To ask what food you think is overrated

Pasta! Everyone seems to love it but I think it’s seriously overrated and pretty plain/ boring. Would never order it in a restaurant. What food does everyone love but you think is overrated?

OP posts:

i like vegetarian sushi but not the fish

lovethesunnydays · 19/10/2026 07:42

Sourdough bread, especially toasted. It’s like eating concrete.

Yep, dog gobbled up Greggs sausage and explosive diarrhea everywhere 💩 when we got home!

Lawdy that sounds diabolical! They really are shite though so it doesn't surprise me! X

mamamamamamamamamamachameleon · 19/10/2026 09:23

Quinoa

Fiftyandme · 19/10/2026 09:25

Caviar
Matcha
Gnocchi
Exotic mushrooms

EerieDecorations · 19/10/2026 09:28

Vienetta, see posts time and time again where people say what a treat it was when growing up, ooh I'm going to go and buy one now. Tasteless ice cream, tasteless chocolate, literally empty calories, it looks pretty but is disappointment through and through.

In the days when I ate potato, our local hospital canteen did the best hash browns. People travelled for miles to have their breakfast.

I think the tradition has gone now sadly.

Oh I love a hash brown. I'm wondering now what my hospital's ones are like! Or like that proper potato hash they make in American diners? I don't see it much here. I used to live off that in a bagel and 1 dollar pizza slices when I was in NY!

Why no more potato for you?

Daftypants · 19/10/2026 09:48

Sourdough bread , especially if it’s toasted ! Hurts your mouth and teeth 🦷
Biscoff everything can get in the bin .
Salted caramel I’m so over it , I don’t dislike matcha but matcha everything just no , I don’t want a Lindt matcha flavour but I do quite like an ice matcha with a fruit added .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/10/2026 10:08

Oysters! At least when raw.

Having had them more than once, I can well understand why in Charles Dickens’ time they were considered poor people’s food. IIRC a character in the Pickwick Papers says something like, ‘It’s a werry remarkable circumstance, how oysters and poverty go together.’

Some of these suggestions are indicative of where manufacturers or chefs overdo a trend I suspect and people get heartily sick of the sight of even the word.
Some might be due to bad experiences. You can have bad pizza, but memorable ones too. Ditto pasta. Cooked very well both can be divine.

TaterTots68 · 19/10/2026 10:56

Pizza
Ice cream
Most cake
Dark chocolate
Nandos

I completely agree! Vanilla and tonka bean in everything is one example.

Pasta encompasses everything from spaghetti hoops in tomato sauce in a tin (bleugh) to the most divine hand-made, fresh, paper thin, filled ravioli, in a beautifully composed, freshly made sauce.

Ditto potatoes. You can have horrible frozen tasteless rostis or croquettes, or the most divine potatoes boulangère prepared with love and cooked for hours, or a delicious Irish champ or glorious roast potatoes cooked in goose fat by someone who really knows what they are doing.

Aside from differences in the quality of a product, the same basic ingredient, cooked in different ways, with great skill or love, or complete indifference, can result in two completely different dishes.

Anything described as “diet”.

I was accused of being culturally insensitive on a previous thread for suggesting it, but yes - matcha is foul! Avocado is the epitome of blandness unless you tart it up with lots of extra flavourings, and even then it only tastes of disappointment and wasted money.

Since Christmas is approaching I'll also add Panettone, which tastes like loosely compressed fruity sawdust, and Stollen, which is similar to Panettone with the added awfulness of marzipan. Oh, and marzipan is worth a mention on its own. I like almonds - I even like ground almonds - so how does marzipan end up tasting so bloody foul?!

I absolutely agree with you about marzipan. I use almonds and ground almonds a lot in cooking though - it's a mystery! I'm wondering if I could be bothered to make my own, it might be a different story. I suspect commercial stuff probably uses a synthetic almond flavouring.
In fact, I've never come across anyone who has actually said "Ooh, I love marzipan". It's telling that my mother, who was a young child during WW2 and never let us leave anything on our plates, would allow us to carefully slice the marzipan off our pieces of Christmas cake, peel the icing off to eat, and leave the marzipan on the side. Now I'm old, I've realised that she probably hated it too but couldn't actually bring herself to leave it.

Lookingbackconfused · 19/10/2026 14:08

Brioche as a savory food - why would I want sweet bread for a burger or sandwich. The only thing brioche is good for is bread & butter pudding.

Agree with Sushi too.

Oh and why put SALT in caramel!!!
Baffles me. 😂. It's like someone added salt instead of sugar by mistake but styled it out, like it was always the plan & people just went with it.

durdledoris · 19/10/2026 15:53

Never tried it but the sound of hot honey turns my stomach

I do love marzipan. I hate Christmas cake and just eat eveyone else's marzipan and icing 😃

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2026 17:25

I like marzipan and the icing more than the cake part.
( Although I don’t eat that many cakes tbf.)

FlawlessShiv · 20/10/2026 09:36

Pasta yes! No matter how good it’s seasoned it just doesn’t do it for me.
Avocado
Shrimps
Sushi

StarlightLady · 20/10/2026 10:04

Sourdough!

Can't digest it, makes me vomit, since my kidneys got sick.

Verv · 20/10/2026 14:55

Alcohol, boiled potatoes, stews (slop) and matcha.

Aw I'm sorry to hear that. I didn't know kidney illness could mean no potatoes! Hope you're alright overall though? X
