Head of MI5 comments:
Sir Ken McCallum, the director-general of the Security Service, warned that revisiting the debate on the extent of Moscow’s influence over the 2016 vote risked empowering Russia.
His comments appeared to be a reference to the row that has engulfed Andy Burnham since he told the Rest is Politics podcast it was important to get “on the record” that Russia had interfered in the referendum.
The Prime Minister has since been forced to clarify his comments and insist that he respects the result of the referendum.
Sir Ken, speaking at the agency’s Thames House headquarters on Tuesday, said it was “up to us how far we allow our adversaries to divide us”.
He said: “I’m a little bit worried that [if] we all stay in this debate for another few days, the Russian trolls who didn’t appear to do all that much at various points over the years, they’ll be delighted they are front page news once again despite the comparative unimpressedness of what they do at all points along the journey.”
