With respect that she didn't show me, I suspect that as my brother and I was brought up in Woodhouse and Headingley, my brother also though he wouldn't remember Woodhouse as he was a toddler, and I returned to Leeds after university when I lived in again in Headingley, Woodhouse and Hyde Park, I do know what I'm talking about. My brother's wife is from Harehills too. As a child we had family friends in various places in Leeds, some nicer than others.
Despite their drawbacks, areas with houses that can be converted into flats or let out by the room tend to attract a premium, which means that many supposedly cheap, poor, working class and errrr diverse areas become too expensive to buy in for people who came to Leeds, Manchester, London, Oxford or wherever as a student and never left. Also, can't get proper insurance against burglary etc. Endsleigh insurance redringed Leeds 1-12 when I lived there I think (so nicer Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Oakwood, too, and sometimes cheaper bits of south and west Leeds at the same time. I suspect that outpricing has spread to West Park, where my A level history teacher later married and settled with his family, Moortown, Gledhow.
Before I left Leeds people were looking to Ilkley, Otley with good state schools, Harrogate, and nearby villages like the absurdly named Ben Rhydding (it was built and given a fashionably Celtic name in the late 19th century) which have really good train links rather than struggle with congestion in a car/bus, or try and get across City Square and through the barriers, and then across the bridge to platform 8 (London sometimes) or 16 (fast trains to Manchester Piccadilly and destinations en route. My mum had recently met a new partner who wouldn't consider living in a city, whereas she was quite homesick and talked of moving back to Leeds or even down to north London if she was widowed. She missed the people, the convenience, the ease of getting to work or seeing her many friends, going to the theatre or concerts....
