think any specific food is overrated, just poorly cooked so often. What I do not buy are ready meals, they are pretty terrible, and unless I’m away and it’s all there is, I avoid generic type pub meals as they are likely to be ready meals, if I have to eat in one I stick to burgers or steak which whilst mediocre are likely to be ok to fill me up.

I scratch cook at home and a lot of dishes people describe as so so are very tasty when properly prepared

AllJoyAndNoFun · 17/10/2026 18:35

Another vote for carrot cake

carrots- yum
cake- yum

carrot cake- not yum- I think I’m just suspicious of any attempts to make cake healthier.

also CBA with mashed potato unless it’s on cottage pie with cheese on top.

leperol · 17/10/2026 18:36

Smoked fish, ugh
Mussels, those little bogeys in a shell you have to extract with the shell of another awful mussel, ugh
Steak, Either too bloody or like leather, and anyone I've every heard of choking to death, did it on a piece of steak.

bababamama · 17/10/2026 18:37

I think I must just have different taste buds to all of you! Matcha craze though I do accept (I did enjoy the real thing in a tea ceremony, but not in sickly drinks)

mint makes me feel ill, that is my one hate

MarcusBrigstockesfringe · 17/10/2026 18:37

Really surprised at how many people dislike sushi. A plate of sashimi and soy sauce is heaven. Last time I had surgery that's what DH brought to hospital for me to eat.

And also avocado? You can nail your daily fibre requirements with a slice of rye bread and thick mashed avocado. Delicious!

Pernicketywishes · 17/10/2026 18:39

Blondies - they just taste like undercooked sponge that’s got too much vanilla in.

Gengha · 17/10/2026 18:41

Most desserts in these dessert cafe places. Waffles, cookie dough etc with sploges of cream, ice cream and sauce. Just all
different textures and colours of sugar that all tastes the same. Ditto macarons. Look nice but just sugar in differing textures.
